Back when I was a kid, I used to hate Derlei, he seemed to score every time he played against Sporting, and then, we sign him, and he became Liédson's best ever partner. What a player, one of the best in the Portuguese league in the 00's, and awfully underrated.

I loved watching play for Leiria and Porto, but we porto fans always knew 95% of those players were playing levels above their actual ability merely because mourinho made them believe they were the best in the world. But Derlei had a solid career

Was never a big fan of Mourinho but I wish we get to see him manage Porto again before he retires. He was absolutely immense with those players there. McCarthy, Derlei, Deco, Maniche, Costinha, Valente etc they played the best football of their career with him.

I remember him very well. But then, there were a number of other good players in that Porto side that didn't quite hit the limelight afterwards. Even the Monaco side they beat 3:0 had a number of young stars that couldn't live up to their full potentials. Well, such is life.

7:32 Some extra context, that Panathinaikos team had a lot of Greek players that would go on to win the Euro 2004 one year later and the previous year they topped their group in the Champions League against the rich and new stadium Schalke, Mallorca of Etoo and the invincibles Arsenal. Then in the knock out their were the favourites against Barcelona in the quarterfinals. They only lost because a last second shot went wide with the whole Camp Nu at its feet expecting it to be a goal that would give Panathinaikos the away goal victory. Beating them in Greece, somewhere that Barcelona of Rivaldo, Xavi, Overmars e.t.c. and the Arsenal of Henry, Viera e.t.c. both failed to even get a draw, it was a big deal!

@@yskwong Add Carlo Ancelotti in the list. He was very poor until his football career started and he never acted like that didnt happened, hes famously soft towards players in difficult times. Mourinho might not be suited for modern times and players nowdays, but he got even better, what he pulled off with United and Roma is a miracle and years ahead of us will prove it. He won CL with underdogs, won EL with United in 'past-Ferguson' era, with Roma in shambles, hes people`s hero and in reality only few clubs can win CL and top trophies. Pep tried with Bayern and failed miserably and he inherited CL winners team, got lots of money. We`re yet to see if City and their 115 charges will and how it will affect these years. Mourinho have 0 charges against his results and what results they are!

Actually, Derlei went to Dynamo Moscow after FC Porto and had two good seasons there. Afterwards failed in the loan to benfica... but played quite well in sporting the following two seasons...

He had a serious injury, and was never the same. Also the fact he didn't play for Portugal is BS. He was a portuguese citizen by the time of euro04, but he was never before call, so was no reason to do so, now that the squad was complete. He the half season with Fernandez, Porto was a very different team. A lot leave, a lot came in, so the team wasn't at is best. And Porto sell more players, in the mid season. Derlei was one of then.
