Why Did The Bees March Into The Box?

I also go through a nucleus colony of bees that I performed a removal on several weeks ago. You will see a very beautiful Italian queen & I mention my favorite hive tool.
I reside in New Orleans where winters are very mild so honey bees thrive & are abundant here.
I fool with bees in some capacity approximately ten months of the year with the season beginning in late February/early March.
I travel throughout southeast, Louisiana removing bees from unwanted places & giving them good homes where they can fly freely, pollinate the world & make honey.

My daddy used to keep bees. As a very young boy I used to sit with him next to the hives and he would call-out what flower the bee had been to as it returned to the hive. Red pollen was the Sumac, yellow was the dandelion. These were great memories of my late father, amateur naturalist.

My best guess for why they run into the box rather than fly is B/C the act of flight is costly. Especially for a bunch of girls with low energy reserves. As for "Eagle Eye", he didn't tell you the whole story. Instead of keeping a honey jar in the kitchen, he would go out to that same hive every morning to steal honey. Those poor girls were so fed up with his B.S. that instead of absconding, they cemented the lid to the box! There, that aught to fix em'!:)

New sub. Have seen a few of your videos. Am glad your textovers are more legible for this video. I am very interested in your content because it's fascinating and informative. Sometimes have had to stop video several times and whip out the magnifying glass to read text on the screen. If I have to pause multiple times in one video, I usually just move on. Eye strain with little phone screens not fun. Hugely appreciated when clear text provided for those with slightly imperfect old eyes who want the full content. You are very knowledgeable about bees and I sincerely thank you for your willingness to share and dispel the fears people have that bees are waiting to attack en mass with the slightest side glance. Long videos are especially nice for relaxing. I think I could watch bees marching all day if there could be a little zoom in now and then - maybe at the hive box/nuke entrance? Really like your videos! fun and at the same time relaxing and gives me a lot to learn before I start my own little beekeeping in the middle of Sweden on the coast. Have been retired since 2004 due to illness and have a lot of time but very little money so thought to try to build me some ordinary 1/1 Langstroth hives and some horizontal long hides from recycled wood now in winter 2019 so maybe I can catch some bees to swarming on spring? But starting from scratch but thinking about building most self and trying to buy as little equipment as possible.

I am one who is positively horrified of bees ((wasps, hornets, stinging ants, centipedes, and scorpions)), BUT ... I am absolutely addicted watching these bee videos ... I am AMAZED at how you can handle them unprotected and bare-handed ((in many cases)) ... I don't have a clue how you have such a keen eye for the queen from a mass of thousands of moving bees ... I love how you are so gentle with them ... and fearless ... I almost want to be friends with them. Almost. But. Not quite. I would spazz-out, I'd start flailing, I'd be covered in a swarm of them all, stung to death! My biggest question, though, is how on earth do you manage to work with bees when you could encounter "killer bees?" And, if they were killer bees, would you be able to work with them? Would it be the same or different? To me, they're all killer bees, because I'm allergic and afraid, so I'd get hurt. 😉🐝

Whenever I caught a swarm I knew it would be about three weeks that they would be at the lowest population due to the cycle. Those will explode in a few days and really start filling out the box with a flow.

Thanks. A great info vid. I like watching your bee vids, althpugh I wouldnt go into bee keeping, It is like watching another world of interesting feats. You say about putting them into a larger box, how do you do that. I can understand moving the frames to another larger box, but how about the bees that are already out collecting pollen, as they know to come back to the original box.

You can easily do one of two things: either graduate them to an 8 or 10 frame deep hive box as this nuc is a 5 frame deep or simply add another nuc right on top. The latter is what I actually had in mind. I really enjoy keeping bees in nucleus set ups, have been known to stack as many as 6 atop each other.

Ian P Allen either way they really don’t mind. The main thing is to place the frames in the new box like they were situated in the previous box. Once you’re out of their domain they get right back to things without skipping a beat. They really have no idea what “inconvenience” means, not in their vocabulary. ✌️🐝

JP are you sure about the 20% and above for fermentation? I was told fermentation can occur even at 19%. To prevent fermentation I have heard 18.5% and below.

I know that in an environment that contains moisture & the right ingredients , mold will start growing when the levels are 20% or higher. I learned that from environmental engineers after hurricane Katrina. Cured honey is usually under 20% in moisture before bees cap the cells. If honey for some reason (after it is cured) absorbs moisture then of course fermentation can begin. I’m not saying 20% is acceptable by any means, I believe bees know best. In my eyes 18.5% as you’ve mentioned is about the acceptable cut off.

Yappy hasn’t come down this season but I’m planning on including him in a video soon. Schawee & I see each other about 3-4 times a week, I donate a lot of hives to him. He & I will be doing a removal together soon, video coming! Monkey Man moved to Florida, really don’t see him much these days.

Of course I’ve heard of the flow hive, anyone who fools with bees should have by now. Without getting deep into the subject let’s just say it’s an ingenious design no doubt about that but nothing is perfect & nether is that system. It’s attracted a lot of people to beekeeping albeit I don’t believe it’s the best option for new beekeepers. It’s expensive & there’s a huge learning curve, we’ll leave it at that for now. You are free however to send me one if you should desire. 😉🤣✌️🐝

Last time I checked on them, they were pretty aggressive. I'm concerned they may be queenless, but the numbers don't seem to have dwindled

They only recently got aggressive. Nothing seems to work. They seem quite deep in the pipe. Didn't want to kill them.

Aaron Bisson you have a tough, possibly impossible task getting the bees out safely. You always want to smoke behind the colony to run them out so how will achieve this? Can you get to the backside of the pipe, perhaps with some excavation? That’s what I would attempt to do. If you cannot & he’s going to kill them if you don’t do something try running a tube to the rear of the pipe & smoking the tube so the smoke gets behind them. Use smoke first always, then a little repellent if needed. Be careful with repellent in a situation like this, you could wind up killing the bees with the vapors. Good luck! ✌️🐝

Brood capping is different from honey capping because it needs to be permeable to air. Bees don't have lungs, but they still need to "breathe". Honey capping is reasonably water and air tight. I don't really know why that makes the color different, but when you look in real life you mostly notice a texture difference.
