The V10s actually had more tow capacity than the Cummins, their fuel economy was their biggest weakness (duh). Now with diesel being more expensive, diesel engines being costly to maintain, the new diesel trucks getting worse mileage thanks to the new emissions regs since 2007, and new trucks in general being priced to the moon, the old V10 trucks suddenly look less daunting.

@@nathan1sixteen Given how many guys are still fighting over old Cummins trucks rather than going bankrupt over the new ones, I'm sure that 13000lb is plenty for them. Given how much the new diesel trucks cost out the gate, their more expensive & more consistent maintenance intervals, and their lower fuel economy, the older diesels at markup are still cheaper by comparison, and the V10 gassers even cheaper by comparison. This is one of those markets where sellers keep price gouging because people keep clamoring for the newest thing, and the only way to get prices to drop at this rate is for buyers to opt-out or opt for used trucks until the new market bottoms out.

@@knote4958 Well, to begin, the reason a lot of this started was due to the chip shortage where you couldn’t get a new truck because they didn’t have enough chips to make them. So, people were going out and buy older used trucks because that’s all that was available. You go back 3-4 years (well after all the emissions crap was required) and you could get a 12v Cummins or a 7.3 powerstroke with 150k miles for 5 grand. I know because I was looking at them, and if I wasn’t in college at the time, I would’ve bought one. Now, with that being said, 90% of truck owners don’t need a truck, let alone more than 13,000lb towing capacity. Studies and surveys consistently show that a vast majority of people who own trucks never do “truck stuff” with them, like using the bed or towing. But, that’s not what the wizard was arguing. He stated that “guys who are actually towing are buying the v10s because their more reliable”. No, guys who are actually aren’t buying 25-30 year old trucks, because there’s a lot more to a truck than the power train. Having comfortable seats and the other amenities that new truck offer helps make those long hauls a bit more comfortable. Not constantly pushing your trucks towing capacity is also nice. I mean, just because your trucks rated to tow 13k doesn’t mean you should be towing that every day. But, if you’re trucks rated for 30k, it will tow 13k all day every day no problem

Now im a die hard ford guy and I hate cummins, but the reason for that is because of the extra weight of the diesel engine itself, and dodge had to follow a gvwr, sure the v10 could tow more on paper with the numbers, but the cummins did it way better with ease im sure, the diesel probably weighted 900 pounds and the gas was probably 500 or so. that extra 400 lbs of capacity is taken away from the diesel, while the gas gained 400 lbs of capacity etc.

My Dad told me years ago, "You can buy a newer expensive car and get great gas mileage, or you can buy an old car for less and spend the money you save on fuel." Exactly. I have 2 cars, one is a brand new Hyundai I bought for my gf for good fuel mileage and safety, finance is 100 bucks a week... The other is my 1992 Merc W140 that absolutely chews fuel but I paid cash for it and it's absolutely beautiful. We drive around the same amount per week, which is a LOT, but factoring fuel in the Merc and payments + fuel for the Hyundai, the W140 is cheaper to run. Of course I could have bought an economical car for cash but that's not why we're on this channel!

It was also tough because back then there wasn't much difference in gas and diesel at the pump, usually diesel was less and diesel maintenence wasn't that expensive back then either. Nowadays with better transmissions like the Ford 10 speed and the insane maintenance costs of new diesels I think gas engines are looking at a 3rd life in the HD truck world. That relatively short golden age of the light duty diesel in pickups is long gone, but man was it fun while it lasted!

I recently purchased a 1998 Ram 2500 V10 4x4 Quadcab with an 8ft bed. 118k miles and I love it (it's not my daily). I upgraded the steering box and added a steering stabilizer. Mint interior and no cracked dash (seem more common in the US than Canada). I paid $6500 CAD and I am 3rd owner. Minimal surface rust on the arches but cab corners all good.

the cracked dashes are definitely more common in the US. i have an online friend in canada that has a 96/97 1500 5.2 v8 thats twice totaled and the dash is perfect. he works in a junkyard and basically all the dashes he sees there are near perfect. My 01 1500 5.2 v8 has a cracked dash (but not destroyed) and my roommates 01 2500 5.9 v8 is missing multiple pieces of the dash. An old coworker of mine also had an 01 1500 5.9 v8 and its dash was in about the same shape as mine.

Car Wizard, you are one of the few mechanics out there that has experience with the aluminum block Viper V-10 and the iron block Ram V-10. I'd love to see a video where you compare and contrast these engines. I think that would be pretty interesting. There's a lot of misconceptions about them. For example, the Viper is often said to have a truck engine, even though its version went into production before the Ram's. The Viper V-10 is often called a Lamborghini engine, which way overstates their development work on some prototype V-10s they built for Chrysler. Next time you are working on a Viper, I would love to see it parked next to the Ram and hear your thoughts and opinions on these engines. I think that would make am interesting video. Cheers!

Completely agree, when you factor in the diesel is more than $1.00 gallon more expensive the slightly better fuel efficiency is no longer an factor. I prefer the 8.1 Vorteck big block but the Dodge V10 is also a solid choice.

most diesels get twice the mpg compared to the 8.1 and the v10 empty, towing is still about 5mpg better with a diesel , therefore a $1 is worth paying for another 8-10 mpg. I have both the 8.1 and a duramax lb7, so i speak from experience

@@Tommy-bl2vm i can vouch for Diesels i got a 2005 F250 Harley Davidson edition with ALOT of aftermarket mods. 6.0L Powerstroke. gets about 29 mpg highway and 20 towing highway a 2022 bronco on a car trailer. and my 2019 F250 platinum all bone stock all the emissions crap on it still. which recently broke at 70k miles emissions crap not the motor. i am getting 13.7-15 MPG towing or not towing highway. pretty much identical no matter what im doing with it... i think im gonna delete it before warranty's even up just because i calculated it out with the 30k more miles i need to drive it with the minimum 5.5 dollars a gallon for diesel in my area i will be spending atleast $12039 in fuel. vs if i delete it now. $1034 on fuel for the same distance. this calculations for unloaded highway.... itll probably be a bit higher but 12k VS 1k in fuel costs. not to mention down time because emissions crap broke. or breaks

I did like how well it towed and thankfully I never had emission system issues but I can definitely understand why some of the guys want to go to older diesels. A few years ago, I worked in the parts department of a local Toyota/Lexus dealership. On my last day there (I had accepted a position at another place), one of the mechanics (who was hearing impaired) was raising a 3 month old Tacoma truck on one of the hydraulic lifts, and was looking at his cell phone while it was going up. He had placed one of the lift points incorrectly, and the truck fell off of the lift! Thankfully, no one was injured, but the customer wound up with a brand new truck, and the mechanic wound up looking for another job!

Believe it or not earlier this year at a dealership in Georgia where my brother-in-law works, an older valet with foot neuropathy slammed the gas pedal down on a car in the shop instead of the brake and pinned a service tech to his death against a wall. See i think diesels are too easy for people to start out learning stick in since it's hard to stall them. Since they spoil you with their torque and it makes it a sudden shock when you get in a gas vehicle with a stick and find out very quickly what works in a diesel doesn't work in a gas. I learned to drive stick in a dodge neon dad had on the lot killed it many times but figured it out in a few mins ever sense if its got wheels i can drive it.

I love my 95 v10 !!! Costs me a fortune in gas but it’s incredibly reliable. Starts everyday, never let me stranded and I’ve towed hundreds if not thousands of pounds of weight at a single time and it doesn’t skip a beat .

I am totally with you about this truck being a value. I recently bought a 115k mile 2003 Yukon XL for 8000 dollars, and the same argument can be made about it. The new models cost 70-80k or more, the engine has major longevity issues, and the difference in fuel economy is negligible. When the purchase price is 10% of what a new one costs, the difference in fuel mileage is moot.

If many know a mid 1990's ram 3500 dually with the V10 is a steal when if one has tips to wear clothing they don't mind getting dirty when looking at a mid Y2K GMC Yukon XL as seeing a for sale sign in the window has one look over the vehicle to know its worth the effort to call the owner for a test drive when potential buyers urge the seller to take the vehicle to a mechanic the buyer trusts for a pre-purchase inspection. Depending on trim level has many knowing new models can top $100,000 as with options as if many knowingly want the 6.2 as if they are driving the new SUV off a dealership lot for $120,000.

At work we sold a F-450 with a 19’ bucket. The company was too cheap to overhaul the hydraulic system for the bucket, so every time we tried to use it, it started puking hydraulic fluid somewhere. We bought it new in 2001, it had a grand total of 14,000 miles on it. It sold for a whopping big price of…… $7200! Pull the lift and put a standard 8’ bed on it, and you would have virtually a 20 year old new truck!! It was an international diesel, manual shift 4wd. What a great work truck, for dirt cheap! Once we pretty much quit using it, all that happened with it was start it weekly and take a 20 mile ride monthly. The 4wd was useless, but it had a winch on front and rear, cold AC, 3kw inverter. A great work truck, 10 MPG anytime. There are good deals on the older diesel trucks, but you have to really search.

@@Zephyrmec Wouldn't it be cheaper to overhaul or replace the bucket lift than to buy a new truck with a new bucket lift? I have never overhauled a bucket lift but I can't imagine it being more costly than a new truck with a new lift on it. People used to ask why I had engines and transmissions rebuilt in my vehicles (when they only lasted 150K-200K miles before needing a rebuild) for $1500-$3000, I would then ask how much their new car cost them. They would answer (at the time) $20K-$30K. If I can get another five years out of a car or truck, it is worth the $3000. For the record my sister had her automatic transmission rebuilt in her mid 2000's Chevy Suburban, she removed and re-installed it herself (if you met her you would figure it out) but it cost her $500 plus the gas to get to the rebuilding guy (about 200 miles round trip -- we both live in a rural area), I priced a Jasper transmission for it and it was about $4000 plus they would only ship to a certified mechanic (yeah, I would probably have been stupid enough to write that check without much hesitation if it had been my truck since a new one would be about $60K, if I got two years out of it before everything else went to hell it would have been worth it to me and her mid 2000's Chevy 3/4 ton pickup has 350K miles on it and still runs fine whereas the Suburban only has about 250K on it). A year later her transmission seems to be fine and she tows a heavy trailer regularly.

If many known when Chrysler was still an independent automaker when after the restyling in 1994 has many knowing a magnum V10 was an option in 2500 and larger rams in relation to ford and its triton family of engines which included a triton V10. If those trying to sell a second and or third gen ram when if potential buyers question wanting the transition era of the Cummins as if they wanted the late 12 valve or the early 24 valve as if potential buyers are told the ram they are interested in buying has the LA series of engines including the V10 when if the seller hears a click then a dial tone as the potential buyer is after a Cummins.

David, I heard from someone who knew an engineer at Chrysler who told him about the transmissions in those years of trucks. He said the engineer told him at the time his boss didn't want to hear about certain plastic parts in those transmissions would fail. Using stronger parts would've been the better way to go. His boss didn't want to hear it as saving those costs with plastic parts were his ticket to a bonus and possible promotion. Eventually Chrysler had massive failures in those transmissions leading to recalls and rebuilds.

I think the V10 Ram was one of the most enjoyable trucks I owned, especially the 5 speed 2500, I wish I had kept it to be honest, I did replace it with a 3500 V10 fully loaded leather, woodgrain etc. It ended up being too much truck though, I don’t haul anything heavy and I just liked the acceleration of the V10, I ended up selling it for a Tundra as I needed a better ride with decent acceleration that was more self sufficient. V10’s are hard to sell, most people don’t realize they aren’t too far away in fuel economy from a 5.2 and 5.9 v8 and they accelerate 20x better, most people are looking for ways to get more power out of the 5.2 and 5.9 V8, the V10 would be a better solution. Young people see the Cummins as a race engine, then there’s people who are into industrial and agriculture that love it, those things coupled with new diesel emissions drive the prices insane. A lot of people today forgot back in the 90’s the V10 was top dog, drive a stock Cummins of the same vintage you’ll see they don’t move too swiftly but they pull anything at will, where as the V10 moved with ease and pulled the same. He did a nice cherry pick of those Trucks he compared the prices to at start. I find a lot of things The so called "Car Wizard" does is what He complains other shops or Mechanics do. For example when He Put a new cv boot on the front drive shaft on one of Tyler's Mercedes suv's. He charged him to remove the front cv shaft, then clean and regrease the joint and replace the rubber cv boot. after a very short time the joint failed. He then charged Tyler for a 2nd hand cv shaft and labour to fit it. If that would of been myself i would of thrown that bill back at Him. He told him that it was worn out and it needed to be replaced. Why didn't He tell him that when he had it apart to regrease it and replace the rubber cv boot. If it was that badly worn, He should of never regreased it and put a new boot on it in the first place. If one of my guys had done that, they would be looking for a new job. The so called "Car wizard" should have replaced that cv shaft for no cost. I know you can't really technically put a warranty on used parts, But He just had thing torn apart. so he would of seen it needed replacing. He is very good at calling a lot of other Mechanics out, but He does a lot of things that ar just as bad. I think he is forgetting a lot of things now He is a Big You tube star.

I've had four of them v10s and never once had a complaint about them. I had one two wheel drive that got good mileage about 12 in town and somehow 17 on the freeway. But I didn't drive it hard and it was two wheel drive. Made one trip from boise to Gooding idaho, must've had a good tail wind but managed to only use 5 gallons of fuel going down for 112 miles pump to pump. I thought the gage was broken

Car wizard i was able to buy a 1995, Ram 2500 4x4 with the manual transmission and the legendary 12 valve engine. The trucks brilliant blue metallic i was able to get it right before the pandemic with 45,800 original miles it currently has 47,013. I paid what i thought was a large amount of money for the pickup but with current prices of pre emission diesels it has doubled in value from what i paid for it.

The early 5.9 Cummings 6-12-6 mechanical fuel injected diesels are worth their weight. My brother has a pair from new 1992 Dodge Ram W250 that work their butts off. But you are correct, these early Iron block V10's were powerful and nearly indestructible. The underside looks great. Back when a Dodge was a Dodge. They were work trucks first and foremost as is evident by an all-Analog gage set, love that.

I went through the same math as the wizard in Jan/Feb before I bought a 1991 C3500 with a freshly (overbuilt) transmission behind a 454 with similar mileage as this V10 beast. Obviously it needed things here and there, but the guy who ordered it with LITERALLY every option available to him at the time of purchase took great care of it. I felt silly spending 5k on a truck that gets used sparingly throughout the year after gas prices went crazy but...it doesn't really matter when I need to haul big loads. Cause those loads need to go from there to here, and the minimal use I put it through means it will last forever. Also, I'm a sucker for bordello red mousefurr interior.

As long as your business doesn't rely in towing this is a great dependable truck. If your business core is towing related then you probably want something that is as cheap as possible to run, but in this case if you only plan to tow not so often and need something reliable you can bite the bullet with the gas mileage. And I completly agree with the other comments. 94-02 rams are the best looking trucks. Since I saw them in 94 for the first time I'm hoping to get one some day.

Just picked up a 2001 Dodge 1500, 4x4 ,5.9, extra cab, 165k miles, it was headed for donation but I intercepted... trans & rear axle rebuilt already. only needs suspension & steering and seat bottom. a few little things like battery, cracked lights. Planning to use for lighter load towing - will add a cooler. The motor purrs. Hope a few thou invested will make for durable and lasting extra vehicle.

I love my 2001 Ram2500 V10 Quad Cab Sport 4x4. I've owned 2 Rams. The first one being a 1998 Ram1500 5.9 Laramie SLT Longbed. There's no comparison on why you should get the 8.0l V10. In the 2 years I've owned mine, I've put 30,000mi on it. Very little upkeep needed. It was a bonus to not only being the second owner of my Ram LA488, but also getting the original window sticker!

6.2L is a great engine. I just got an 11 F150 Platinum w/6.2. Runs like new. 186K. I got 18.5 mpg on a long highway trip. Nothing really to write home about but the engine is extremely reliable! I towed 8K lbs with it already. No problem.

I just can't give up diesel, the extra cost is something I am willing to put up with, love my 2011 6.7 powerstroke, tows my 16,000lb 5th wheel loaded up with side x side with ease. I still have my 2002 7.3 powerstroke as well. I removed all the emissions on my 2011 it's a very reliable truck.

David Freiburger approves of this message. Seriously though, I needed to get a second car to ferry my son around in. It made more sense to buy a Falcon (of Australia), a car with a 4.0L inline 6 than to buy Corolla of similar condition for twice as much. For a car that was going to sit on the street most of the time, the fuel economy argument didn't matter. I did find that the Falcon used about the same or less fuel than my EJ25 powered Liberty (Legacy) wagon. Around 10L/100km which is 23.5 miles per US gallon.

I max pulled a trailer (~5,000lbs) across 3 states and back with my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 inline 6 and managed to get 15mpg through Michigan and Ohio but once I got to Pennsylvania, my modified 5 speed automatic transmission never got out of 4th gear thanks to the hills, but it pulled great. These 2000s vehicles are reliable for critical towing without all that emissions crap that can go wrong or holding you back. Oh and I paid $600 for that Jeep and put in at most $1,000. Mostly sensors, tires and brakes. 250k miles.

That's an updated version of the old AMC inline-6. An extremely robust and reliable unit Chrysler has never been able to replicate. In fact, the only weak point on 90s Cherokees is the garbage Chrysler automatic transmissions. With the 5-speed manual, they were truly bulletproof vehicles. That's good to hear you got a modified transmission, though. I really hope it gives you many years of service. Swapping them out sucks.

@@ironpanther2420 Yeah one day I was having issues with it not going into overdrive because of a TPS issue. And I was counting gears after I fixed it and I'm like "1... 2... 3... 4... 5...? Nah that ain't right." And I kept counting and yeah my gearbox was a 5 speed. When I bought it I had to change the upstream O² sensor and it was jammed into the transmission housing so after figuring that out, I have to have a non-stock transmission. And it's geared low. My dad has a 1997 Grand Cherokee and his has the stock 4 speed and I'm in 3rd by the time he gets into 2nd. But his RPMs are lower on the highway. But after towing, mine stays in that 3,000RPM sweet zone way more often so it feels like it's built to pull.

I totally agree about the newer diesels. We had a 2017 F250 with a 6.7L diesel in it. I loved the power that it put out but I couldn't afford to keep it on the road. The (all) emissions-related repairs killed us. We bought the truck to pull a 25' travel trailer across the country and back and kept it for only a short while after returning. 'Exhaust filter plugged' and finally a pair of O2 sensors a week apart cost us $2,000.00. Ford's answer was that I didn't drive it hard enough - "Drive it like you stole it!!" - they told me. And the problem isn't really 'manufacturer' based - it's the damned government calling for impossible to meet emission standards for a problem that, by-in-large, no longer even exists with newer Diesel engines. ("I'm here from the government and I'm here to help you". No, you're not. Go away!)

Did the same calculation a few years ago. My father had a 96 d3500 cummins standard cab with the trans out if it (4th time) when my truck got totaled out for me while it was parked. Originally was going to buy the old Dodge off of pops, but had gotten used to an extended cab truck. So I hunted for a good heavy truck like this one. Bought a really nice 01 x-cab Ford Super Duty v10 2wd with ~155k on it for $6500. We going to put the 12v in the Ford, but then diesel went through the roof - Obama administration timeframe. If drive the truck around a bit and really liked how it towed and etc, was getting 13-15mpg, 19v heavy loaded. Did the math, couldn't make Finnair sense out of it. My nephew bought the 96 and fixed it back up, I'm still driving the old has hog. Fuel pump, some brakes, set of coils and plugs at 215k, and many, many heavy trailer loads later- still my favorite and still going strong. Love the old gas hogs, and good luck with the old work truck!

My wife and her father run a landscaping company, and one of the trucks they have is a 2019 Ford F350 4WD with a large dump-bed, a dually rear axle, and they tow a double-axle equipment trailer that's got to weigh 7,000+ pounds loaded, easily. It's got the 6.2L V8, and they're lucky to get 6 or 7 MPG when it's fully loaded. But man, it hauls all that stuff with zero issues. Sometimes you just *have* to go big or go home, when you need to get a heavy-duty job done. And modern Diesels suck so bad, as you mentioned. The extra money you pay for the lower MPG with gasoline is MORE than worth it when you factor in the extra cost of purchasing a Diesel truck and maintaining it.

My uncle had the exact same one as the Wizard, dually and all; but emerald green and with the Cummins. The reason why people pay and cling so much to those Diesels is they use just 10l per 100km [around 25mpg]. The V10 makes sense for just towing tractors around on your land, but most people with those massive trucks need to travel like road trains.

As my quarry manager taught me as an apprentice, to be useful a machine needs to be: "in the correct location, the correct configuration and the correct application." A petrol V10 pickup truck is badass, but overkill for ferrying the boss around sites and towing toys on the weekends. It wasn't even as comfortable as my 70 Series GXL LandCruiser and that was an uncomfortable ute at the best of times. The Cruiser wasn't actually that much more economical to be honest, but it worked properly off road and was a much better commercial vehicle. Especially out there.

I haven't owned one but pumping that much power out of a puny V6 with ridiculously powerful turbochargers has to put a LOT of stress on the engine. I haven't heard of too many people having good luck with a I4 or small V6 turbocharged engine, I know I wouldn't want to tow heavy loads with a 3.5 V6! The 5.9 Cummins is reported to be a decent engine even with the turbocharger, however, as are most of Ford's V8 diesels.

I had a '94 2500 2wd and loved it. If I remember right it was 300 hp which was good for back then. I believe I heard the motor was a modular design meaning it could have been built with up to 12 cylinders. I think the bore and stroke was the same as the v6. I was getting 15 mpg on the highway and that is about the same as a 360 was getting. But that was a while ago so I may be mis-rembering a little. 🙂

I got my 98 2500 2wd long bed 24v for $3500 about 3 years ago, at the time everyone thought I was stupid because all they could see was a old truck with rusted fenders, rockers, and various other dents and etc from use (it was a work truck, and was used to haul a 5th wheel camper from up north down here to FL every year, hence the body rust), but the frame, engine, trans, and interior are all well solid. I remember driving a big diesel truck for the first time, my 22' Penske International.. got about 7mpg when I know the v10 gas model at uhaul gets like 3mpg. But holy crap was the diesel slow!! I had it pegged and down a gear every hill and still lost momentum. I feel like the gas would have been more enjoyable to drive across the country.. albeit $1,000 more for fuel.. yikes

@@01Bouwhuis it's still the same in the US, but the emissions equipment on the larger engines has really dropped fuel efficiency... It's getting to the point where burning more gas is cheaper. And if you have emissions system problems you hit the unlucky lottery and need to dump thousands.

I bought a '99 2500 V10 with only 110k miles and loaded to the gills (new AT tires/winch/cattle guards/5th wheel) for only $6000 because it had an "engine noise". The engine noise was just an old belt 🤣. Outside of a tune up, new water pump and a crankshaft position sensor, this truck has worked perfectly! It's used for the deer lease (light off-roading/the occasional hauling) and it suits my needs perfectly!

I've benn driving Volvo tractors (D13 engines) with the particle trap/def systems for about five years now and getting a "filter full", "regen required" and "derate in x number of miles" warnings were too common. It was always a sensor. Always. Fortunatly I got a brand new VNR tractor last year and haven't had any problems like that with it. Yet.

I got a 1995 dodge ram 1500 4x4 with a 5.9 magnum and 82k original miles on it for 1650 bucks six years ago, guess what I drive it weekly usually to the fishing ponds and to haul trailers here and there. My old Dodge truck is awesome I've saved neighbors a few years ago because I was the only person who could get out after 31" of snow. I just moved into a new home and used it to pull a 12' foot trailer. I get crap because it's got horribly faded paint, but hey I paid cash for it six years ago and it still runs like a champ. They are simple to repair. They are almost identical to the 727. Very easy to repair. Change the cheap bands with HD kevlar bands and a shift and your good to go. Also a nice cooler will go along ways. I had a a 1500 with the 46re with 470k on it with the original trans that's was never removed and it still going to this day 6 years later and still never been out.

Diesel fuel is the most expensive...so with a good gas powered engine I really think you made a very good and well thought out decision going with this V10 and NOT a diesel. Besides, like you said the price difference being in the 10s of thousands of dollars..."That's a lot of gasoline".

Mr. Wizard, if I wouldn't be a Christrian, I would covet your purchase of the V10 1 Ton. But I admire you too much, and you are so darn smart, I just ask God to bless you. I've been looking High and Low for a Truck just like that here in the Arctic of Alberta Canada. They didn't make many (for Canada anyway) and Back in '97 , a 1Ton Dually "HERE" 2 whell Drive is absolutly useless and actually Scary to drive. The high floatation of the dual wheels only needs a little moisture on the road and it goes nowhere. So we only buy 4x4s,or quit driving/hauling for the winter. Another great deal for the Wizard.

My mind still thinks that's too expensive. To my mind that truck with that mileage and condition ought to be closer to $3,500 but the truck market has been off its rocker for a couple decades now. If you ever want to fix that dash though LMC makes nice replacements. I did my 2003 Ram 1500 for under $500 shipped to my door.

Gas pig! I have one of those, but mines a 5.9 Cummins and I get 20mpg instead plus all the torques 👍 Incredible money making machines, no def crap, rock solid, better mpg than the new ones. I keep mine stock cus as soon as you start upping the power on any old diesel to keep up with the new ones you get leaks. I’ve had 0 leaks on mine the past year I owned it. Cold AC everything works

@@schooltechnology 94-97 cup holders were pretty much useless. The idea was great. Place the cup holders at eye level to keep from taking your eyes off the road. It practice though, any bump or turn usually resulted in a spilled drink. The 98-01 design was an improvement, but overtime the plastic hinges don't hold up well. As with most things, trial & error. Dodge should've integrated the cup holders with the center console, like the newer trucks.

@@AngryCatMan1982 Believe me, I KNOW. I owned a 94 1500. I got used to making turns with my left hand only. The other was stabilizing my drink. Things got better when the bottom flap broke out of the driver's side cupholder. Smaller cups would fall through but some of the larger cups with small bottoms sat low enough that after a few sips normal turns wouldn't overturn them.

I have pretty much that same truck, but in a different color. My dad bought it used in the fall of 97 to pull his RV and I bought it from him in 05 and I use it to pull my RV. It is not my daily driver and that's another fine reason to have the V10 instead of the diesel. As far as I know, it's more likely a diesel will suffer from sitting for long stretches than a gas engine will. So far, after sitting way more than driving, my V10 has given me zero problems.

With the cost of propane right now I wonder how that would work on the v10. My late grandfathers 68 ford pickup has a propane powered hopped up 428fe was going to go back to gas and sell but might leave the propane in light of prices

If you can fill up a propane pickup locally that isn't a big deal. However, in many places you can't just do that (fortunately my area has two gas stations with a propane pump). Just be damn careful out on the two tracks -- if you rupture a propane line on a hump you will be in for a REALLY bad day -- as in your truck will probably explode, especially if someone in the cab has a cigarette fired up at the time! I have never owned a propane power truck, my nephew had a 1990's Chevy that had been converted to run on either propane or gas but he never put propane in it to even see if that feature worked (it was something he bought for $500 or so to get to and from work). The truck drove fine on gas and he drove it for several years until someone rear ended him at 60m/h and totaled it out (we couldn't even get it on my sister's car hauling trailer to get it to her house to store it until the insurance BS was finished -- he needed it kept for examination because of an injury sustained in the crash).

My favorite Dodge Body style, even looked for one to buy used. One serious problem they have is cracked and busted dash boards because the low grade plastic after so many years has gotten brittle. I could not find one truck with a good dash every single one and I looked at 6 of them had cracked and busted dash boards. Big reason is many of the heater cores are plugged up and when you tear the dash down they break easy. The junkyards are picked clean too and Dodge does not make them anymore so I passed. Everything else on them is solid very well built trucks. Transmissions are like the 4l slippy kind of weak, but if you service them and drive them right they are ok. Nice truck Wizard it will serve you well:P I can confirm the jumping from diesels my company gets 6.4l Hemis now instead of diesels. Too expensive to keep diesels going.

Got a 2500 4x4 one of these back a few years ago for just over $2k. By far the best truck I have ever owned. Even with a loaded 24' equipment trailer It does not care, just a mountain of torque. Started looking for one after seeing Winston over on Worthlesswhips manage to get a hi mileage one of these past CA emissions and then drive it cross country when they moved to the east coast. The block is basically an LA 360 with 2 extra cylinders and the A618 47RH behind is a descendant of the A727 that dates back to the early 60's out to an NP241 and 4:10 DANA 70 rear with an LSD and a DANA 60 on the front. Considering the prehistoric drivetrain its surprising it even pulls the mileage it does. What really makes this engine is the update to Distributor less ignition and direct port fuel injection paired with the mammoth intake runners. Unloaded I really have to watch my speed as I have found myself doing 75mph + with the tack only around 1700 RPM. Worst thing I can say about these aside from the 15mpg unloaded / 12-8 loaded is the dashes are made of the most awful brittle plastic ever (my dash cluster currently has a nice 6" skylight), and the Chrysler ("factory" dealer installed) alarm systems are laughably bad. I assumed the one in mine was some aftermarket toy from the AutoZone accessories isle due to the abundance of poorly placed zip ties and spice connectors until I found the part number on the main module cross referenced to the Factory Chrysler alarm system. Overall considering that the manual explicit says to only run 87 and the currently $2/gal price premium on diesel where I live its ends up about 4% less expensive over a couple hundred mile trip to run the same distance with this as a similar 5.9 would run, however every 5.9 I could find at the time was someone asking $10-20k for a truck with frame rot or some other catastrophic issue.
