When it comes to shipping, I will only ever use Montway. I've used several others, but they picked up one of my vehicles I bought at an auction and they accidentally hit a painted mirror. They paid to replace the mirror, not just some touch up paint, they replaced the mirror. I've never used anyone else ever again. Things happen, but what matters most to me is what the company does when it happens.

Montway is a broker. They have no rolling stock. They sub everything out on load boards like Central Dispatch and pay the lowest rates per mile in the industry. They didn’t buy you a mirror, they withheld payment from the guy that actually hauled your car.

Bought a 1977 cutlass 10 years ago with 4,600 miles in pristine condition. The shipper was professional and the whole neighborhood watched as this brand-new 1977 cutlass rolls out of the trailer. I'd drive it on Saturday to find garage sales and get comments. The shipping cost was a bit high but man that car unwrapped like a dream. Medium green with a white top.

I think reputable shippers will be expensive, but that's ok. It's the cheap fly-by-nighters you have to watch for. Your vehicle may even be "lost" in shipping. It's happened. There's cars that were supposed to to be shipped from California to say, Texas but ended up in South America..

I drive a nine car hauler. I'm listening to these stories thinking "yeeeaaah I've seen that before", but the worst ones are the bits of story where I'm thinking ".... Yeah I've been that guy". All of us are new at one point. Mistakes happen, you gotta learn from them, it's failing to learn that gets folks into real trouble. I like to tell folks "I'm a professional not because I've never made a mistake, but because I've made so many". A lot of these "low quality" shippers hire folks who don't care, are not trained, or just should not be running vehicular freight. Shipping cars is haaaard, and it's not for everyone.

I've occasionally thought about getting into hauling cars for people. I like to drive, I like to tow. I'd only do single vehicles, and I'd do door-to-door. The problem is, every time I've looked into doing it, what I would need to charge to make even a mediocre profit would be far more (2x in some cases) what people want to pay. just to give some numbers as context i'll use some data from experience towing my own stuff, and a couple of friend's vehicles. I'm ~2000 miles from the Wizard. I get about 15mpg towing an open full steel 20' trailer with a 4000# car on it. Take fuel at $5/gal (gotta run premium when towing), pay $20/hr only on driving time (30.75 hours each way), that's $2560. That doesn't include insurance premiums, wear and tear on the rig, food, hotel, etc., all of which cut into that number. Now I know, most of these shippers haul more than 1 vehicle. It doesn't divide the costs as much as people think, until you get to hauling 10+ cars on a single rig and there's a single drop point. That truck especially with the cap on it, that was probably brought in on a triple goose neck.

I am definitely hoping for more videos of these vehicles that are coming into the shop for maintenance and/or repairs. For example, maybe the third-generation, 2019 Toyota Highlander AWD mid-size crossover with the 3.5 L V6 engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission. I can relate to two things in this video. I, too, have an older Cummins Ram: my 1998.5 2500 that I special ordered, and had to wait six months for it. I'm working through a pretty good-sized list to keep it going, hopefully, for at least another 15 years. Vehicle shipping: I will only use Horseless Carriage. Your vehicle is loaded into an enclosed trailer, and is not touched until its driven out at the destination. Yes, they are not cheap. I used them on my 2nd car, after a bad time shipping my truck. I had used A to Z Auto Shipping. They were terrible. They don't tell you that your vehicle may be driven, at times, to various "collection points". They had left the door(s) open at sometime at one of these stops, long enough that a bunch of leaves blew into the cab. They, stupidly, backed it onto an open trailer, so that wind pressure from driving on the highways popped the hinged ARE fiberglass bed cover open (yes, it had been locked). They compounded that stupidity by bungie-cording the cover, gouging the tailgate with one of the hooks. Incredibly incompetent and callous.

After you receive your vehicle from the shipper, check all fluid levels immediately. The shipper that my in-laws used got a "clever" idea to lighten his load a little. To save a few dozen pounds of weight, he had drained most of the fuel, coolant and windshield washer fluid from all vehicles on the trailer. Absolutely ridiculous! We were furious! How can you drain coolant and not tell the customer about it?! Good thing I was there when the car was unloaded, I checked everything right away (obsessive-compulsive disorder) and I gave that shipper a piece of my mind. A few pieces, in fact! No damage to the engine, by the way, but how stupidly unprofessional! His response? "We do this all the time to lighten the load." Wow! OK dude. We will never do any business ever again.

Any Schmuck with a diesel dually pickup can become a shipper these days and that's the problem. I shipped my late mother-in-law's Lexus from NJ to the suburbs of Atlanta GA a few years back when she moved down there. I paid extra using a shipper who wasn't the cheapest. I'm glad I did, they did a good job with no damage to the car and got it there when they said they would. The old saying, "You get what you pay for" proves true time and time again usually.

Might just be misunderstanding this but the customer seems interesting. Ships car to Omega because KZbin (no way there wasn’t one single garage on the way that was worth stopping at). Scrapes bottom of the barrel for shippers, but wants OEM (not OE, not OE grade, OEM) shocks on a 300k mile truck. Then explains how to do an inspection and tune-up like Omega is an 18 year old Jiffy Lube tech. Rather share a beer with him than the shipping employees though 😂

There's a reason legitimate Auto transport companies charge what they do. I've hauled cars for over 20 years. Sometimes things happen. You need a company that has the proper insurance and can take care of a damage immediately. A company that pays its drivers a decent wage and maintains its equipment. If you pay bottom dollar, you'll get bottom tier service.

I used to deal with shipping a while ago. The shipping industry is full of what they call HOT SHOT truckers - which is staffed by people who have a bigger truck F-450 Ford, Ram 3500, etc. they get a at least a 30 to 40 feet (so they can fit at least 2 cars on the trailer). Also- this is considered a non-CDL truck and trailer (has to fall into a category of total weight of leas than 26,000 pounds truck, trailer and cargo) Also- you need to watch if these trucks/drivers have a DOT number. I'm not trying to be offensive here so please don't read anything into this because I am telling you from experience - a lot of drivers I encountered did not understand English very well. If I had a truck that I wanted to keep- I don't blame the owner - I would send it to the Wizard too- I might send ship it to the Wizard and then fly out and pick it up! That way I would try and visit the Wizard, Watch JR Go, the Car Ninja and Hoovie !

I'd be surprised if this truck has the original transmission. My wife has an '07 Dodge RAM 2500 with the Cummins Diesel engine, and that engine will last forever, but her truck with about 250,000 miles is on its 3rd transmission.

Oooooh im working on a 1500 actually at the moment truck need HECKA TORQUE ON BOLTS mostly the rack one because Jesus 235 lb.ft is no joke. Specially when you got not throw with the torque wrench because you can't lift it high enough but oh well. Control arms through me for a loop only 150 lb.ft of torque for the lower arm??? The pt cruiser needs 185 or something of torque just for the back and that one is just up and down you know vertical that confused me a bit. Pt cruiser is like half or less than half of the size of the truck and needs more torque hmm... ┐(´ー`)┌

It's not just Car shipping............. I can order things from Europe (excluding Germany, they move at glacial speeds) or China, and they get here anywhere from next day to 3 days. - admittedly free shipping from China takes weeks. I ordered once from the US, and never again! Stupidly high shipping charges, and it takes weeks to arrive.

I was thinking about shipping my car to you, still am, but the thing that stops me is the shipping part. I almost have half a mind to drive the two days it would take, and fly back home, leaving it with you for as long as you need it, and flying back to drive it home.
@dedalliance1

Would be a lot cheaper to drive and fly anyway, pretty easy to buy a plane ticket for 200 or 300 dollars, if you're lucky even 50 or 100 bucks. The problem is if your vehicles road worthy enough to drive that far then is there really any real reason to have the Wizard work on it lol.
@williamjones4483
@williamjones4483 Жыл бұрын
From an economical point of view, you might be better off. Auto transport companies charge a lot of money, however there are some good transport companies. Airplane tickets may prove to be less expensive than the cost of transport the vehicle.

@@dedalliance1 it has an oil leak on what I suspect is the Front Main Seal. It's a transvers mounted FWD layout, and replacement of the seal is an engine out job. The car is totally road worthy, it's my daily in fact, but at 19 years old, I want someone to do a good once over on the whole thing. It's only got 88K on it, and is in great condition otherwise.
@dedalliance1
@dedalliance1 Жыл бұрын
@@talis84 I suppose that would be a good specific reason then. Everyone's life is different but I'd probably drive it honestly could even make a road trip vacation out of the deal and rent a car to drive back home or drive around for another couple days while the work is being done and then circle back. Honestly by the time you pay a reliable carrier probably 1,500 each way that's going to double your repair bill, may as well skip the hassle and find a good local shop and pay them double to do a good job lol. Just like the owner of this truck, you keep a car for 19 years with only 88k miles on it in good condition no sense in risking that for a shipping company.

We watch content providers, like DDE who ship exotic cars across the US, Canada and the world. There's a real professionalism in that industry. But there is also a seedy side. Royalty in Vegas, recently had a shipper sub contract a transport job. That guy decided to go for a joy ride and wrecked a multiple $100K show car. He wasn't insured! Be afraid 😨 and wary!

I used to have to ship big convex boxes for the government and we were always forced to use the lowest bidder with US citizenship. We were shipping millions of dollars in equipment that is irreplaceable for critical mission support. Always had issues. Not on time, hit a bridge, truck overheated, truck couldn’t get up a hill. Had a 1 ton Dodge show up to haul a 40 ft convex box loaded to 75,000. As the government we had no option but to use lowest bidder. I learned never to take the lowest bid.
