This was really interesting, Bill looks at all these titles with awe and wonder. The Doctor (1) looks at them with fear and 12 was like "they cut out the jokes" because that is all that matters to him at this point. He likes to think of the good times because he has suffered so much

Twelve knows what he is. He can be and often is terrible and powerful. But he's also kind and tries to be fun because what's the point of saving everyone if no one has any fun? Bradley's portrayal of the First Doctor was awful and had barely anything in common with Hartnell's aside from his appearance. He's like a low-energy imitation lacking all the vigour and excitement which make Hartnell's Doctor such a joy to watch. I don't know whether it's the fault of the acting direction or Bradley himself, but it's quite frankly a disgrace. 1:27 Most initially felt that his reaction was just from seeing his future but put the whole thing into perspective. This Doctor has not long left gallifrey for nothing other than to see the universe. While recently dying and choosing not to regenerate, he get's a glimpse of his future of he lives. He doesn't see a playful man, or a curious one. He sees a tyrant, one that is feared across the entire universe, one that can send an entire army running at the mention of his name. He truly does see himself became one of the most despicable beings to ever exist.

So basically, the fearsome Valeyard is just The Doctor after "they cut out the jokes"
@vullord6664 жыл бұрын
comicconcarne I mean, pretty much yeah. There has always been a dark side to the Doctor (even with context). I think the most terrifying moment was when 12 said “The Doctor is no longer here; you are stuck with me”. If you think away the Doctor (the rules and promises he made to himself), then you’re just stuck with the most powerful man in the universe unshackled. The Doctor has always done whatever he pleases but even that can be terrifying to the first. He has singe handedly decided the fates of entire species, civilizations, planets, galaxies, and even the universe (on occasion). Even with context, just from a different perspective the Doctor can be a terrifying and tyrannical existence. What gives him the right to decide everyone else’s fate? To decide who loves and who dies? Nothing. He just does it because he feels like it. I think the first Doctor would be terrified even if they hadn’t cut out the jokes and gave the full picture. He’s just so naive and young (despite being 400 something). He just recently ran away from Gallifrey with his granddaughter to see the universe and all of a sudden he’s told that he becomes this godly force in the future that has probably committed more death than any other single individual in the universe (even with context, that’s a hard pill to swallow).

Love the Valeyard and reference from Old Who. Trenzalore the war, Matt's again. And Skull Moon was a Time War battle in which the doctor had a part. In Hell Bent, a soldier says he was there at skull moon then sides with Capaldi. Destroyer of Skaro is Old Who but partly New Who again with Tennant and Capaldi. I wouldn’t really call it an inconsistency in this case since the tardis has always changed appearance and the doctor calls it a redecoration. Since the tardis is a living sentient being I imagine it gets tired of the same old desktop theme and exterior look from time to time and spices things up. However I don’t know how the exterior look changes if the chameleon circuit is broken. Still it’s a funny scene nonetheless. Man do I love the dichonomy between the 1st and 12th Doctors. It really goes to show just how much things had changed overtime for The Doctor as a person who started off exploring the universe as a curiosity to becoming someone who goes around doing so with the intent to save people along the way where he can. Even if it forces him to do things he doesn't like. And the 1st Doctor's frightened reaction really hits home when you know what's in his future. I really wish we had more of those self reflective moments with 1 and 12 contrasting the differences between where they were in the past, where 12 was now (wondering whether or not to live or die as he is) and where he would be going (Wherever Captain Chibbers and the 13th Doctor are taking the show for Series 11) Ah well, still love the episode despite some of the "All ladies are made of glass" moments from the 1st Doctor.

I agree. I had hoped that, while it wouldn’t be the sole plot, that we would be shown how different 1 and 12 are, from how they act to the type of adventures they are used to. I had also hoped that 1 seeing his future would cause him to become even more determined not to regenerate or at least become more interested in knowing who he ends up becoming. And despite the how they made 1 more sexist than he actually was and the easy to prevent plot, I still enjoyed the episode for it’s emotional story and for the chance to see the original TARDIS again.

One thing I love about 12 is that he has been doing his thing for so long that he lets it go to his head. You see this in “World Enough and Time” where 12 focuses so much on making a dramatic and moving speech, that he wastes too much time and gets Bill shot. Later on he wastes time again showing off explaining a black hole and time dilation that Bill becomes a Cyberman. "10 years you spent up there, chatting. You missed her by 2 hours." As well as how 1 reacts to 12 showing off and being over confident. So it’s no surprise to me that 12 is more theatrical and plays into the legend of The Doctor. Especially with that pose at 0:35

It's not entirely his fault. His main weapon is his mouth, he talks his way out of danger. He talks fast to charm and confuse people, it normally prevents violence. He just got unlucky with Bill.

You see something like that with 10 in "Midnight" Without Donna there to prodive a more "human" touch, the people on the space bus quickly turn on 10, to the extent that they actively tried to murder him. All because they didn't like him acting smart and above everyone else.

I always wondered about this. New who is different from old who. I always thought that the original writers and a creators might be surprised at how violent they are now. Not that I'm complaining. They nailed this scene perfectly

To be fair, in the second episode of the series, the Doctor tried to smash the skull of a sleeping man with a big rock. That would've been pretty violent.

Aloysius Whiteboat The fourth Doctor nearly genocided the Daleks. And the Silurians got blown up at the end of pretty much every episode they were in back then. The violence might look different now, since it's a lot higher budget, but it's pretty much been always there.

I love David Bradley's face at 1:27. This was a great scene bc of how well it showed the dilemma 1 was facing, and that the universe might just be better off if he refused to regenerate. I feel like the rest of the episode should have focussed a little more on that conflict, but it was still a pretty great story.
@dhooth6 жыл бұрын
Please stop making comments about this everywhere, mate. I heard from other people that a lot of lines from the 1st Doctor in this episode don't fit his actual character. Personally I can't form an opinion on that, bc I haven't watched the 1st Doctor's episodes. Still, I don't think any of this should devalue Bradley's performance, let alone the entire episode. There were still plenty of great moments in the episode with the 1st Doctor (example: this one) and you're unwilling to see anything good in this entire story because you feel personally insulted by how the character was presented. If the 1st Doctor was portrayed inaccurately, I think the writing would be more at fault than the actor. I'm not saying this isn't a problem (I am saying I don't know), but it definitely isn't nearly problematic enough to post 7000 KZbin comments complaining about it. So uh, please stop doing that, thanks

puik puikmans you should watch the classics. They’re really good, also, I don’t see why everyone is so offended, it’s just a tv show.. so what if it’s sexist? It’s funny.
@dhooth6 жыл бұрын
Personally I felt like the sexism jokes were repeated a bit too often throughout the episode to still be funny at the end. It wasn't the topic of the jokes that kinda bothered me, just the repetition. It didn't ruin the quality of the entire story ofc. Also, if it's funny but not true to the original character, I can see where some people are coming from. Comedy shouldn't be more important than the characters themselves. It should originate from the characters, rather than appear out of nowhere. Again, Idk if that's the case here, I should prob try to watch the classics sometime to get a good idea of the 1st Doctor's personality.

This scene is so powerful. The Doctor ran from Gallifrey because he was scared of the legends. The monsters from beyond time like the Hybrid. Beings of terrible power, gods and demons. He ran because he thought he could avoid it all. But in this moment he sees that his very decision to run, is exactly what sealed his fate. And not only did he not escape the legends. But in his future, he is the greatest and most terrible legend of them all. The one even the other legends fear.

Dalek Invasion In Journeys End.actually all of the season 4 finale was epic The Doctors rooftop speech in The Eleventh Hour. The Epic Music used in the final scenes of Vampires in Venice. The TARDIS revealing itself in the Oval Office. The Speech the Doctor Makes to the silence as man first sets foot on the moon , River song revealed to be Amy’s daughter. Lastly: The Scene were all 13 doctors Were onscreen at once and flew all there TARDISs into Gallifrey to save it from destruction by a Dalek fleet. So NO this is not the most Epic Moment in Doctor Who , Moffat was trying to make it epic but it falls flat and last 20 seconds.

I still think this was the cleverest counter measure any of the Doctor's enemies have ever used against him. Showing the darkest moments of the Doctor's life, accurately but shorn entirely of context, to his youngest and most naive self, during a crisis of self doubt about his own morality? That would mess up most of us, but imagine you're a strong contender for being the literal main cause of death in the universe... *Damn*
@gameover939014 күн бұрын
Honestly that should have been the plot, the first doctor was already deadset on not regenerating because he to him regenerating was creating a new man, not a new version of himself. And now he’s see what he will become if he follows through with regenerating, a Man feared by the entire universe, a man who does whatever he wants because he can and what he does has earn numerous names and titles of untold carnage. Bro would need a serious convincing conversation from his future self to make him go through with it.

I think Bill's face during that whole Doctor of War bit is all of our faces: for as much as we know that the Doctor has left death and destruction in his wake, he never started or asked for those fights and he leaves behind just as much life behind him too. It's easy for him to be labeled a villain and a monster, mostly because he himself doesn't see himself as a hero, but we all know he is.

We still have yet to see the modern version of the Valeyard. "There is some evil in all of us, Doctor - even you. The Valeyard is an amalgamation of the darker sides of your nature, somewhere between your twelfth and final incarnation, and I may say you do not improve with age." The Master to the Sixth Doctor, The Trial of a Time Lord: The Ultimate Foe
@vullord6664 жыл бұрын
I mean, we kinda have. Like the Master said The Valeyard is an “amalgamation” of the darker sides of your nature. We’ve seen a dark side to every Modern Doctor in the revived Era. 12 alone had a lot of moments where he bent his own rules or straight out broke them. We are then told (again by the Master; like you just said) that the Valeyard exists somewhere between the Doctor’s 12th and final incarnation (which was so strange at the time considering timelords only have 12 regenerations and 13 incarnations). Since the time of the Doctor and the Doctor got more regenerations we never got a number (so infinite was possible; also the whole timeless children thing that I want to forget exists), so basically the Valeyard is anywhere between the 11th Doctor (or is it 10th since 10 regenerated and kept the same face?) and infinity. I don’t think they’ll ever make a whole era where the Doctor is completely dark; it would be cool if they brought back the Valeyard as a villain though (I mean they’re still a time traveler; hmm, I wonder how the TARDIS feels about The Valeyard and when the Doctor goes dark... things to ponder). That or the master was just lying; they can really do whatever they want with the Valeyard (I don’t expect Chibnall to though considering his run so far).
