The 1911 was not developed for WW2. It was actually developed during the US occupation of the Philippines after the Spanish American war which started in 1898. The Moro's tribe were religious zealots and were often hopped up on opiates. They tried for years to force the Spanish off their islands and continued when the US took over after defeating the Spanish. The issued side arm at the time was a .38 revolver and it did not have the stopping power to stop a charging Moro's. Since the Moro's loved to use knives and machetes, if you didn't stop them before reaching you, you tended to get a nasty wound, if not out right killed, from the bladed weapons. It was discovered that older Model 1873 Colt revolvers in .45 caliber did a much better job of stopping the Moro's. Hence the Army wanting a new weapon in that same caliber. Hence over a decade later the Colt 1911 .45 ACP pistol was issued to the US Army.

Get your history straight. It’s a 1911 because that’s when the Army excepted the weapon. And Chuck Yeager, you should be embarrassed.
