I felt called by Christ to quit alchohol. I quit at 19 years old on January 2nd this year. I am officially 6 months sober. I feel amazing, and I am filled with so much aspiration and determination in my life. Growing up in high school, my friends and I would get slammed on weekends, and this carried into getting drunk (or at least having a few drinks) usually 3 times a week in college, sometimes more. If you’re a young lad like me and you’ve thought about stopping, this is your cue! God is always good, and prayer will help. I was by no definition an alcoholic, but I’ve seen bad alcoholism in my family, and watched it almost ruin it to be very honest with you all. I love you, and no matter where you’re at, I believe you’ll put in the hard work to make your life better.

Met a girl who I’m quickly falling in love with 3 months ago. Kept my alcoholism a secret until 2 weeks ago when I ignored her calls all day until the next day because I was too wasted to talk to her. I knew if she answered the phone she’d know I was drunk. She had suspicions that I was a heavy drinker because I’d drink a lot when we were together but I stayed in control enough to not make it obvious. When I wasn’t with her I would really drink. I told her the truth and she gave me an ultimatum and rightfully so. Been sober for two weeks. There’s no way I’m losing her. I’m doing it for her and myself. There is no circumstance in which alcohol is worth losing someone who loves you.

I just passed ten years alcohol free. For me, it happened in a moment at 33,000 feet in an airplane bathroom. I was half lit and as I looked in the mirror something came over me. I said out loud "I'm done" and I walked backed to my seat. I threw my fresh drink away the flight attendant had just put on my tray table, and that was it. I walked off that plane and have never had the desire to drink again. God healed me of my alcohol problem it that moment. He can heal any of you of whatever ails you. Open your heart and let him in.

I just turned 30, but I’m single never married no kids. So for me it wasn’t that I was going to lose my family, but that my career which is starting to really take off and the aging debilitating hangovers like Tucker said is what did it for me. As the wise Jordan Peterson said, “The best way to quit drinking is to get something in your life going that is so good, that is WORTH not screwing up.” Similar to how you have to replace bad habits with better ones. (My parents both quit smoking cigs 20 years ago and became gum chewing maniacs to take the edge off. I’ve also heard sunflower seeds) but anyway. Whether it’s your family or career or health or money or a combo of all the above, JP is dead nuts on, IMHO

@@jaywinterbrook Same dude, legit. For me it was like an opportunity thing. Like, "well I don't have to work tomorrow (a Tuesday, I'm a professional musician so I work weekends and I'm around that shit all the time) so I better get drunk tonight and then by Wednesday I'll be at least back to near 100%" and it was like, wtf am I doing? I BETTER get drunk today?!?! I DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO. But I felt like I should. Which is INSANE. And that was it. I flipped a switch. I've always thought I was a "responsible" addict/alcoholic, I thought I was being good by going and buying a liter of vodka, lowest calories, least nitrates for hangover, and then drinking the whole thing at home, instead of going to the bar and driving home or burdening someone to give me a ride. Do that made it "ok" to me. I'm not saying I'll never have another drop of alcohol again. But what I AM never going to do again is go out and buy a bottle of vodka and bring it home. For me, But yeah. That, combined with all my idols who have gotten sober, they are WAY better than their, shall I say "less than sober" counterparts.

I quit drinking 13 years ago. I drank from age 13 to age 43. So, I drank for 30 years. Anyways, after I quit I did not feel any different. Things were about the same in my life. The cravings continued for 6 months. Then they went away. That was when I noticed the physical change. My liver was getting healthy. I looked better, I felt better. Then within 2 years, everything improved dramatically. My energy level, which was already high, went off the charts. That productivity, lead to more things getting done. My thinking improved as well. Less negative thoughts, more constructive ideas emerged. Then I was able to take on more things at the same time. It was like a 'compounding' effect. Positive things, reinforced other positive things. But, beware...you will end up leaving people. You'll recognize that they are not good for you. You wake uo. Everyone just stared at it wobble (in slow-mo to me) to a complete stop. When I stooped to scoop it up I eyed everyone as I stood back up and waited for the wisecracks to flow. That's when he said, "Well, it takes a bigger man to quit it than it does to start doing it- anyone can do that." That and his hand on my shoulder have taken me a long way away from where I was. I’m now 60 days without alcohol, I drank 2 bottles of wine almost every night for 20 years. 2024 has been unkind in some areas of my life, and I was passed between alcohol and anxiety. Little did I know there was a secret storm brewing in the background, and one night I had the most severe episode of psychosis. To the point where I felt my head was in a vice, the pain was unbearable and I’ve never felt anything like it, I was screaming into my duvet, I was possessed. I’m now sober because of being scared of that level of pain and fear returning. Something happened to me that night and flicked a switch in my life.

I quit cold turkey March 17, 2020 St. Patrick’s Day. Ordered a Baileys on Ice $9.00. I said that’s it for me no more booze. Free again. Stopped drinking for 15 years once involved in church. My first alcohol experience at a Christmas Party with my parents. The spiked punch was for the adults and right next to that punch bowl was the kids punch. I started drinking the spiked punch. A little while later my friend and I walked down the street to her house. Her parents kept their bottles of booze on the counter top. I began drinking straight out of the bottles. Walked back and the Christmas Party and I was absolutely staggering drunk. Sitting outside in the dark saying my mom is going to be sooo mad at me. I was 13 years old! I should probably have been taken to hospital for alcohol poisoning but this was in 1964! Tucker good for you. I credit my Lord and Savior that I’m alive at 73 years.

I was a teen in the late 60s & early 70s so drugs & drinking were quite the norm for me & my crowd. But I quit all of it at the age of 25 when I returned to the Lord. There have been a handful of times when I thought…”I really need a drink” the illness and death of my husband, for one, but I never followed through with the thought. Good on you for listening to that thought, voice or direction that cautioned you of the consequences!

I know I am lucky. I was in the hospital and nearly died from alcohol poisoning. 17 days…I walked out clean and done. I come from a long long history of alcoholics. After watching them and my own experience I can say that getting sober is the easy part once you get past withdrawal. STAYING sober is the beast. I did ok because alcohol was not my drug of choice but a crutch I used to stop pills and it backfired so relapse wasn’t an issue for me praise God but all my family struggled for years with relapses before finally being done. May God bless all of you out there struggling. Keep praying. Keep believing! You can do it!

Carl Jung said, "Life really does begin at 40. Everything before that is just research." I identified as an "alcoholic" between the ages of 30 & 40, then I found a Higher Power that really does love me more than I loved myself. I am 78 years old today, and I feel sorry for people in AA that are not drinking out of fear. That is the reason I haven't been back to AA in 38 years. Today I am addicted to connecting to my "Higher Power." Self-depreciation serves no one.
