NGL, I've also kind of struggled with 2023 as a whole - I think country is having a banner year especially in the indie scene (Jason Isbell, Ruston Kelly, Gabe Lee, Lori McKenna, Karen Jonas), and I've found a decent amount of pop (Jessie Ware, Hamish Hawk, Caroline Polachek), R&B (Amaarae), and even experimental music and metal (Iravu, Algiers, Victory Over The Sun, Swans, Model/Actriz, Mesarthim) that has clicked, but it's felt so much in its own enclaves that the broader crossover hasn't happened the way you'd hope. I've got enough for lists, but it does feel like it's a 'smaller-feeling' year instead of one with huge standout staples that monopolize conversation.

You’re not the only one - it’s been slow for me this year as a music fan. Not a lot has been popping for me, though we’ll see how the rest of the year will pan out. Ngl, I was relieved to see Neon Noir on your list - I was on the edge of my seat for it and, low key, wanted affirmation lol. Regardless, thank you for addressing the question and all the best!

Thanks for sharing, it’s always subjective, a good year for someone can be a terrible year for another person. For me this has been a good year to score some records I was missing in my collection. New releases I’m excited, the new Grails album, Baroness & Kvelertak. And so far I am enjoying the new Blood Ceremony and Fucked up albums. Take care!

Yes! I feel the same exact way about music this year. Been relistening to actually older albums and just getting knowledge and more time with them. I think the past 3-4 years I’ve grinded new albums so I think now I feel a little burnt out form discovering and exploring. I do think it’s a bit more reflective of the year being slow and just uneventful and that’s okay though June was an amazing month.

I've been feeling like 2023 has been a great year for music but I'm an old guy who is excited about new albums by my old favorites like Mudhoney, Lucero, Godflesh, Cheater Slicks, The Melvins, and Guided By Voices so maybe stuff that's not your scene. I've liked tons of Death Metal too. I've never had the new music sucks attitude but it is definitely the case that as I get older new albums and artists have a bigger and pile of my old favorites I still want to listen to that they have to fight for my attention with. Music is also less and less made for me as a target audience. I can still appreciate music when I'm not the target audience but I think it's natural to connect most with the stuff that was basically aimed right at me. I also happen to live in a college where two venues have been getting having shows every weekend so I'm seeing more live music than ever. That's keeping me excited. Anyway, fall is coming which means the biggest rush of new stuff. Hopefully something will hit for you.

Would love to tease you for your age but I'm right there with you, man. I've mostly spent this year filling in gaps of my favorite artists discographies or classics I've never gotten around to. I think it makes sense that this is a down year when last year was so packed to the brim with amazing stuff.

Think it's been a decent year- in addition to Lamp of Murmur and Thulcandra, Cloak, Helleruin, Necrofier, Ruim, Blackbraid, Outer Heaven, Static Abyss, Godflesh, Poison Ruin, Serpent Corpse. Fugitive and Uada dropped cool singles.

I also have been listening to a lot of older stuff. Only recently has newer stuff really grabbed me. But my favorites of the year are: -Wallowing’s ‘Earth Reaper’. By far my favorite metal record. -Primitive Man and Full of Hell’s collab record. -Young Fathers’ ‘Heavy Heavy’ is a fun, artsy pop album -Everything But the Girl’s comeback album is great if you like that style of British, 90s downtempo -Woods and Segal’s ‘Maps’ -McKinley Dixon’s new one -Sunrot made a great sludge metal record with ‘The Unfailing Rope’ -I don’t like a lotta post rock, but the new Golden Hyms Sing ‘Hurrah’ is great

For me, more often than not, I find newer releases and don't always latch onto them initially but somewhere down the line I end up liking or loving them later either that year or a year or so later. I don't think it's an age thing it's just how it ends up. With that notion I think that's what's so great about music in general. The discovery aspect especially in metal.

since the pandemic felt like it ended last year I felt like alot of artists immediately put out to recoup their losses from the prior years during COVID. so they're now low on reserves/writing/experiencing life again to make music again. it's just a refractory period. touring frequency is similad to releases they're tied to the last push and pull from the pandemic

I feel really similarly. I feel like 2022 may have been the year for artists to come out of their COVID shell and hit the music world with what they had been cooking up during quarantine. There were so many great releases in just the first couple months of the year and the momentum kept up the whole year. BCNR, AC, Big Thief, Alvvays, Daniel Rossen, Jockstrap, KDot, Smino, Sudan Archives, Black Midi, Ashenspire, Black Thought, Death's Dynamic Shroud, etc... this year it feels like both the indie and mainstream scene are just lacking. And I haven't had the motivation to look through the underground that much either. The only big albums that have stuck with me this year were Caroline Polachek's and JPEG/Danny's. The lesser known albums that I really liked were The Lemon Twigs', Geese's, and the new Loma Prieta, who I just found pretty recently and have a great mix of heavy and melodic sounds.

I've kind of had the opposite year: I haven't found much great hip hop at all (besides Billy Woods and JPEG/Danny Brown), but I've found lots of great non-hip hop albums. Besides some of the ones you mentioned at the end of the video, my favorites have been Incendiary, Jesus Piece, Jason Isbell, Blackbraid, Divide & Dissolve, Colin Stetson, and Model/Actriz. Great video as always!

I think people are releasing great music every year. The case with me is that I’ve always missed some records at the beginning of the year that I don’t end up covering on my channel and then I go back, and I’m like “oh shit, that is really good!” I have heard that new Tenhi record; it really brought some peace through a tumultuous time I had back in June. I feel like Trespasser did a better anarchist black metal album than Dawn Ray’d did; the songs on the latter just didn’t stick with me, unfortunately.

Honestly, I've been enjoying this year. There's definitely been a lot of interesting stuff across the spectrum, but it does feel like all the stuff I like is less important than it used to be if that makes sense. Like there's tons of cool music across all genres, but it doesn't feel like we got anything that is really going to define their respective spheres this year. So it really feels like you have to be super motivated to go digging through mediocrity across a bunch of generes to find projects.

Myke once again great video. This vid struck a cord with me. I feel this year is surprising lackluster for the mainstream in terms of rap music. Compared to last year and before not much worth while music has been coming out. That’s why I’ve listening to other stuff. Like you said, stuff I already heard or older music. I do have faith that maybe the Travis Scott album will help revive a bit of this dead year. Also maybe this is because there’s so much to worry about in this world I feel people are tired of listening to something generic.

Some years I'm excited to keep up with new music, some years it feels like homework. This year so far the prevailing trends have been very much not to my taste, so why keep score? There's plenty of old music that I never got around to, whole genres to dig into if I'm not feeling what's happening at the moment.

I’m unfortunately one of those people you mentioned where new music just doesn’t move me. It’s not by choice and I’m not disgruntled, I just generally cannot find much new that grabs me the way it used to. I feel it is more of a problem with me than any knock on the music itself.

I think it's been a disappointing year so far, but only for rap. I have the feeling that since last year (or so), rap has really become less interesting. The guys I used to listen to aren't as good as they used to be (Future, Freddie Gibbs on his solo album, the guys from TDE...) and the new faces don't manage to make an impression on me. But if you go outside rap, there really are some really good albums. For example, I loved the albums That! Feels Good! by Jessie Ware and Desire, I Want to Turn Into You by Caroline Polachek. And now I've just listened to Julie Byrne's (folk singer) latest project, and it's really good!
