Admiral Yamamoto was against attacking the US because he actually studied at Harvard University in the US, was naval attaché at the Japanese embassy in Washington DC, and had travelled extensively throughout the US. So he knew that America was industrially and militarily powerful and that Japan could not win a protracted war with them. Ultimately he was overruled by others in the Japanese High command who underestimated the US and didn't listen to him.

Attacking the Soviets was just as dumb as an idea. The Japanese would get fucked trying to get through Siberia. Also there was a reason for the preemptive strike on America. Japan needed the resources of south east asia(Philippines) and pacific which would have caused war with the US anyway.

Japan had no choice but attack US. US embargoed them oil so Japan had to conquer Southeast Asia to get it and US would attack Japan eventually after they invaded so they dealt the first blow hopping it would destroy American naval fleet.

The USA issued an oil embargo on Japan once they occupied French Indochina, thereby cutting them off from about 85 percent of their oil income. In order to continue their war with China, Japan needed to get oil from the Dutch East Indies. Thus, the “go south” option was picked because they really didn’t have any other option at that point. I personally think that they would have attacked the USSR at some point had the USA not issued its embargo.

Attacking the Soviet Union would have actually been the SMART move. They were already fighting a massive war with the Germans on the Eastern Europe Front, Siberia and the Pacific Russian ports would have been ripe for the taking. Japan and Germany could have honestly done the Soviet Union in if they coordinated. This of course would mean Britain would be the only major "free" stronghold left in Europe.
@thunderbird1921
@thunderbird1921 2 жыл бұрын
@Kazumaf Great point about the Lend Lease agreements. People forget that America was helping equip them AND Britain during the war. That's why I wonder if the Japanese and the Germans jointly attack the Soviets in 1941 (before America ever enters), perhaps they could have won at least on that front. The reason Germany collapsed in the war is because Hitler idiotically declared war on the United States when he was already fighting two superpowers (though to be honest, the British Commonwealth may have pulled it off in the West in a MUCH longer and grueling war). Japan lost because they attacked a country that had industrial capabilities they couldn't match and their own limited resources as an island nation. We can speculate scenarios, but it was all but game over for the Axis after December 8, 1941.
@malickfan7461
@malickfan7461 2 жыл бұрын
@Kazumaf I don’t know if a joint axis attack could have “killed” the USSR, but it seems possible that they could have won a partial victory with favorable peace negotiations. Contrary to popular narratives, the Germans and Russians did send out peace envoys via neutral Sweden to each other in the hopes of ending the war. The main sticking point was the future status of Ukraine. Hitler really wanted it to be transferred into German influence so the Reich could be agriculturally self sufficient, but Stalin was insistant on keeping it. It wasn’t until after the battle of Kursk in mid 1943 that the Soviets stopped sending peace feelers to Germany. Had Japan been able to attack Russia, then perhaps Stalin would have been more open to making bigger concessions rather than risking an economic/ logistical collapse from a two front war. It should also be noted that Japan taking up arms against the ussr would negate the latter’s advantage in manpower. The ussr’s population during the war was about 168 million people. The Europeans axis (Germany, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and Finland) was roughly 152 million and Japan had a population of 72 million. Keep in mind too that Germany’s high water mark within the ussr in 1942 saw them with a third of the Soviet population under their occupation. So the combined populations of just Germany and Japan alone would have been significantly higher than the number of people under direct soviet administration in 1942.

@@thunderbird1921 But if Japan Invaded the USSR I'd probably be a long time until they really got any useful land or resources from them as about 70% or so of the land is barren Taiga which would be hard to take because of Supply trains that'd be needed for such a travel the Cold and that Some Mongolian or Chinese could try and go into Siberia to raid the Japanese, taking advantage of their situation and so Invading the USSR would more then likely be a waste of Manpower, equipment and Resources for the Japanese which would be better utilized against China, Britain and her Colonies or The Americans who were looking like they'd join the war soon due to the NAZI's Convoy raids against them including the fact that Japan wanted control over the Pacific something America wouldn't just let them do especially with American hawaii and American Philippines

There was another reason for Japan being so keen to have peace with the Soviets in 1941. Japan was already at war with China for nearly 4 years by then. Although Japan had been winning, it couldn't wrap up the war there. Over a million Japanese troops were already committed in China and far more were needed. From 1937 to 1941, the Soviets were the Chinese only allies and had been supplying arms and airplanes to the Chinese. The deal the Japanese reached with the Soviets in 1941 was for the Soviets to cease helping the Chinese so that Japan could gain final victory in China. The Chinese, deprived of help from the Soviets from 1941, turned to the Americans. The Americans then started their embargo on Japan in 1941 and that became the catalyst for Japan to make its moves against the Americans.

 @Rainbow Lion The military aid provided by the Soviet Union to China was the result of the Sino-Soviet Non-aggression Pact signed in 1937. An important element of the military aid was for the Soviet Union to supply China with warplanes and Soviet pilots which formed the backbone of the Chinese airforce during the Second Sino Japanese War before 1941. It was called Operation Zet in the Soviet Union. Operation Zet ceased after the signing of the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact in 1941. The ceasation of military aid to China was in fact written into Article Two of the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact which stated "Should one of the Contracting Parties become the object of hostilities on the part of one or several third powers, the other Contracting Party will observe neutrality throughout the duration of the conflict". The Japanese were fully aware of the presense of the Soviet pilots flying Polikarpov fighters against them before 1941 and knew the Soviets withdrew them after the signing of the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact.

One of the biggest reasons why, and something very few pop historians grasp is that the Axis were allied basically only on paper. Prior to the 2nd world war, Germany traded more with the USSR than with Japan and conducted more training exercises with them. Germany even actively hindered Japans war effort by training the KMT's elite 88th army.

Japanese logistics were even worse than the Germans'. If they'd been delayed (which they would be in such terrain and such poor infrastructure facing proper resistance) their operations would be blunted and would slow to a crawl, if they could keep going at all and not be forced back like they were in China or new guinea. The Japanese wouldn't represent that big a threat when they're so far away and in the least populated part of the USSR. Yakutsk and the Baikal are both 1100 miles from Harbin in different directions, krasnoyarsk another 500 miles west of the Baikal, and novosibirsk another 400 miles west beyond that. Even if the Japanese marched 20km non stop every day from the start of July following the shortest main route over land (which they would have to do) from the border and with no delays whatsoever, they still wouldn't have reached novosibirsk by the time the Germans were stopped in December. Just reaching lake Baikal would be a longer distance than the Germans going from Warsaw to Moscow. The overland distances are simply too huge for Japan to conquer outright, and Japanese logistics wouldn't allow them to threaten any important regions. Nor would it be able to support a large army, meaning the soviets wouldn't have to devote as much against them. Assuming of course that the Japanese army air force and tanks aren't immediately wiped out by their heavier and more numerous soviet counterparts. With these factors and the Germans slowed by exhausted units and crippled by logistics issues, I don't believe a Japanese invasion would have allowed the Germans to take Moscow. Reach it maybe, but not take it, and they'd still get pushed back by forces beyond the city

@@dragosstanciu9866 The rate at which Germany was advancing through USSR was staggering, if the Japanese had even just stalled the Serbian divisions from assisting the European front, Germany may have in the very least reached Moscow. Defeating a common enemy will benefit all participants. Bismarck demonstrated this by forcing Austro-Hungarian Empire into a two front war with Prussia and Italy. Even though the Italians didn't perform well in the conflict, they ultimately benefited from the affair.

In fact, one of the main reasons was the fact that before 1938, Japan and the Soviet Union fought hard wars in Monogolia, where Japan lost. But in 1939, the USSR and Germany signed the Molotov-Ribentropp non-aggression pact. Which was the last in Europe, before that almost all European countries signed similar pacts, the USSR did it last. But this Agreement infuriated the Japanese. They considered this as almost a betrayal on the part of Germany. And thus the Japanese, who suffered land defeats from the USSR, switched to a new military doctrine, which included the concept of mainly naval dominance in Oceania. Colossal changes took place in the general staff; land generals were replaced by naval admirals. As a result, Japan did not open a second front in the East of the USSR, but attacked the United States. This allowed the release of the USSR troops from the Far East and Siberia, which prevented the fall of Moscow and changed the course of history, which thus took the first step towards the victory of the USSR. If this had not happened, then perhaps Moscow would have fallen and the course of history would have been different. That's how important the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was for the overall victory of the USSR.

Japan got whipped by the Red Army’s armor and artillery at Nomohan Mongolia in 1939 and the raw materials Japan needed weren’t readily available in Russia’s Far East. Being at war with largest population, largest economy and largest Empire was, temporarily, enough for the Japanese in early 1942. By Midway they realized they’d bitten off more than they could chew and Russia was off the table. They’d let Germany crush the Russians and they’d maybe mop up in the Far East.

I guess they did'nt attacked the soviets since that would overstrech them. They had already an land front in china, and even if they deployed their finest units in manchuria, that would mean just more units to partialy loose and to supply, and the soviets just could dig in in siberia, still calling those units that defended moscow, wait for the germans to inreversebly loose and then push japan back al the way to south korea this time, since i would'nt know what other big push could get the USA into the war. But i think that in the alternate timeline, japan maybe would have some controll over south china, and south korea, mean while china would have its civil war, but this time the comunits would have it easier since they would gain north korea and maybe some land that the japanese controlled first. I think with japan coming out stronger then it did, They would still oil, rubber, etc. So they would attack ducht east indies and other british colonies. This has been done and over done many, many times over. Japan structured their empire based around the sea and sea warfare, with the land part being structured around quick movements close to the coast line. This is why they got bogged down in china which was much much militarily weaker than Japan Empire because they simple did not have the infrastructure, or doctrine, or materials to go far in land. This same principle was applied to USSR which was much larger than china, and much stronger military. The Japanese were not able to incure serious damage to USSR, if at all.

Great Video! In my historical analysis, three main reasons contributed to Japan's decision to attack Pearl Harbor (ignoring Siberia in the process): • 1) The memories of Khalkhin Gol (as the video already mentioned). Unlike the Germans, Japan did not underestimate the Russians. The Russian victory at Khalkhin Gol (which was led by Zhukov himself), was, at the very least, traumatic for the Japanese. The Japanese decision to attack Pearl Harbor and to ignore Siberia, in my historical analysis, dates back to the traumatic Japanese defeat at Khalkhin Gol. • 2) An eventual Japanese attack in Siberia would be a military "suicide" for Japan! If Siberia had been invaded, Japan would not only fight two enemies (China and USSR), but three (including the USA). If the Japanese had attacked Stalin's Russia via Siberia, Japan would have to wage a war on three fronts! Yes, the war with the US was inevitable for Japan (regardless of Pearl Harbor). Washington, in other words, would not tolerate a Japanese invasion of Siberia. Remember guys, the USSR was the pivot of the Anglo-American strategy! A possible Japanese invasion of Siberia and Stalin's final defeat, therefore, were two possibilities that Washington and London could not even consider and imagine. Moreover, the relations between Japan and the US were tense since 1940. Following the oil embargo proposed by Roosevelt (90% of the Japanese oil was imported from the USA), Washington, in fact, declared a real "trade war" against Japan. The oil embargo proposed by Roosevelt, which was encouraged and proposed by Molotov himself, had precisely the intention to prevent Japan from launching any military operation towards Southeast Asia and/or Siberia. By attacking Southeast Asia (including Pearl Harbor), however, Tokyo could still maintain a "suspicious peace" with Stalin on its northern flank. • 3) It was in Southeast Asia, not in Siberia, that Japan desired to create its Colonial Empire. It was through the conquest of the French, Dutch and English colonies of Southeast Asia, therefore, that Japan would be self-sufficient in oil, iron ore, coal and rubber for its war machine. Moreover, the Japanese decision to "avoid" Siberia was undoubtedly VITAL for the German defeat at the Battle of Moscow. If Japan had invaded Siberia, Stalin would be forced to fight on two fronts.
@juancarlosvalladares8486
@juancarlosvalladares8486 2 жыл бұрын
Agree with you. If Japan attacked USSR, it would have faced, not only a two front war (China and USSR), but a three front one (with USA). Japan needed resources, only attainable in the East Indies, so they needed to go south. The USA eventually would have joined the war, especially if Japan attacked the Phillippines. It was a matter of time. If Japan invaded the USSR, they would be the ones defeated first in WW2. USSR would have survived the Germans, even if Moscow fell. However, if Japan was defeated first and Germany last, it would have affected, not World War 2, but the Cold War outcome. USSR would have never liberated Eastern Europe, the Western Allies would have done it. USSR would have invaded the Japanese Empire. The Iron Curtain would have been in Asia instead of Europe. Also, the first nuclear bombs surely would have been dropped in Germany, not in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in this "What If" scenario.
@lif3andthings763

I disagree with the idea that the Battle of Moscow would have been lost if Japan had invaded. All Those troops weren’t actually stationed on the Manchurian border with Japan. They were from all over Eastern Russia. Remember that Germany had a non aggression pact with the Soviets too and they invaded unannounced. They wouldn’t fall for it again and there were forces kept on the Japanese border throughout the war.

The Battle of Khalkhin was a conflict that occurred between May 1939 and September 1939 over the border between Manchuria and the People's Republic of Mongolia. One of the Soviet-Japanese border conflicts (Manchukuo border conflict) that occurred intermittently in the 1930s between Manchuria, later Japan (Empire of Japan), and the Soviet Union, which had Mongolia as a satellite state bordering Manchukuo. One. It is divided into two phases, the first (May to June 1939) and the second (July to September 1939). The Imperial Japanese Army and the Soviet Red Army, which were backed by the conflict between the Manchukuo Imperial Army and the Mongolian People's Army, fought a battle, which was the largest military conflict in a series of Soviet-Japanese border conflicts. It became. Since both Japan and the Soviet Union concealed the damage and the incident itself to the outside, the Japanese side regarded Glasnost as "an overwhelming victory of the Soviet army, which had an overwhelming advantage in terms of troops, weapons, and supply." However, executives of the dictatorship such as Stalin, who suffered more damage than the Japanese army, and top domestic leaders such as Soviet military executives shared their reflection points. The number of casualties on the Japanese side was 18,000 to 23,000, and the Japanese Army, which suffered the greatest damage since the establishment of the Japanese Army, losing about 30 tanks and about 180 aircraft, was the Soviet Army before the battle. However, he overestimated the Soviet side because he misunderstood that he was overwhelmed after the incident. At least about 25,655 Soviet casualties in the Nomonhan incident, about 400 other armored vehicles such as tanks, and about 350 aircraft have been lost. The Japanese Army side did not know that the damage on the Soviet Army side that achieved the target itself was even more serious, and the Japanese Army executives who had many theories of Hokushin-ron just switched to the theory of Nanshin-ron, such as tanks, aircraft and logistics in this battle. I couldn't make use of my reflection points in the later war. On the contrary, the Soviet army shared the case with the national leader Stalin and the Soviet army counselor while hiding it from the outside, it was inferior in the number of aircraft, and there were almost no armored vehicles such as tanks, which was an overwhelming disadvantage. Incorporating various tactics taken by the Japanese army, which caused enormous damage by its own army, and improving weapons whose weaknesses were found, it was applied to the war with Germany that began in June 1941. If it is the theory of Hokushin-ron, it will not be a direct battle with the United States, which could not be done even if it wanted to participate in the parliament where the opposition to war intervention is the majority, and the Japanese side squeezed the Soviet Asian region around the Siberian railway with Germany. It is speculated that the German side defeated the Soviet leaders (European region) and the results of World War II had changed.

I have to disagree on this point, after operation barberossa was ine ffect, the soviets where in plan to move the vast majority of forces in the east to the west to attack the germans via the trans siberian railway, it would of been the perfect time to attack, although by this stage they had gone to attack the americans which in hindsight was foolish but understandable at the time given resource deficiency's, had they not done that and gone an full blown offensive on russia(likely a risk it all strategy given their situation) it would of been incredibly effective Russia wouldn't be able to defend a 2 front war against 2 incredibly strong armies, and the US at this stage would of still been in a 50/50 situation to get involved more which would of been ideal for the axis,

@@SomeRandomDude32 how much was that due to the fact they had their forces spread across their dominion, unlike other imperialists, they never used allied locals for the military so they where using their own limited citizens, given the seriousness of the situation you would think it's fair game that they go thin on those areas to attack the vital area that can turn the war and thus increase number significantly over what they had.
