Why Didn't Link Age In The Wind Waker?

When Link pulled the Master Sword from the Pedestal of Time in Ocarina of Time he was sealed and aged for seven years for being too young. Why didn't this happen to Link in The Wind Waker?

I'm guessing the sage did it because he knew nine year old link would be no match for Ganondorf. Remember he was watching over him and knew Ganondorf was waiting to ambush link after he opened the door. He knew link would need light arrows and more advanced tactics and gear to defeat ganondorf so he probably intervened and if not why was he watching over link if he wasnt going to protect him from being murdered?

In Ocarina of Time, Rauru, the Sage of Light, explains that he sealed Link in order to make him older in order to face Ganon. The sages aren't present in Wind Waker, thus he didn't age. Thought this was common knowledge.

Not exactly. It was the Master Sword itself what sealed Link's spirit into the Sacred Realm. However, the Master Sword lost its power before the new Link pulled it from the pedestal.

I figured that it was because he wasn't actually chosen as the hero. Technically he's just some kid who just so happened to be strong enough to be the hero which is why he had the raise the Tower of the Gods and complete the trials within. As he wasn't chosen, this was a trial that had to be overcome to prove himself worthy of being the hero. By completing the trials he showed himself already strong enough to wield the master sword without needing to be aged up.

Exactly. The vid is taking too much from other games. Yes it has ties with Oot but WW Link is not reincarnated with the power of Courage. It's within him yes, but not the Triforce Power. He proves himself to the Gods and is granted to secrets of the royal family. The sages are still waiting, as their pearls were brought together, trying to find a courageous vessel to test and try to end another reign.

@Patrick I recently played WW and at some point it says the hero left every equipment he had behind to go on his own journy, also spoiler alert, at the end when the triforce of courage is restored it fuses with WW link hand and the king proclaims this happens because link is actually reborn and a reincarnation of the past hero, the reason he did not had the triforce as he was born is because in this timeline the past hero Link loses his courage and the triforce he holds gets shattered across hyrule, but more than 3 times in the end of the game it confirms that the hero of winds is indeed another incarnation of link.

Here's my theory The Master Sword in Ocarina of time was being used as a Key inside the Chamber of time to keep the Sacred realm sealed While the Master Sword in Wind Waker was being used to seal time within Hyrule castle

Wind Waker Link is still one of my favorites because he had to prove himself as a hero since he didn't carry the spirit of the hero. He forced the gods to choose him as the next hero (Which I believe made his soul the new spirit of the hero to be passed down to Spirit Tracks Link)

You overcomplicated the reason. The answer is far more simple. In OoT, Ganondorf entered the Sacred Realm to claim the Triforce. We are told that the Realm "is a mirror that reflects what is in the heart of one who enters it and touches the Triforce". We know that this corruption happened because the Temple of Light was under seige and was the last bastion of light in OoT. At the end of OoT, Ganondorf is sealed in the "Dark Realm" and in WW we see that he returned from that Realm when a purple rift is found under the Gerudo Fortress. The Master Sword did not seal the Hero of Winds in the Sacred Realm because it didn't exist - it was now the Dark Realm.

The Master Sword had been weakened by the time WW Link got to it. And when he did restore it, it wasn't by placing it back in the pedestal of time otherwise he would've most likely been sealed for 4 years until the blade felt he was ready

There is evidence in BotW that the link in that game pulled the Master Sword at around 12 or 13 and he didn't get time skipped either. I think one possible variable could be lack of propper training for OoT link. WW Link Trains his swordsmanship with one of the old men of the island, and BotW Link trained from a super early age and was a prodigy. OoT link doesn't really have pre existing combat training from what I remember. I don't think that alone would be the reason, but it might be part of it

It was stated that Wind Waker's production was pressed for time to meet the deadline. There were 2 whole temples cut out of the game actually. So it's possible that they might have originally intended to have him age in some way and had to cut it out for the sake of time. From a narrative perspective, i have a couple more ideas. The Master Sword in WW was what kept Ganon's minions from moving. Once WW Link removed the sword, the flow of time returned to normal for them. So in a sense, rather than inhibiting the hero with a time skip, it held Ganon's minions in time instead. So they went through a time skip where the hero could move freely, it was probably intended to hold Ganon as well, but with his triforce of power, he was able to break free of the bind. My other idea was that WW link wasn't actually supposed to be the hero. The King of red lions said to Jabun "I don't believe he is related to the hero, but I believe in his courage" or something like that... So it's possible that the sword didn't exactly recognize him as the hero, but without its upkeep from the sages, it couldn't deny him either. WW link became a hero through his own will and was recognized afterward, which also meant that he didn't need a time skip, he had already proven himself, as shown by his wielding of the Triforce of Courage.

Toon Link went through a series of trials to prove his worth. He became worthy by collecting the 3 Goddess Pearls, going through the Tower of the Gods, going through the two temples to restore it's power, AND even went through the process of gathering the 8 shards of the Triforce of Courage. Toon Link worked soo much harder to just attain the Master Sword, and even more to restore it's power. That's WITHOUT going through the trouble to collect the Triforce shards! Toon Link bypassed the age restriction due to going through soo many trails prior to getting the Master Sword and becoming worthy through his hard work and dedication.

WW Link not being sealed away is simple. He was needed NOW, not seven years from now. Giving Ganondorf seven years unhindered in the Great Sea would allow him ample time to rip the Triforce of Wisdom from Tetra and piece together the Triforce of Courage. In OoT, Link was given the Triforce of Courage as soon as Ganon touched the full Triforce in the Sacred Realm. As a result, sealing OoT Link away kept the Triforce of Courage safe for as long as necessary to build up his strength. Simply put, the powers that be in WW did not have the same luxury of time.

Nintendo did say that they will going to age in Wind Waker as you progressed through the game would have been awesome if they did, lots of fans of including myself were hoping to see this in the HD remake as well as deleted dungeons and islands ! I think its because it woulda conflicted with the themes of the story, since its more about a regular goofy young man who only does this dressup as tradition and becomes a hero in his own right when something he cares about is taken away from him, that being his little sister. The overarching important stuff only comes in progressively and that's where Toon Link 'grows up' so to speak. It's about a normal boy becoming a hero and aging him up woulda derailed that along with the friends he made just by adventuring and finding them on his way.

I think because Zelda at the end of Ocarina of time removed Adult Link from the timeline, the mastersword was removed along with him (it was strapped to his back) and the mastersword we see in windwaker is a completely new sword forged by only two remaining sages instead of six.

To me Toon link is the age of adult link, he's just on the stubby side and the biggest proof is his sister, she would be the age of child link and we see toon link is considerably older, old enough to leave home on an adventure and to be seen as an adult by the swordsman of the island. The game also starts on links birthday and they say when people hit the age of the legendary hero they wear a green tunic.

It's an interesting theory, but I have another one. What if wielding the Master Sword is not a matter of age, but size? Have you noticed that the Master Sword is larger in Oot than in WW? They should be the same size, and if they are, that means The Hero of Winds is bigger than he seems. So he is able to wield the sword properly because he is about the same size as all other Links despite being the youngest. When the Hero of Time first pulls the Master Sword, it is bigger than him. He would have had a challenge using it in battle. That leads him to being sealed away for 7 years.

Because that wasn't the actual master sword. The real one disappeared with the hero of time. Even Ganon tells you that it's not the real one and mocks it, telling you to take it back down to the people that made it. I think you also have to bless it to get it to work

I think that WW Link must be 16, because its said that they dress themselves as the hero of time when they are his age. The thing is that they only know OoT Link as a hero (before that he was kown, but not as a hero, not for the hylians at least) after he pulls the master sword (16 years). So WW Link is 16 years old. I dream of a Zelda game where the Ocarina of time becomes an important Item again wich will Link allow to travel through time again. Wich could make some interesting puzzles for the dungeons or open world exploration. But because we already got the concept of time travelling I don’t think that will ever happen. Timmysohn hell, a game reusing concepts from majora’s mask made anew with current tech could be wild too, I mean even just the mask system alone and allowing you to swap between playable characters/species in any capacity would just be so cool to have again imo

Superslash That would be really nice. The first idea that came to my mind is being able to put a rito mask on and then fly through hyrule. Or you could make underwater areas explorable again with the zoras mask. And with the scale of a Botws Hyrule just these two masks could lead to some interesting puzzles/mini games and secrets. Sometimes concepts are done again but in new ways. Skyward Sword had a section of the game where time travel was an important mechanic, so I don't see why they wouldn't implement time travel in future Zelda games. It just depends on what they want to do.

Soup I don’t think it’s impossible but I think it’s not really likely. I didn’t even had skyward sword in mind because sadly it is the only 3D Title I couldn’t play up until now. But as you said we had time travel already two times and skyward sword kinda did it the way I imagined it so I don’t see much chances for it to happen.

I saw a theory once that suggested the Master Sword transports its user to a time in which it was best to try and save the day. If Link stayed young in Ocarina of Time, he would’ve died for sure. If he waited five years in Wind Waker, the world would’ve already been destroyed. I’m not sure how that ties into other games, but it kinda makes sense.

I always like saying that the master sword, being a living being, changes in both appearance and choice of when and how the hero is ready to wield the blade, much like the fact that link couldn’t wield it without dying in breath of the wild unless he built up his physical/spiritual strength.

I thought it was because the sages made that one in replica of the master sword in ocorina and when he disappeared the master sword did with him. And needed different requirements to get the power to seal away Gannon and when he turned to stone that was the sages powers.

I always assumed because WW Link was already the age of the Hero of Time, hence the significance of his birthday.

Umm...does the sacred realm even exist in that timeline anymore after Ganon escaped...or there could be another reason Wind Waker Link may of not of aged is because he doesn't have the Spirit of the Hero that is bound to the Cycles of Demise's curse.

A few extra things, link from WW was not a chosen hero like the rest. He was just a brave kid who rose to the occasion. If there could be a chosen hero in that timeline, hyrule would never have been flooded. He was only in green because of tradition. Also, the reason there is adult link concept art is because the team wanted to make link age slowly over the course of the game. It was a mechanic that got scrapped.

Or it could be the whole lack of a hero thing that causes the Great Flood. WW Link is brand new in that part of the timeline and as such the Master Sword doesn't have a pre-established optimum age for wielding to go off of.

I thought about his as well. My assumption is that because the Master Sword isn't in the Pedestal of Time, within the Temple of Time, acting as a key that brides the Light World from the Sacred Realm - there is no place for the Master Sword to seal WW Link to age up a few years, as well as the sword being weakened initially.

Perhaps it had to do with the maturity of the sages that link was locked away. Young link could have wielded the Master Sword in OOT, but the sages were not ready to do their thing. Zelda, Ruto, and Nabooru were all children still. Who's to say there were sages alive at the time of the same power. Circumstances didn't line up so Link had to be set on pause for everyone else to get ready.

I think it's simply because the forced stasis done to the Hero of Time was all just Rauru's plan. He thought that the Master Sword had to be wielded by a 16-17 year old, just based off the fact the previous and original wielder of the Master Sword was 17, so he forced Link to remain the Temple of Light until he was the "correct" age. "The Wind Waker" has nobody around to make Link wait around until he gets older. The idea that it's connected to the Master Sword not being at full power makes sense too, though.

Windwaker link wasn't a descendent of the hero. He was just a kid. where a big bird kidnapped his sister, and he took it upon himself to save her. He wasn't born with hero blood. He worked hard to become a hero! That's why he had to do the trial of the goddesses and ring that bell! Had he been a descendent, he would have probably been locked in the chamber and aged. But like you said, Hyrule was flooded, which could also play a part on it.

I've always been of the opinion that the hero of wind was already deemed powerful enough to wield the sword and that young link from the ocarina of time wasn't strong enough.

I’ll edit this once I’ve watched the video in full but I’ll wager that drawing the Sword in the Temple of Time had a hand in the process in OoT. In Windwaker the Sword is found in Hyrule Castle. Edit: Solid points in the video. I still feel that the location is a large reason as to why but not the only one

I thought it was because Ganon hadn't taken over the world in Ocarina of Time so the Master Sword/Sages thought he should grow older while in Wind Waker, Ganon was taking over and Link had to take him out. Think I heard it somewhere

Well link was supposed to age in windwaker throughout the game concept art backing it up. Whether he was supposed to age throughout periodically, or like ocarinas age system after he pulls the master sword is unknown, but was an idea at one point.

I thought about it like this, The Hero Of Time is the “Hero of Time” he was meant to travel through time. WW link is the “Hero of Winds” He has no need to go through time. And it is possible that WW link was stronger than Oot link. So he did not need to be sealed for 7 years.
