Mahito physicals before shibuya were trash hell even in shibuya most of his physicals are trash outside of his soul manipulation giving him weapon arms and making clones even then yuji and was stronger the only reason Mahito wasn’t dead is domain expansion and soul manipulation which lets you change the shape and structure of your body. Mahito is very hax but not really that powerful even durability wise Mahito has to constantly change his soul. As we see when he can’t he’s barely hanging on even in shibuya when yuji combos mahito due is barely hanging on soul manipulation literally is Mahito crutch. The only good physicals he has is like against a suppressed nanami against a mentally broken yuji and final evolution Mahito which is against only because of his ability and even then it was unstable as towards the end it was falling apart. Like the only thing that would have saved Mahito was the extra evolution but honestly I don’t think that’s an impressive statement especially when mahito is the one who has the upper hand for the most part yet proceeds to fumble the bag in every way.

Ok I’m a manga reader so there is more context that I am taking into account. It seemed (both in anime and manga) that sukuna is generally enjoying the show and fight and growth of these two warriors. The two being BOTH mahito and yuji and I think that’s what you and a lot of commenters are missing. Almost certainly from what sukuna says about yuji later on, he thought or even knew that yuji was going to win this fight which is why we get the iconic smirk and head tilt while mahito is bad mouthing. Like you said; artistic choice. I’d elaborate further cuz I feel pretty confident but this is already long.

The DE was so fast Sukuna didn’t have time to react (which is how I initially read the scene since he doesn’t move during this interaction as if he’s frozen in time) or b.) He let it slide because “Game recognize game”. There’s also the third option I’ve seen people posit which is that Sukuna just knew Mahito was going to get whupped by Yuji and just let it go, but I don’t think that’s as feasible since Sukuna literally takes every opportunity possible to diss Yuji and say how weak and ineffective he is. I don’t think he thought Yuji could deal with Mahito and even if he did I don’t think that would affect his decision making.

Third option is unlikely because that would suggest that Sukuna had any faith in Yuji to win that fight, and we all know that Sukuna is one of Yuji’s biggest haters. Nobara cost mahito close to over half his soul's output and todo then had to come in and play defense and set up plays for yuji to continue the assault. Sukuna has time and time again shown that he doesn't find individuals interesting, nor competent in those who rely on friends. That's his whole shtick. Mahito was showing a crazy play with the 0.2 domain, and Sukuna recognized his talent when he saw it. I'm blown away that you think Sukuna was putting his chips on yuji winning that fight when yuji already disappointed sukuna by losing to Choso, which he stated by the way. The author has also stated that yuji straight up dies in that fight if it wasn't for Todo's final "Clap."

I'd say Sukuna was surprisingly pleased by Mahito's growth and potential as well as his talent, much the same way he was intrigued by Megumi's potential. I doubt he'd let Yuji kick the bucket easily because of how much power is in him now, it's an investment he wouldn't be quick to discard despite what happens later in the manga.

I think it's really cool to compare this moment to Jogo Vs Sukuna, because in a similar situation where a domain either leads to death or immediate success, Jogo refuses to use it while Mahito goes straight for it. If Jogo during his confrontation with Sukuna had tried and succeeded a 0.2 second domain, Jogo could've landed his hit on Sukuna without retribution, but he decided to play it safe instead and died for it. It really kind of goes back to what Gojo said to Megumi in Season 1, characters like Mahito and Yuji will always swing for the fences and characters that go for a safe bunt like Jogo and Megumi will always sacrifice themselves for the team, and unfortunately the people who played it safe usually don't develop past their limits.

What I believe is that (correct me if I'm wrong) when Gojo and Mahito opened 0.2 seconds domain, they weren't spending 0.2 seconds in the domain but rather opening the domain and pausing it around the 0.2 secs mark. That is why Gojo's domain didn't have a barrier and why Mahito could pass Sukuna without a problem cause it just wasn't powerful enough for Sukuna to care.

I think that at this point sukuna just already knew that mahito was going to be a crucial piece for kenjaku to start the Culling Game, wich he would then get advantage of the chaos it should create and steal the body of Megumi. That makes even more as Uraume, who seems to follow Sukuna very proudly, helps Kenjaku too.

I just think sukuna didn't care. In than domain mahito Target was not Yuji but just todo. And he can only physical kill Yuji cause soon as he touch Yuji soul he is dead. And even if mahito physical kill Yuji sukuna can probably bring him back as he did earlier while having just 3 finger.
