Haven’t tuned into Disney Channel in EONS and I’m wondering what exactly they’re doing to stay relevant. As of late, it seems like they’re holding onto nostalgia for dear life with all these reboots like HSMTS and Raven’s Home since their current original shows are just not that popular.

Well, technically, the Mickey Mouse Club and Kids Incorporated were first. But Hilary was one of the first to be the star of her own show and have a record deal with Disney as well. But they didn't nail that formula down until Raven came along and added one more ingredient: doing her own intro song. Even Stevens and Lizzie McGuire had intro songs done by others, but Rae did her own. And, ever since then, every female star has done the intro to their own shows. And, actually, now that I think of it, didn't That's So Raven come out before Hilary got her record deal? This calls for google!! *after a Google search* Ok. So That's So Raven started in January 2003, Hilary's Metamorphosis (her first ACTUAL album) came out August 2003. So 8 months later. And Lizzie McGuire The Movie came out in May 2003. So they were really starting to push it with her and Rae in the same year. They figured it all out in 2003!

That’s true!! Children are learning that they can become famous without a giant studio or production company to assist. All they have to do is make a KZbin video or a TikTok and they have a chance. Obviously, those come with their own set of issues, but it's way easier and more creatively liberal than being signed to an agency that would determine your whole life schedule.

Ofc, idk how big Disney Channel was in the UK, but Disney Channel in the US has been such a cornerstone of children's entertainment, that it'd be weird as all fuck if they got shuttered. A word on why "kids" don't wanna sing about "kiddy" topics: In addition to music changing, consider the fact that kids aren't kids anymore. Children don't have childhoods. The world is so agressive and kids grow up way faster because of family dynamics and the access to adult content and kids don't even relate to innocence anymore. Kids are shaped by the adults around them and children today are under a lot of pressure emotionally and mentally because adults!

I think Nickelodeon has sort of adjusted for the KZbin generation when they signed Jojo Siwa, but unfortunately alot of her fans don't understand that like the Disney stars, she is basically manufactured. Shows that Nickelodeon are good at fooling her fans into thinking that she has alot of creative control over her career(Jojo only gets last say really, I don’t think she sits there and designs her products and when she dose, they probably rarely make the cut), when she really doesn't have that much control over career. But because she turns 18 in a few weeks, her contract will possibly end and I think she could probably be the last sort of "big" thing to come out of Nick...

Imagine being bullied by the media and viewers’ parents because they refused to see you grow up from a made-up character and having your entire career be defined by ONE movie or hit TV show to the extent where other companies and other consumers won’t take you seriously. There’s too much trauma associated with child fame and Disney Channel was a huge catalyst in causing that.

Disney doesn’t care about Disney channel anymore, they haven’t for a long time, u can see that in the horrible quality of the shows and dcoms, so naturally they don’t push their stars anymore. Hilary, Raven, Shia etc, is when they first started out with pushing their stars completely but just the right amount, Hilary being the blueprint for all the Disney stars after her, Raven was already well known before Disney, they just pushed her to new heights but Disney doesn’t have a good record of pushing their black girls like China, Coco etc. The last batch of fully pushed Disney stars were Miley, Selena, Demi, Jonas brothers, zac, Vanessa, cole and Dylan, etc. this is when disney was just cranking out star after star. The next era with Zendaya, Bella, Debby, Ross, China, Bridget etc, they were pushed but not as hard as the stars before them, and even then it was only really Zendaya, Bella, and maybe Bridget that were ever really pushed, they tried to make Debby and Ross something but it didn’t work out, this was when Disney started to not care as much about them. Then the era with Dove, Sabrina, Rowan etc, is when Disney just barley pushed them at all, and now they simply don’t care. Olivia was never pushed by Disney at all, so she technically isn’t a Disney star, she make work with Disney but Disney isn’t backing her.

I also think that the Disney stars back then weren’t afraid to “go there” with their music along with slightly edgier shows which aided in their commercial success whereas nowadays Disney channel musicians are so cheesy and “pg” that no one wants to listen. Olivia was so smart about not signing with Disney, because I doubt she would have had as much creative freedom as she does now and her music would be trash. I also think that the people who were really heavy into Disney during its heyday are all grown up now, which has made Disney as a channel, along with their shows, decrease in popularity.

I know what u mean, there was a bit of an edge to the earlier shows especially with the jokes and the kind of references they were allowed to make. Even Stevens made references to artists like Sisqo and Limp Bizkit, and got away with using the word sexy 3 different times. Louis (Shia's character) once tried and failed to say "voulez-vous coucher avec moi", which is french for "Do you wanna sleep with me tonight?" Lizzie McGuire made references to Eminem and Ja Rule, and the word "Gigolo" was used in an episode of the Proud Family. Gigolo is not a kid-friendly word so to hear that in an early 00s Disney Channel show had me shook

Most kids these days don't watch or care for disney because they have youtube, tiktok, netflix etc. So that's a huge reason why Disney doesn't have any recent stars. I knew Disney was going downhill when they had Jake paul on there.

y'all forgot about Myra. She was the first artist ever to be signed by Hollywood Records, and latina! Miley and Hilary actually reached out to her and thanked her for paving the way. Hilary also met her before Metamorphosis was released. Myra was the OG!

I KNOW I still have my Metamorphosis album lying around somewhere. The power that album has: “So Yesterday,” “Come Clean,” “Inner Strength,” “Why Not?” I also think they dropped the ball with Coco. They didn’t know how to produce her without sexualizing her. Coco would write songs and they rejected almost everything she did.

The Walt Disney Company doesn’t prioritise this model anymore they get their foot in in other ways Beyoncé’s Lion King The Gift and the Black Panther Album. With the rise of Olivia Rodrigo they may return to that model of manufacturing stars because when they find a cow they gonna milk it.

@@spotlightspanther I think it was the success of The Mickey Mouse Club- with Britney, Christina, Justin and Ryan G as their big stars, they skyrocketed to stardom having no more affiliations with Disney but finding their own record labels and crafting the teen idol handbook with polished looks, elaborately choreographed routines and inoffensive lyrics then maturing their sound with a raunchier image to match. They changed how the music landscape should look, with the Disney stars of 2000s and early 2010s- Lindsay, Hilary, Miley, Selena, Demi-taking it new levels of edginess that at first, it is seen as "wearing out the shock value for all its worth" but at a later time, celebrated as liberation for abandoning the squeaky clean image their forced into at a young age (With Hilary as an exception for she never used her sex appeal to sell records and Lindsay was labelled was the ultimate Hollywood trainwreck, which is very unkind) They were teenagers, they're bound to be curious about the adult world but Disney is super strict about the content they can be exposed to or show as their target demographic is consistent of 8 year olds.

Also Nickelodeon stars too. Looking back, the Victorious cast was probably the most interesting and the most talented out of them all. Ariana Grande is a generational talent, Liz gillies is a wonderful actress, Leon Thomas has Grammys under his belt and is a phenomenal producer, I can go on. There hasn’t been a cast since then with that kind of... just talent.

I think being a kid in the 2000s and then a teen in the 2010s will always be superior. We had super fun shows as the most popular media when we were young and then more mature content as teens. I think now it’s much easier to be introduced to dark shit when you’re too young
