People can and do survive 30-40 bar, while working. Look up saturation diving. The record is at 701 meters. This equals 70 bar.
@windhelmguard52953 жыл бұрын
what i was able to deduce from what i have seen here is that the main weakness of the watch is the air inside because, since gases can be compressed, the outer pressure can crush the watch and either bend the back panel inwards to disrupt the mechanism or crack the glass in the front. thus i hypothesise that a watch that filled in with a liquid, which can not be compressed, would hold up against the water pressure much better as the liquid inside the watch would support the structure from the inside. thus i suggest your watch maker try to make watch filled with a hydrophobic liquid like mineral oil or if that's too sticky maybe something with low viscosity like diesel fuel or kerosin?
@bornabosnjak8103 жыл бұрын
Great observation, and quite true! There are several oil-filled watches by the likes of Bell and Ross Hydromax and Sinn UX that are rated for extreme depths (e.g. the Sinn's movement is rated for 500 bar, the case for 1200 bar).

Great video. I always suspected a screwed in crown didn't add any water resistance. Stops it being pulled out by mistake and helps protect it from knocks but water pressure will keep it tightly in place under deep water. I wonder if it is feasible to design a watch that is filled with a low viscosity liquid that won't compress. The movement would have to be designed specifically for the higher viscosity of the fluid, in order to function correctly. A digital watch filled with liquid does not have that problem,of course. Explosion proof pressure gauges are often filled with liquid. It would be interesting to replace the crystal on the seiko watch and fill it with silicone oil, being careful to eliminate any bubbles, and running the experiment again to see what pressures can be resisted.The movement doesn't need to be functional to do that. I did a search and found that the Ressence Type 3 watch is liquid filled and that some top dive watches are also liquid filled.

You can on quartz watches, if you fill up a mechanical watch it won’t run as fast as it should and lose it’s precision.
@paulg33363 жыл бұрын
@@MrTchou That is just a matter of design. There is no reason a designer cannot design a mechanical movement that will work perfectly well in a high viscosity environment i.e. filled with liquid.
