I love what you said about pointe shoes not being so important. For recreational adult ballet students, I think it's vital to emphasize having good strong feet, and developing a sense of grounding and awareness of how your feet work to support and move your body in space. I love seeing my dancers develop supple, dexterous feet; and I think jumping into pointe shoes too soon hampers that. I believe that the strength and flexibility we develop working in ballet slippers does a lot for our overall physical well-being as we age. Having healthy, strong, flexible, arthritis-free feet, past our 60s, makes such a huge difference in our ability to stay active and vital into elder years.
