Modern commercial aircraft are equipped with hydraulic retractable landing gears. On most commercial aircraft, the main landing gear is retracted rearwards or sideways while the nose gear is retracted forward into the fuselage. Why is this? Let’s find out in today's video…

As an engineer, the forward retraction makes perfect sense for all of the reasons you so very well described in this video. We were actually talking about that on Friday when we were at the airport waiting for our flight and enjoying the take offs and landings of various plane models.

I lost the #1 HYD System on a 747 going into JFK a few years ago. We had to manually drop the gear. It all worked out fine, but we had to get towed off the runway because we also lost nose wheel steering.

Perhaps an oddball, but the British Trident tri-jet airliner had a nosewheel that retracted sideways! It was also located to the left of the centre line - not exactly sure why, but it was something to do with available space becoming the driving design factor.

iirc, the Trident had a large avionics bay under the cockpit, which meant that a conventional nose gear wouldn't fit.

It was indeed to do with space requirements! The electrical system was was all controlled from the nose in a bay in front (as I recall) of the NLG from large panels. The kit bolted to these panels was quite large and cumbersome with miles of cable coming off them. Also, the flight engineers panel was on the stbd. side of the cockpit with a mass of cables going through the floor directly below it which likely influenced the nose gear design.

@@able_archer01 I've now seen that also - thanks. The article I read said the large avionics bay was required for the bulky autoland systems for which the Trident was an early pioneer.

Now make a video on why they shifted from the main gear bogeys slanting rearwards to them slanting forwards which is good for air resistance but doesn't make for smooth a landing as older gear design did like in B747 where a rearward slanting landing gear bogey made a smooth touchdown on the runway.

Where do you see that shift? The A350-900 is the only one that does that. 787, 777, A330 all slant rearwards and and A350-1000 doesn’t slant at all

@@MrSchwabentier The B767 , A310, A380, A340-500/600 has both, in the past TU-134 and TU-154 have also used it.

The Russian designed planes nose wheel retracts to the aft for another reason as well. The forward space is utilized for the pilots to dispose of their empty vodka bottles while enroute😉

It is as been thought and studied before it when for good on any airplanes. Engineering made their studies before it was a proove.
