Why do Architects wear Black : with Mariana from Zaha Hadid Architects

Do architects really wear too much black in their daily lives? I’m sure that’s not true. Is it? And if it is why just black? Is it a fashion thing or is there a deep routed unconscious behavior that all designers pick up? Well I am trying to find the answers, and you are coming on this journey with me.

I think it has to do in part with modernism and simple and sleek design which architects adopt in their clothing. Also other people ,,dress up,, their bodies, but architects ,,dress up,, their buildings, so in a way they may want to divert the attention from themselves to their projects.

This is so crazy because I wear black every day and I am a advertising creative and architectural designer. Everyone in the ad business also wears black. I think it’s the color of Creatives. I also heard some thing about there was this movement of Creatives that only wore black. I love black and started wearing it unconsciously. Had no idea it was a trend until I already started doing it LOL

We use to use black drawing pens that tend to stain cloths ,and black commands respect and easily transfers from day to night time, boardroom to building site.

I'm a 3rd year Architecture student at NITH and I already have 2 pairs of black polo shirts, 4 black trousers, a couple of black formal shirts and 2 black suits and I also didn't notice, figure out to be precise, that all my footwear are black too. I didn't think about the earlier but this seem to coming subconsciously to existence and it's cool.

It's an interesting question and I think my answer to it has changed over time. I was wearing almost exclusively black even before I started architecture school so I don't think that was the initial influence. At that time it was more of a fashion choice that reflected the music and alternative culture I was into and I would probably tell you as much if you had asked me then. Nowadays it is more of a functional choice as I don't need to think too much about matching different colours and accessories and makeup etc. Decision fatigue is a real thing so black is my comfort colour in that sense. Black is also associated with mystery, authority, elegance as well as eccentricity and "edginess", for lack of a better word, and it is portrayed as such in pop culture that a lot of us have grown up with. So I wouldn't be surprised if on a subconscious level a lot of architects want to adhere to these qualities by choosing black. Who knows.

I am wearing black rn! The other reason to wearing black is because it does not highlight shadows. It looks clean and lean. In black one doesn't cares about how their dresses folds and what shadows or bumps are highlighted. A reason for me choosing black outfits over lighter ones.

I'm wearing black now, actually I wear it everyday for the last 12 years. It takes less space in my head thinking what to wear, I want people to focus on my face and my expressions to make the communication more honest and clear, moreover black is suitable for formal or informal situations. despite all of that, wearing black everyday makes the laundary easier because there is only black cloths to wash.

I'm an interior designer and I've came to realised that I started wearing black more often than before I came into this field. I think it's safe and comfortable and tough. my favourite colour is pink but I think black has became my go-to colour now

Its true. It is not about the color as much as it is about not having to choose every day - it takes time and energy choosing clothes, and we really don't want to spend that time on trivial things. I used to wear only black and white (white shirt and black pants) when I was on a 9 to 5 schedule. I don't do that anymore now that my schedule is flexible. For me it was for functional reasons.

I’m an architecture student and I already wear black every time I go out.. well there are several reasons why .. I feel like black is a very interesting color it’s very mysterious.. it can go with anything any shoes and any accessory .. and the best thing I like about it is the contrast.. everything pops up once you put it on a black background.. as was mentioned in the video it almost frames the object.. so I like to wear black jeans and tshirt and then wear a colorful shoes or jacket or accessory.. even gold one which are my favorite cause it shows class.. and they will pop up!!

I personally think that creativity is subjective, creatives tend to showcase themselves as their art. Also, it’s less distracting to your thoughts. When you are thinking and taking decisions often which involves textures, colors, etc… you don’t want your clients to get distracted from your outfits because what if they pick something from your outfit!

This was such a fascinating video - so glad I clicked on it! I tend to wear more colour than black in India. When I was studying in Europe, I realized that I dressed more in black because that's how I saw the people around me dress. Even a short duration like a semester exchange programme led me to repeat the blacks in my closet. Perhaps I subconsciously pick up on the colours around me. "When in Rome!"

This is true, when i was younger like before college. My mom used to buy clothes for me. But after entering college, i had to buy them for myself and when you are an architecture student you don't have much time to dress up so black was an easier choice for me. So it developed into a habit unconsciously And now also i prefer black or neutral colors. Also, i don't like prints and bright colors. I don't like when i attract too much attention. I like to blend in the environment or just not stand out much. So i hate the functions where i have to wear traditional clothing. 😅

I realized I do wear black often, as often as always, although I have no conscious reason as such, but when I think about it, it's safe, versatile and doesn't give away much, so a sense of mystery is conveyed, but all of this is very very subjective and subconscious. Also, I love black.

Im an Architect and Black has always been my favorite since I was a kid.. Most of my wardrobe is black. 90% of it. And others would be grey or white or dark blues. Even my home mostly has black on it. White walls, white ceiling, but black furniture, appliances.. Even my car is Black. I just love Black. I guess it’s because Black is very neutral & you don’t have to worry about getting dirty. Compared to White.. Black is also a symbol of elegance. And for clothes, it does highlight your facial/body features.. and it’s very easy to pair with anything. In my line of work, sometimes you go to 3 different places in a day. Office, Client, Site. During those days, you’re all set to go. And even after work, there are times you needed to go out, have some drinks or dinner date with someone, you can just go straight away without the need to change outfit. As long as you still smell good. 😅

I heard, that hair dressers like to wear black, becaus it leads the focus to the cut and it just has them a better understanding, whether they do things right also, I think, as an architect You have so much in Your head, that You want to look put together and like You have control over everything and got everything in check, but there is not the nerves for thinking about it too much I did study architecture and I do wear a lot of black ... and architects also wear thick edgy black large frames for their glasses;)

Handling the statement that black is super functional as a fact baffles me a bit. Colours as well as non-colours do not automatically match with itself or produce a desirable picture, do they? Imagine yellow top and yellow bottom. Or blue top and blue bottom. There surely are some deeper principles of design, that apply wearing all black. Exept from that, I think the reasons for architects going all black are multifarious and often super blended, lots of them were already mentioned in this cool video. I think the present style is rooted in all of these different truths. I would like to add the idea of elegance aka sanctity of black that could arise from priestly robes. Think of the standing collars too, lol

Since last 6 years i had quit wearing denims and switched to chinos and that too Only black, later on after 3-4 years i cen tried change it with some other color or try denims, but that felt disgusting and i went back to my comfy black chinos only. After taking decisions on all those color combinations all the time my eyes as an architect try to get away from those colors, usual color left out due to this would be black, you don't see it in much design except as a border or some small element. So the white and grey also get used in designs but not black. So architects, whenever they have the choice, they use black be it in clothing, presentations, or trivial color choices.

Im an architectural designer. I wear black topi, shirt, pants shoe even watch with black straps 😂😂 it's looks amazing and highlight your face or particular thing which you want to highlight. Even if you create simple square shape white ceiling just give it 2" black boarder in minus this will highlight your ceiling better. Even you can take floor reference white satvariyo stone with black 4" square Boarder near corners. If you wear black shirt it's highlights your face even if you have brown colour skin.

In my opinion, black is a mysterious colour, just like the space is. It makes the person thinking, wondering, and focusing on your speech. Black changed my view about the world. I wish you were wearing black in the vid itself! I have been wearing black my whole short life. Before I knew I am gonna be an architect and more so after I got into architecture. I would say it's easy to pull off, black lets me stand out instead of being too loud itself and everyonr look bomb in black. That's all there that is to it. Black is easy to style, you don't have to worry about combination, less thinking time required. It's amazing.

I am also an architectural designer who loves wearing black. It slims down my overweight figure. It is practical, multi functional, and inexpensive to arm your closet. Actually, when wearing black, it doesn't leave shadows in the private area. Try noticing that. I noticed it when watching the weather men on TV.

Another possible explanation is that they tend to look at everything as a designer and as they don't want to invest time thinking about it they prefer to wear something simple and neutral but sleek instead of risking a "madiocre design".

I thought it was because it looks scholarly (remember, when professors wore black robes). Judges, and priests, still wear black robes. "Architect" is sometimes used to mean "mastermind". In Victorian England, architecture was a gentleman's profession (gentlemen/women were the trust fund babies of the era)
