Reply to add: I got to the section about being disabled and creating art. Oh fucking boy. I have a disability that impacts the joints in my hands (my entire body too but in this situation we're focusing on the hands). Prolonged usage of my hands in any fashion leads to pain. It's hard. It makes art hard. Does that excuse AI art? Absolutely fucking not. You're right: the notion that disabled people need AI art as a crutch is bullshit. There are alternative tools to make things easier for folks like me without stealing from other artists. Disabled people shouldnt be talking points to excuse art theft, jfc.

This was a painful video to watch; but I'm glad you made it; Oliver. As an artist (not even a popular one; or one that puts out any kind of products atm) it is incredibly soul-crushing to see artists thrown under the bus time and time again. But it's good to know that most of us have each others backs. The art community may be a mess sometimes; but art is something that connects us haha.

I remember the first time my art got stolen by a bot account on Instagram. It felt absolutely horrible. Even though the bot did put my tag in the caption, it still felt just wrong. I was (and still am) a very small art creator on insta, and seeing that post get so many more likes and comments than my own(my own like ratio did not increase because of this post), just felt so discouraging. Even if they gave credit, I still didn’t give permission, and even when I asked them to take it down, they refused. When I went to Instagram, they told me I had to copyright my art. When I searched how to copyright I found out, it takes $200 per copyright. It’s disgusting. Artists are being underhanded by these ai’s. And this is no less than just tracing. In some ai creations you can SEE the watermarks the ai tried to recreate. It’s completely and utterly not okay.

i have aphantasia and i certainly struggle with coming up with concepts, but that had never held me back from creating art. My knowledge of anatomy and the such, while not being something i can actually imagine the appearance of, is still present! For me its sorta just like "i know what this should look like, i cant picture it, but i understand how it works and looks". Even the places where it holds me back can be overcome, as learning better colour theory, anatomy, and composition in turn helps to create more unique, interesting works!

ik nobody will ever see this, but i needed somewhere to say it. this entire situation has been so disheartening. knowing that what i pour time and effort into can be beat by a computer in mere seconds breaks my heart and really makes me question if it’s worth it anymore. i’m pretty below average in everything, so art is the only thing i feel like i have, one of the only things i was ever proud of. i haven’t drawn anything in weeks. everything i’ve made feels inferior compared to the ai, and nobody cares for my work. i’ve lost any motivation i’ve ever had in art, and i’ve felt like giving up is the only thing i can do now.

You aren't alone, I've been feeling the same way. I relate to basically everything you've described. I poured years into developing my skills in art, and it feel like it was all for nothing... Don't beat yourself up for it. AI art should not exist in the first place because it is built off of stolen art. You didn't make any mistakes. I just started drawing again, and the reason is because I really do love the process of creating art. AI might be able to produce an image in seconds, but it most likely won't ever be able to make exactly what your vision is, and it definitely won't be as nearly enjoyable as creating your own art. You can think of it like knitting. Most knitted stuff is already mass produced, and it's pretty hard to actually make money off of knitting because of this. But people still do it because the process is the most enjoyable part. Any pain you feel about AI is completely valid, take care.

I felt the same way a while back and I almost stopped drawing because of it. It was before AI got big. I kept comparing myself to artists who had much more practice than I had. I can't be consistent with my art because I have hand problems. But I didn't stop. Because if I didn't have art then I would have nothing and I realized how much art meant to me. Sure I have other hobbies but art is a part of me. If you feel the same way then please continue to draw.

1:23:24 I went to an art camp a few years back (so this was before nfts and ai art was even a thought) and while on a Field trip to an art Meuseum, one of the people working there told us that we could never get anywhere doing art work and that we should just give up while we were still young enough to get an actual job. It was at that point that one of the people who worked at the camp cut her off and told us that we could still live a good life and be an artist but by then we were all in shock. I can’t imagine what they’re telling those kids that go on that field trip now but I really hope the people that work there are still encouraging children to go into art and to pursue it if they’re passionate about it.

Being in an art college at this time is wild bc everyone at my school seems to be scared of ai, to the point where our student advisors and counselors have been getting more "im thinking of dropping out" conversations by the dozen. Of course I had my doubts (esp the day I talked myself into thinking I was safe bc im primarily an animator,, then I saw an ai animation on my instagram feed the same day) Though i have the tenacity and audacity to last me a full life time of never giving up, i mean i recently convinced myself I can make pants and i did. And i love the art community for how we can support each other, im glad to see us having each other's backs here in most cases.

My partner and I are both artists (me as a hobby, him with a degree even) and we both agree that AI went to the dogs really quick. In concept, AI trained on photos could be useful for figuring out layout, shapes, landscapes. My example is figuring out what a specific shape of cloud would look like - like an animal. But instead it's been used for stealing art, massacring it and commodifying it the totally wrong way. And it's humiliating for human artists and devastating. AI bros not understanding that art comes from people!! Is so ridiculous!! I think making art is such a big part of being human for a lot of people. And it's sad to think that people use AI to ruin people's livelihood.

I have aphantasia and I can assure you I have never needed anything to help me draw. I just naturally draw in a different way than people who can visualize things. I didn't even know seeing things in your head was a thing until 2019! I've been an artist my whole life lol. Love the video! It really hits a lot of the points that need to be talked about. I have been researching a lot on this topic and came to the conclusion that this is about controlling the creative industry. If AI writes, creates art, creates its own prompts, and programs its own programs, why need people to do any of it? Then you lock creativity behind a giant pay wall. It currently looks like the AI bros are being used by companies like stability to run R&D. If you keep up with things like WotC, who just pulled their open license, you can see where this might go. Get millions of people to test the generators, type the prompts, create the codes etc., then have them forfeit any and all data. I'm pretty sure if you use these generators they own your data anyway, (check the licenses) but imagine what that would do. I hope this AI stuff gets under control sooner than later.

57:12 I have hypophantasia. This means my ability to visualise things is incredibly limited to that of a person. It's either barebones or looks bad AI image in my mind. This is why I picked up drawing, to turn my abstract ideas into actually concret things. I honestly find it insulting that AI art bros would use people like me as an example, while they're probably better at visualising than I am. Also it's not a tragedy that I think in concepts. Am I frustrated that my friends have frillier designs when I couldn't ever concoct such a thing? Yes, but this means that they're more "animation friendly", like a friend says. I'd rather draw and change things during the art process than pull the lever on the AI image generating slot machine, hoping it would look remotely similar

First of all, I just need to say that that drapery is on point. Loooove the layers and detailing! You remind me that I need to study drapery more XD When I read comments or listen to these A.I. bros, one of the first comments out of their mouths is almost always "Artists don't understand what these A.I. generators do!" I've actually spent a fair amount of time trying to understand precisely how these shitty bots work, and the more I find out, the more obvious it becomes that they aren't sentient, they aren't "thinking", they don't create anything new, and yes, had human artists' works not been part of their datasets, *they would not have been able to produce anything that looks like our work.* Funny how simple that is, and how strongly these "enthusiasts" seem to think it's not a part of the equation. It's tragically comedic to me, and woefully apparent, that these A.I. bros understand jack shit about art, about how most contemporary art is produced, or what it actually takes to get good at it. I see people commenting "But I spent almost two hours on it!" and the only thing I can think of is when I spend ten times as much, hardly really considering it because sometimes, it just takes that long (or longer) to finish something you can be proud of. It's so obvious that they don't care at all about making art. They just care about turning it into some sort of money-grabbing scheme. They have absolutely zero care for what they *could* make, if they wanted to; instead they whine about artists being "gatekeepers". Give me a break and pick up your own damn pencil.

AI art makes me want to tear my own hair out and scream at the ocean for 3 hours straight (or until i lose my voice, whichever happens first), thank you for making this video Oliver, i am an artist myself and i wont lie, i have considered just, no longer sharing my art online and only sharing it with close friends i trust instead and,,,, isn't that just heartbreaking?? that that thought even had to cross my mind? and the minds of so many other artists too. I create, I draw I write I sculpt with clay, occasionally I even paint or dabble in the textile arts. I do this because I cannot live without it. but you also create so that you can share it with people, even if thats just one person cuz its a highly specific au that only you and your close good friend have any interest in, you still make it cuz you want someone else to see it too and enjoy it. AI arent just stealing our art, theyre making us afraid to share it with others, threatening to kill our communities and thats the biggest punch to the gut Also, as a side note to your point about the "counter argument" of 'what if you want to express yourself but you cant draw?' i fully agree with both points you made. either learn to draw or express yourself some other way, but also, another way to still get that idea out there in the world in the form of a drawing?? --and i know this is about to blow the minds of all AI bros out there-- is to, yknow, commission (yes, that means pay), an artist to draw it for you. wild concept, i know. Anyways, sorry for semi-ranting in your comments section, this topic just gets me very On Edge as it were,,,, so let me finish off with a positive statement: I love your art Oliver, and id recognise your style anywhere, cuz its you, and i hope you'll keep creating for as long as your heart desires

I’m an artist, granted I only got five years under my belt, and I may not be the best, but I still love to draw things of my favorite characters from my favorite shows. I love to look at what others can do and just be amazed and think “someone poured hours of their heart and soul into this. One day with practice you can be just as good too” I want to be a concept artist some day, but AI art has been making me give up on that dream. What has taken me years to get to where I am and what will take me years more to get to a professional level, only took an AI a few minutes to produce hundreds of things after stealing millions of people’s beautiful and expressive art. I genuinely teared up while watching this video, knowing that this could be the end of so many people’s passion to create, express, and grow. AI will kill creativity in a world where we are discouraged to create. I am already told enough by everyone that the animation industry is tough, I should settle for a different and more reliable career, I should consider military over anything because I am guaranteed money that way. I already know all those things, and AI art is going to make mine and everyone else’s struggles even more apparent and kill so many more hopes to pursue something that makes them happy. Some people say that we should be excited about AI art… but I just can’t be excited about something that was made by a machine without taking the time, the effort, the mistakes, the triumphs, the failures, the art blocks, the drawing at 3 am, the years of progress, because without that there is no humanity to a piece of art. And I believe art is the most human thing in the world, we should not have to give up our humanity.

I don't think so. AI will also take over other jobs, in the next 20 years for example, people predict that it'll be used in the medical field, and it's already being used in labour and construction. It's senseless to worry about it, because like, we can't really stop it. Innovation also always comes with people losing their jobs. Before plumbing for example, people used get their water delivered to them. Those people are now extinct. A more recent example is how Netflix and similar companies basically destroyed the DVD industry.

Just wanted to say that this video is amazing. But I wanted to add more to the aphantasia and ableism. So I follow and know artist who have disabilities that make it harder to picture and draw. A few you tubers are Jamierightmeow (Nonbinary artist who uses they/them) Hello Alice, and Sugar n Blu(black artist) all of them make very creative and beautiful works of art and Jamie with the HelloAlice featuring, made a video explaining how they still manage to make art despite their disabilities and how that disabilities affects them. Then theirs Katzun (nonbinary trans men he/they and goes by Michael) while they don’t have aphantasia they do have face blindness which makes it’s harder for them to remember peoples faces. They made a video explaining how their condition works and also point out how ableist it is to assume how people with these disabilities are incapable to make art. Heck not everybody uses their imagination when it comes to making art. You know how your not thinking just doodling? Similar concept. I as an artist who doesn’t have aphantasia don’t always imagine our plan out my drawings. Sometimes I’m just mindlessly draw something, liked how it looked and decide to make it a finished piece, so if I can make art like that why do some people think it’s impossible for people with aphantasia or face blindness to do the same thing? Other than ableism there people don’t have a concise answer. But if you want to know more the artist that I mentioned have made videos going into more detail about there disabilities and it’s very knowledgeable so I recommend people to check them out. Great video Oliver.

I very much dislike AI art since I still am a very small artist and really wanting to grow to the point where I am able to sell stickers and prints of my own OC's and other drawings like Oliver but the rise of AI art has been making me feel down that this goal of mine could maybe one day not be possible but seeing so many people fight for the rights for our art and having the ability to actually have their art taken out of AI databases gives me hope again and more motivation to grow my art this year and going forth. Hearing the voice at the end try and say my username was so funny also 🤣

I’ve already heard people around me calling themselves artists now because of AI art. Mind boggling people could claim such things because I wouldn’t dream of calling myself a chef if I only knew how to microwave a tv dinner. I’ve heard some people say that artists do art for the love of it not solely for money. I guess all professions should give out free services and not because they have to survive. It’s beyond hilarious and infuriating when people using ai want to profit but god forbid the artists that spent years want to actually make a living?

Oh wow, i cant wait to watch this video!I think one of the things that annoys me about ai art is that it takes away the 'human' part of art. Any emotions or messages incorporated into the art are completely removed, making the art soulless. I couldnt imagine a world where thats our only art, lifeless renditions of the same thing over and over again. And thats not limited to visual art, either. There are many a.i. that have been programmed to tell stories, for example. But these stories will never be as nuanced and beautiful as human-made ones, stories with reasons behind their creation and, like i said above, messages and emotions that the writer wants to teach the reader about. Art is about learning new things, seeing the world from a different point of view. If all art and stories were replaced with a.i. generated ones, we would lose all of that meaning. Art would be meaningless. At the very least, I don't think we're at risk of totally losing art of any medium, at least not right now. Just look at places like etsy-sure, you could buy mass-produced plushes, jewelry, etc from your nearest walmart, but theres something special about art that was handcrafted by a person instead of a machine. There's so many problems with a.i. art, and I'm sure you covered a lot of them in this video, but that's my two cents on the whole deal. Art is a pathway to another world, another point of view. It conveys the feelings and situations we have experienced to the viewer. There's a very human connection. Even if it's fanart, even if the message is just "i really love this character, and want to show that in this carefully created art piece!" we can feel that. That's what I think makes art so special.

i like the chef metaphor for this whole thingy. An Ai "chef" artist, opens a restaurant, but instead of making the food he goes to the neighbouring restaurant and orders different variations of the food he wants to sell. He might change it as much, to the point that the original actual chef says something like, "wtf thats a different dish, why not make your own then". He gets his food and sells it. The Ai"Chef" artist still didnt make the food, because he doesnt fucking know how to heat a pan up. The actual chef, still cut the ingredients, heat the pan, put it in there, and seasoned and whatnot. That whole thing still ignores that the Chef at least got paid to butcher his dish, while artist are getting bullied. Also the resold dish is a worse version, because the original had finetuned ingredients and preperations, while the new one mushed some stuff into it, that shouldnt be there. EDIT: im white af but i got kinda bored on working on white characters, so i started into a deepdive of how different ethicities/countrypeople look and how to draw it. I was always scared that im doing some sort of cultural appropriation, or doing everything horribly wrong anatomy and culture wise, but i always felt like there is a demand for it, so hearing this ai stuff with the highkey racism going on, kinda made me a little bit more confident EDIT: The food metaphor could also work with frozen food. You go into the supermarket to look for frozen pizza and choose 1 of the options. Choosing from options presented to you is way way easier that to actually create these options and you are still not a cook in any way.

This is great. This is really great. Thank you for making this. I'm one of those artists who has programmer friends and even one of them was working on an AI art project. AS AN ARTIST. SHE'S ALSO AN ARTIST. I seriously can't believe her. I go into arguments with them quite often. Anyways, thanks to you now I have a video to summarize my concerns and throw at people when someone's pro-ai now. Thank you. Ai really can be a powerful tool, and can be a step further in computer and robotic sciences, but there are too many problems in the system for it to be used publicly. You stated them well. Also I wanted to share a story here, after the one you told about that one ai-"artist" fed the work in progress from the livestream... Years ago, I was watching an artist's livestream. They were making comics and we, the watchers, were fangirl/fanboy'ing in the chat. They stop drawing the comic and out of the blue, draws a really quick sketch of the character, suggestively grinning. It was a fast doodle, and it was there just a second. It was a nice gesture. It turned out someone took the screenshot of it and I asked for it, rendered the sketch just for the fun of it. I told them, posted it on the blog tagging the artist and adding the livestream screenshot too but I was also scared if I offended the artist. I also added I could completely delete everything if they wanted to. (Edit: By rendering, I mean I PAINTED that sketch, with my own art style and skill, no AI or anything. Figured my wording could cause confusion but it's not the case.) They didn't. We just had fun with it. It was a quick art throw at each other. It was nice. So... Two sides of the almost same coin? I don't know, it reminded me of that. Good times. It's depressing to see how things are changing. Come to think of it, this was on tumblr. The picture's probably already fed into one of those machines now. Oh well...

i agree with all of this. I know the intent of this is probably not to make those invested in AI art change there way of thinking. but I have to be honest. No amount of saying the truth will make these people see otherwise. They are ignorant because they will forever be the same people who look at your work and say "i wish I could draw" while never having tried to in the first place. I agree that what your saying is the real truth, but the only way this would ever change some ones mind is if we really dumbed it down for them. 😆 I whole heartedly believe that the AI art community will go down, its got very sketchy (no pun intended) legs to stand on that can only hold its, racist, and child porn making ass up for so long.

He told me that if I didn’t like that I should just make the “smart” decision and stop pursing art as a career. He thinks the majority of artists support AI so I should too. It frustrates me that he never saw it as a moral issue, only an advancement of technology he himself could use to make “art” without putting in effort himself. on the topic of 'boo hoo we can't take all these images AND credit the artists!1!' if these people tried to pull that in an academic setting they'd get expelled from whatever institution they're at. like. if you cannot source an image with at least who, what and when, you can't use that image in your references or journal work. and while I think ai generated images are no different to photobashing (and therefore could have a place in the art industry but not as it currently stands and I don't need to explain why), at least when artists do that they tend to credit their sources. unfortunately another problem is you can't legally enforce anything as it stands now without screwing over many human artists in the process, because copyright law only protects those with deep pockets and, well, what's cheaper? hiring a human who takes days to complete something or putting a prompt into a machine and have it in minutes and doesn't require hourly pay? man I hate ai bros

But I might not even been a artist at all without it, drawing makes me be able to “visualise” my thoughts. I do need more references, but I’ve heard that people lose interest when “they can’t draw what’s in their head”. I have never known and will never know how it is to visualise so i can’t know if that helps me, I still get “art-block” I still get frustrated when it doesn’t look like i want it to. I can’t stand these kinds of people who will blatantly try to discredit someone else’s career and then have the audacity to claim that they’re doing things just as valuable if not more than what the person they’re discrediting is doing when that person they’re discrediting is basically the reason they can do anything to begin with. AI art is not and never will be original. It’s images cannot exist without things to steal from, it’s not inspiration, it is plain and simply theft. I can make up a pose without a reference, AI cannot, I can choose a color scheme myself, AI cannot. The audacity of AI bros to claim that the non-sentient, non-intelligent little algorithms they simp for are more talented than people who the AI need as crutches makes me wanna puke.

@@danielc1175 we didn't steal our references from copyrighted images. we dont copy references pixel by pixel and then its ours. it's insincere at best for you to claim that the human brain is at all similar to the extremely basic levels of copying that AI can do, and just a flat out lie at worst. you can CLAIM "AI will be used to make original images" if you want, but it's incapable of doing so right now, so that's completely irrelevant. i can claim that someday i'll be the best artist in the universe, but i have no proof that's true (just as you have no proof for your claim), and even if it was true, that still wouldn't be a justification for me to steal other people's work. and as long as AI runs rampant off data that is being used without the original artist's consent, all you're doing is stealing. stealing people's work, and stealing people's income.
