Its followers are the percentage of the population who either can't or won’t adapt to the changing conditions of a planet filled with billions of people. We: - Question whether or not he even existed. - Have no reason to think he was a magical person even if he did exist. - Find many of his moral teachings to be unimpressive, such as his failure to denounce slavery, apocalyptic nonsense, views on vicarious redemption, etc.

He didn't like hypocrisy. BTW I did attend the Self Realization Foundation as a young man. They included their version of Jesus into their worship of Krishna. Both being avatars to a higher power. I tried to get into it, but ultimately couldn't make myself believe it either.

This highlights the need for a more nuanced understanding rather than relying on a singular, potentially biased source. I've always loved that question and I've used it for a rebuttal a few times when I debated a theists. He was a kindergarten Christian so it broke his brain as soon as he thought about it for more than a second and defaulted to deflecting.

I’ve been wrestling with this one for some months. The Satan character as presented by christians is far from perfect, but he’s pretty clearly the protagonist in every interaction with god that I’m aware of. But god? As portrayed in the bible? He’s terrible. The morals are terrible, the lessons are terrible. He’s an insecure psychopath, lying constantly, changing rules at a whim, and gaslighting his subjects into thinking he’s the good one. Maybe he tried to get sober and behave better with the Jesus shtick, but old habits die hard and the pity party kept on going. I just don’t get how he’s the good guy, or love, or any of that. Not the god in the book, anyway.

Jesus has nothing to do with Muslims murdering women for not wearing the Hijab, Jesus has nothing to do with the instruction that leaving the religion means you are to be put to death either, that's Mohammad. Freedom would have been a huge shock to the system, and quite likely would have killed him. As with most problematic things in the Harry Potter books, this is a case of Rowling taking a real world mythical thing and popping it in her books without any thought of the morality of the issue.

But I'm gonna call you out on the "defense" that you gave for Harry not freeing Kreacher. There is no reason to not free a slave. In book 5, we had the excuse that Kreacher knew too much about the Order, but the war is over at the end of book 7. Harry is allowed to keep his slave cuz JKR promotes that benevolent masters can keep slaves while mean or cruel masters (Lucius, Crouch Sr.) are frowned upon. JKR is essentially biblical where she doesn't oppose slavery but she encourages benevolent slavery. Which is hugely problematic

This is another caller that I would classify as "incredibly emotionally immature". I honestly think that being heavily indoctrinated at a young age causes developmental problems in these people. I feel like religious indoctrination makes life more difficult for the victims because they end up being adults who cannot grapple with reality on its own terms and end up retreating into emotionally fulfilling fantasy. I fully understand the caller's anger, the same thing happened to me before I stopped believing. Indoctrination is so, so hard to break and I love seeing that breakthrough moment. Some people just can’t fathom the fact that other people don’t have a religion and don’t believe in a god or prophet etc. Some automatically think we worship Satan or are Wiccans etc not grasping the fact that the belief in those is just as preposterous. It’s the supernatural connotations that are associated with these beliefs that we don’t believe in.

I think maybe those who do are a little insecure in their faith and the fact that someone doesn't beleive threatens their insecurity somehow. The peaple I know who are Christian don't give a toss most of their friends are atheists. One friend who is very religious married another Christian who was very much been only in Christian circles. She insisted he had to hang around her atheist friends to get a bit more worldy and see what a great bunch of peaple we heathens are.

Kudos to this lady for coming out of the gate with the most closed-minded stance possible, but actually listening to what they told her and changing her mind. Most people who call and sound way more open minded than she did at first end up refusing to answer what's been asked and repeating the same talking point over and over. "I do have evidence," "but you do have a choice not to go to Hell," "god loves you."

The root of anger is fear. So essentially, she started her conversation being angry because she was afraid and already starting to doubt….because how dare those people on the show put more doubt into her heart. But while discussing it rationally she’s able to come to terms with her doubt and get some of her questions answered which helped her through her fear.

No hate for jeebus at all. I will fight for their right to believe in their religion. BUT, their right to believe ENDS at others right to believe what THEY want. Reading their bible made me an atheist, and for the most part, that is true for a large portion of atheists. Believe what you want, live YOUR life according to YOUR beliefs, but keep YOUR religion OUT of other peoples lives. THAT is all the argument needed.
