Skrillex had a thoughtful gem he shared at the Grammys during his speech : "success is something you attract, not something you chase or try to catch". He said this is the best advice he ever got. I feel this is is something to aspire to and that can be very motivational and inspirational.

What I’ve learned, I don’t want to work with the clients who want to pay budget dj pricing. They don’t value the work, bitch the most, want the most from you, complain the most, and are the least happy

I e been a dj since 2008, and my prices are definitely not that low. I do have the times that I will work with someone’s lower budget, but I also bring in enough to where I can sometimes work with lower budgets. I do agree with you though. The djs that are always doing these lower prices are killing the industry.

Preach, preach, preach! Yes...and it's got me discouraged...I've raised my rates and my bookings are down. I am reputable and coordinators and venues love me with 100% five star reviews on Google as a single op. I got asked recently about a $600 wedding and declined. Out of curiosity I checked back a couple weeks later and she had booked a $600 DJ. It's a hard line to walk and I've got bills to pay. Granted...I don't think I've hit the ceiling...the problem is the price floor is dropping. I do think I'll aim more to the middle as you said. I love your motto. Thanks for bringing this up. Props to you from Statesboro, GA.

I said this last night during the SB to my DJ friends, "Couples want Michelin Star services at Dollar Menu prices. Sure, you'll be satisfied at an instant but it won't leave a lasting impression. Michelin/Fine Dining experiences will last forever. There are people who love shopping off the dollar menu. Do you want to be Chef Gordon Ramsey or an Idiot Sandwich?"

I definitely agree with you on this about all the low-ball budget Dj's out there. We here have been in business for 34-years. In the last couple years, we have a low-ball DJ moved into our area that's only been in business for last few years starting out with wedding prices at $400.00. They'll setup at bridal shows and seems to get all these new weddings they says lol .. Only reason for that is because they are low-ball DJ. This does put hurting on business that's been around for years only for short time because sooner or later things get around to know what kind of DJ person is. My motto is you get what you pay for anything anymore... I love this video I will be sure to share this for you!

I think it is economically healthy for DJs to have a wide variety of price points. I can appreciate lower-end DJ prices because it creates space for market segmentation. A discerning consumer will research the reason why pricing differentiates. In my experience, consumers circle back when they see the quality. Also, space-time management is a valuable science to integrate in a business. There is more value in one gig for $1750 than 5 gigs for $1800. Cheers!

I agree with you 100%. Unfortunately all DJ’s are not created equal. And do to technology almost anyone can DJ especially with AI programs out now. So you need very little equipment and almost no knowledge. That’s what drives the price of our industry down. When I started before technology, DJ’s had more value , cause just anyone wasn’t going to invest the time or money to become a Dj. A good DJ’s vinyl collection cost more than most DJ’s entire setup today. However DJ’s like yourself who don’t show up to the venue with just a laptop have to go above and beyond with social media and websites to attract the clients you want. In my area it’s very difficult to charge your highest price every time. I have different tiers, you get what you pay for. KEEP UP YOUR EXCELLENT WORK !!! PS. Most Dj’s can’t even beat count these days, they use the sync button. So they shouldn’t charge more than $400 anyway. LOL

The problem started when DVS and these controllers came about that is the biggest problem because now everyone can become a DJ.and that is what gives us the most headache with the fluctuation and all these mediocre DJs taking the gigs from true and real DJs those who spent five $10,000 learning how to spend on records spending money going to buy your artist and your music collection this this digital age has f***** everything up for DJ's like myself I grew up in New York now I live in Mid-South it is disgusting I have to get with a wedding planner in order to survive

Definitely a market-to-market thing. For example, the Kentucky DJ network is a pretty tight knit group, and most of us know each other well and we all know who the budget guys are. I seen in a post on a Bridal page yesterday looking for a DJ for October 5th, 2024. The only people not booked yet posting a response were budget DJ's. The large budget guys are all booked. As far as the appearance thing. I think the clients care now more than they did 5 years ago, but I'd be confident in saying planners & venues put more merit in the look than the couple. With that said, improving your look will help you book higher-end clients & can be a "justified reason" to the client who asks why you charge a higher price than most others.

A couple have to realize the DJ is the most important part of their most important day of their lives. We have a DJ in our area that is on Bark, and he still can’t book a wedding because he’s a $600 DJ. He told me couples call him but they don’t book him. He told me their first question is why he’s so so Cheap. He said he only charges for the hours he has to DJ. If it’s only a 5hr reception then his price is only $500. He goes to me I can’t believe you book all your weddings at your price, I told him man you have great gear and couples think there must be something wrong because your price is so cheap.

As an owner of multiple service based businesses I can personally tell you there will always be certain people who only patronize a company based on price. You could be in business 20 years, have 5-stars with a ton of great reviews, testimonials, and references which speaks to the high quality of service yet they will look to marginalize what you bring to the table by mentioning a low price of some off-brand competitor who may not be licensed, insured, and only in business a year or less. I wish this could be stated about only DJ services but unfortunately the Dollar Store exist for a reason 🤣

I used to do "cheaper" weddings and associated gigs. Until I did a school formal which broke me I gave them a great price, had to communicate back and forth via email then go to the venue 3 seperate times for induction, soundtest and wait for "there" forklift operator to lift my $5000 custom dj booth onto the stage. (They refused to have me DJ off stage). No food, no drinks no offering of anything whatesoever, everyone recieved a meal including the photobooth operator, except me. Then had to purchase water bottles from the bar because bar had no running water. Finally got kids dancing after many speeches and boring formalities then teacher instructs me to shut it down due to time restrictions. Finished the gig no thanks from anyone, not even a goodbye. Packed my sh$t up waited for forklift to unload my booth. I will never DJ again cheap for anyone ever again!

All weddings are not the same. I’ve done simple weddings where there were 30 people involved. The ceremony took place in the same small room as the reception. They ate and danced. No big deal. My planning for that wedding was not the same as a wedding where I have to do sound in multiple rooms, 200 guests, many songs for the ceremony, wedding party introductions, full slate of special dances, etc. And I don’t charge the same for both. And in my area that first one could easily be a 3-hour wedding around the $600 rate. When are DJ’s going to realize this is a free market? There will be a variety of prices for similar services and products. That competition drives the prices.

Sometimes you're not a budget DJ, but you have to charge the lower prices because you're new to the DJ industry and you can't charge the professional DJ price. At least you shouldn't charge the professional price, because you're at the beginning stages of your DJ career. Just my opinion.

You decide in which market you want to be. The people who are paying under 800 dollars for dj service for a wedding that has a lot of logistics obviously don’t care much for their event. Think about it those are the people who are paying a couple hundred dollars for video and photography as well. So you can just imagine I honestly won’t take it those events are the most stressful because those clients expect a lot for little pay not worth the headache. STAY in your market there’s people who sale Hondas and people who sale Mercedes.
