I just purchased some tube lights from amazon and I am sold. The ease of set up was definitely a plus. I received a lot of compliments. They are not the brightest but that’s okay…I prefer my dance floor to be more on the dark side. Anyways just my 2¢

I asked the videographers and even photographers that use those lights to only turn them on when they are actually shooting. Not to keep them on permanently. throughout the whole dancing

Just ask the videographer to turn the light on and off when recording! Cause usually the video guy dont stay til the end anyway or you can adjust the amount of lights you set up. Great Topic though!

I dislike those video videographers spot lights too. In the end we are still there for the customers and unfortunately we have to deal with this. If it were me, they would need to turn them off. At best, they can have 20 min at the beginning then they need to turn them off.

I love my videographer friends. But I will say that the energy of the dancing is always less for the events that I can't control the lighting. This is not an exaggeration! I mix lighting just like I mix music! But usually I ask for 20 good minutes of the spotlights off. The best videographers will usually oblige.

My G. I tell them "You get 10 minutes, make em count" as nicely as I can. Kills the vibe on the D floor and honeslty, how much diff dance floor footage can you really get? I pull em aside and respectfully make a compromise about it. If they refuse, I pull the couple aside, briefly explain the situation and see what they say. Most couples say " kill the video light" and were back to getting lit. :D

It's normal up here in Canada to dj 10 hour day. Ceremony 3:00pm. Cocktail hour is no longer an hour sometimes 2 hours. Dinner is around 6 go for 1 hour and a half maybe 2 hours. Dancing for 5-6 hours sometimes. I agree the dancing part is too long. I would rather have the dancing part be 3 hours. But then again we can charge more because we are there longer.

Good video. I'm now to the business, and I utilize information from professionals like yourself to educate myself. I created a contract, but I don't think it covers enough. I pretty much have the basic. Are you willing to give me your top for items you feel should be on every contract? I have my hourly, balance due date, overtime hourly, termination, client duties, etc. What else would you recommend. It would be nice if you even made a video about it. Thanks for the information you provide.

I bring plastic large garbage bags to place over the speaker although the sound quality may be impacted. The customers are more understanding that you are flexible and willing to help continue. Surprisingly in my past experiences the customers want to continue on regardless of the weather however, some may opt to transfer the ceremony inside the venue, but large garbage bags to cover the equipment. Mainly the speaker does come in handy.

I know youre going to get some flack for saying it from videographer and photographers as well so as me being a DJ Videographer and Photographer let me say this as a videographer and photographer: if the couple has hired a photographer and or videographer at a wedding etc they want them to capture the event so they can look back and see it over and over through out the years so us DJs have to stay out of the way of that because they spoke with the videographer and photographer and seen their work and hired them because of how their work looks. now Ive had to ask the DJ to turn off their color lights at certain times or give them spotlight so we can take the photos without colors on the brides dress. the Brides hate that with a passion and will not pick those pictures and have asked me why didnt i ask the DJ to turn them off from my experience. Now as a DJ same thing i will not get in the way of the photographer and videographer thats working because what they are doing is capturing memories of the event and im just DJing witch is at the moment important to the event but it doesnt trump their recorded memories. now personally i dont use those on stand spotlights i use an on camera spot light so i can move around and the way i shoot photography the DJ can keep the lights on. If im djing and its a certain dance my other shooter will know how to shoot and if its an all dj lights on situation or ill turn the lights all white with soundswitch.. but this is what ive learned over the years Djing photographing and videoing events..

I am also a DJ, photographer, and a videographer. My partner is a photographer. My video camera is extremely good in low light and I've only had to use an LED panel 1 time for just the cake cutting because the cake was in a corner with zero light. Other than that I always tell our clients that our video will be exactly what they see captured perfectly. The photography on the other hand, when we do the formal dances I turn off my DJ lights so that there aren't any colored spots on the couple. Brides love our work and I've never had a single complaint about colors on people during open dancing. Sometimes we get booked for wedding where they have already hired a photographer or videographer before they found us. 1 wedding in particular they had a 4 man video crew and a herd or large LED panels on tripods. Being a big believer in being proactive I advised the bride that those panels would ruin a lot of their photos and would take away the natural color in many others. She went to the video team and asked them to cut down to 1 panel for the indoor part of the reception. My dance lights are bright enough that as long as it's not daylight on the dance floor I will give people dancing colors.
