Why do camera manufacturers use the 1/4 20 thread...or the 3/8 16 thread?
Today I quickly talk about why camera manufacturers use the 1/4 20 thread or the 3/8 16 thread and why it's actually a massive benefit to us as photographers.

One thing I found was when I wall mounted my monitors, I started putting my camera on my desk for work calls and stuff, but I didn't like having my switchpod taking up space, so I looked at my old monitor stand, grabbed a ballhead and was looking at how I could mount it on one of the arms. The retaining bolt for the VESA plate on the arm? 1/4 20. So I was able to take off one of the other arms, clamp the stand on my desk, put the arm between my monitors and screwed the ballhead on the end of the arm, perfect desk camera mount.

Sounds like a great desk camera mount and a perfect solution...it's amazing what things you can find that have the same thread!! Thanks for watching. 😁👍

When I’m hunting around modifying my gear it’s had to find a 1/4” BSW screw. You can always use 1/4” UNC (United National Coarse) which is identical & more readily available. 👍😀
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nash, indeed, the 1/4" UNC also fits ... even though the thread angle is ever so slightly different... The BSW has a thread angle of 55 degrees whereas the UNC has a thread angle of 60 degrees, but the wavelength is identical. Really good to know they both fit together though. As always, thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated 😁👍

Nice bit of trivia history for arcane subject, Mike. The standard 1/4 20 let me adapt some rigs with a trip to the hardware store; includes thumbscrews to make things easier, and wood platform w/drilled holes; just have to watch the screw length so as not to damage cams.

Thanks Paul! Indeed, it's good to be able to get hold of them to do some DIY projects! Good point with the length of the screw as well...I had an adapter from sony to canon and when the mount was tightened up too much, the mount stopped working! 🤦🏻‍♂️ 😁👍

I think you should take a stand for the metric system and send me all of your 1/4 20 and 3/8 16 accessories and demand they come out with an 8mm and 10mm equivalent. I can e-mail you my address. I love these informative Monday videos, Mike. Be well.

Is this wobbly at all adapting? I have a nice Bogen/Manfrotto that has the 3/8" male that's too big for my 1/4" female on all my cameras and want to just make the tripod 1/4" permanently. Any ideas on how to do that? Great video and history man! Now put another shrimp on the "BOBBY". TY

How do you remove the smaller head adapter when they just stuck in a larger whole that now needs to go bigger to fit elsewhere haha

One of the few ways the UK keeps a hand in the main stream photography equipment industry. We got screwed years ago.
@mikesphotography

Haha!! Indeed...people think it's a UNC thread...but secretly us brits know it really is the BSW!! 😆

They should remove the screw system completely and have it quick release with a button instead. The screw is not very reliable, especially when handling the camera and on the move. I use an Arca plate with my camera and I constantly have to tighten it because it loosens easily which is super annoying.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography Жыл бұрын
It is annoying when it does that. If you keep the same quick release plate on your camera all the time, it might be worth using some locktight in the thread, this will keep it in place more tightly. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Short answer: First to market. Kodak was the first to hit it big with selling retail cameras. They picked 1/4-20 and that's the end of the story.

At first I was like "for a tripod obviously!?" Hahaha! But if you think that's annoying, try living in a country that hasn't been able to make up its mind for 50 years whether it's metric or imperial! Ô Canada in deed... Ps: reported the naughty spam comments ;)

Growing up in the UK was great. Engine sizes? in litres Beer? Pints Fuel pumps? litres Calculating fuel usage? miles per gallon Speed and distances in car? miles Speed and distances on foot? metres and kilometres Height and weight? feet/inches and stones/pounds, except at the dr, where it's metres and kilgrams Temperature? Celsius. Except when the newspapers want to make a song and dance about a heatwave.

@@stevemulcahy5014 I will admit that's way worse. Every time I go to the UK I forget which unit is used for what.

Haha!! Yep, sounds like the UK and Canada have a lot more in common than just the language!! 😆 We definitely know both metric and imperial systems well, but couldn't distinguish between the two!! It's funny when talking with someone from europe when they ask your weight...and you're talking in stone and pounds!! 😆😆😆 Thanks for watchcing and thanks for reporting the spam comments!! 😁👍
