You really should cover the other side of the story (the anti-independence movement), because you know...neutrality and all that... The title suggests that Catalans "in general" want independence, whereas the reality is very far from being that simple. Given that your goal is to help people learn the language and not to be a mouthpiece for any particular ideology (I hope!), you should be doing a video showing the other viewpoint as well.

They are at a demonstration for catalan independence that's obviously why all the people present want independence. Whatever side you're on, if you watch this video that is evident. This channel has no obligation to show the other side because any intelligent human who knows how to use the internet, like KZbin for example, which you obviously do, you can just look for that other side... and then make up your own mind. Don't demand this channel adapt everything for each individual's tastes. Go out and do the work instead of asking them to do more. They've done enough, and their focus is language so they aren't obliged to offer every side of every story. If it has been a useful way to access and learn the language then it has been a success.

@@monoyamono> They are at a demonstration for catalan independence that's obviously why all the people present want independence. Whatever side you're on, if you watch this video that is evident. >> Agreed. I've never said anything to the contrary. >This channel has no obligation to show the other side because any intelligent human who knows how to use the internet, like KZbin for example, which you obviously do, you can just look for that other side... and then make up your own mind. >> If they want to solely focus on the language, as you say, then I would argue it is in their interest to keep it neutral (and have an implicit obligation to do so). Of course they don't have the explicit journalistic obligation to be neutral. > Don't demand this channel adapt everything for each individual's tastes. >> That is far from what I implored them to do. >Go out and do the work instead of asking them to do more. >> This is not my primary source of news, thank you. What work are you talking about? >They've done enough, and their focus is language so they aren't obliged to offer every side of every story. If it has been a useful way to access and learn the language then it has been a success. >>I'm not going to repeat my comments above, but I would argue it is in the interests of the Catalan language for people to have a balanced picture. I've been in Catalonia multiple times and know many Catalans ("ethnic" Catalans if you will, as well as Catalan speakers) who are anything but pro-independence. Misrepresenting the situation (as has been done in the title) will only present the wrong picture to potential learners.

Interesting to see the other point of view. There are several things I'd like to point: 1) independentism is not an ideology but a strong feeling, you either feel it or you don't. 2) some people are saying their reasons for wanting to become a separate state from Spain and most of the reasons are more than reasonable (a more equal country for the people, better control of our taxes, etc), some of the reasons not so much ( political prisoners who are in jail for doing nothing? It takes a lot of nerve to say that. It's unbelievable how a lot of people are buying that lie. The politicians who are in prison have not only broken the constitution, the have also broken the Catalan Parliament laws and have been repeatedly warned their acts would incurr in crime sentences. I don't blame the people for wanting to vote, I blame politicians for lying to citizens and for promising them something that was unattainable. They are not in jail for their ideas, they are in jail for their acts. 3) Spain is a full democracy ( far from perfect of course) where every Spanish citizen has full rights in regards to everything, there is speech freedom, LGBT marriage, etc, etc. 4) Other languages like Catalan, Galician and Basque are official and protected by the Constitution. People study in those languages at school in those regions where they have their own language, there are TV channels, radio stations, press, books, films etc in those languages. I don't think that happens with regional languages in many Europeran states. Come to think about Italy, France and Germany for instance and regional languages are not so well taken care of and encouraged. 5) The title should be; why does a part of Catalan society want independence? The title implies everyone in Catalonia wants to secede when it isn't the case

That´s simplifying the matter. Catalonia is a region where individual freedom is recognized, and one of the most autonomous regions in the world. Of course, they could have a more autonomous fiscal system, which is the mayor opression issue for independentists. On the other hand, I think very dangerous to take decisions based in the result or a referendum which don´t go over 60%. That would be the case for Catalonia. Yet, the right of selfdetermination should be aplied, but this may cause a larger problem for Catalonia. What if independence is hugely refused by Barcelona and mayor urban areas (what is expected) for example? With which autority would the new state impose their rule over non independentist voters? Wouldn´t it be the sourse for a larger problem of stability within Catalonia? Attending to economic issues, rich regions always claim to be contributing in larger proportion to the state, but they benefit on the free market, free movement and financial statal system more than other regions. An alternative is recognizing Catalonia as a free state within the European Union, but the inclusion of another little state would do the decision making even more difficult in the current european political system, and given the case that independentists don´t want to cede sovereingty, isn´t that a problem for the development of a solid and legitimate political system for Europe? Wouldn´t it be a dangerous precedent for the balcanization of Europe?

Once there was a choice to learn Spanish or Portuguese. I asked many people what language they would choose. There were always an answer Spanish. Than I asked what for? They said it's widly spread. There are Catalans in Spain and also in Southern France. They love their culture and language and identity wich has been severely erased in France, a very centralized state, and under severe repression in Spain, with a bad history with both the monarchy and Francism. But they defended better their rights in the south and don't want to be forever maintained and limited by this status quo where they always always have to fight against Spanish linguistic pressure, against the monarchy and Spanish governement manipulations to limit their potential to express their will as a free society. And I support the Kurdish cause and their fight for their rights too.

He says that Catalans purposely protests whenever they need to achieve political objectives like extracting more money from Madrid. He also told that basque government is very good compared to Catalan government in the sense they negotiate well with Madrid for budget money, level of autonomy and non interference from Madrid government and basque government are financially disciplined and Basque Country is generally more prosperous than other provinces of Spain.

To begin with, the Basques have their own taxation, that is, they collect and then decide to give a share to Spain. In Catalonia it's the other way around, it's the Spanish State that decides what stays and what it invests in. And for two years now the Catalan economy has been completely controlled and audited, giving zero autonomy to invest in what we want. So before making comparisons you should understand them.

Thank you, great topic to cover, I've always wanted to hear what people in the street, not the Catalan politicians, think about it. I personally agree on the claim for independence as a region in general, but this is only 'cause I think that the whole of Europe should function that way: European Union for bigger topics like trade deals, defence and overall governance, but other rights should obviously lie in the hands of the regional governments. With that system implemented, we could get rid of the Nation states, which have never properly functioned, led to great damage for the continent and the world and still maintain a strong, solidaric Union as a whole. When I look at the world and Europe right now though, it seems like to me that the overall populace isn't yet ready for that, so I'd like to encourage the Catalan people to endure this current state as long as we have no real better alternative like a reformed EU in sight! Thank you for reading.:)

Gollum Mullog EU should only be an alliance not a government making rules. All European peoples should have independence, divided among both tribal, cultural, and philosophy differences. For instance if half population wants free market and right to own guns, and other half wants regulation and strict rules, split the land give half to each so both can live the way they want to. European nations would then all form a alliance with all of Europe and new European nations like USA, Canada, Australia. And this alliance is for defense and war only, no EU or UN making rules, just one that focuses on core aging military if the west or our allies are ever attacked. European people do too much for the world and for minorities, it's tome Europeans and westerners start to look after our own. Europe should only care about Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Israel and our allies like Japan, South Korea, etc. the rest of world we should let burn for all I care, only invest your energy in people who share your cultural values and ethics

Spain Is one. And it is a democratic and free country. Even though lot of Catalans say it isn't. I haven't been to Catalunya yet. But I have been to Basque country, Galicia, Andalucia and Madrid. And even though I can spot some differences (specially from north-south) it is still Spain and it will ever be. Catalunya in the past was a political and identity fight. Nowadays they can speak Catalan, they even had an 'embassy' in Brussels. Nowadays it is more than anything an economical fight. Let's face it, was Spain as rich as Germany the Catalans would never want independence in 2019. However I think they need a referendum on independence though, but they should do it by provinces. Like the one that Canada did on Quebec. And one more thing, people saying that Spain is a dictatorship because of the trahison laws clearly know nothing, because Germany, and all other democracies in Europe have similar laws too!! In Germany if you do what the Catalan leaders did you would get jailed and nobody would say nothing. And by the way, Catalunya has a public TV channel (TV3) that is 100% against the Spanish State and that basically preaches independentism 24/7 even if it includes fake news. Needless to say that a TV like this would never be publicly financed by the public in most democratic countries.

These people are lucky that there is a state over their heads. If they suceed to secede, I wish them luck. Personally, I will be laughing very well, thinking of how remarkably la-la land of a political hoax they fell for. And of course, both parts having to pay for this bilateral bankruptcy-sized circus.

"Lucky they have that state over their heads"? Like lucky that the police came out to bash the heads of old women who just wanted the right to peacefully vote and have their voice heard, right? I wonder how you'd feel if someone in a uniform of that state pushed YOUR grandma down the stairs. Maybe then would be a good time to see how "lucky" you think they are...

How many countries have their national day being an "independance day ?" So on what ground what others obtained should be denied to them specifically ?

Oh, please. You American people have no feelings nor common sense; we're having now a really bad situation here, in Spain, and you, an American lenguage learning chanel, make a video about Catalonia's independence. Did you know this is a very tough political, social and national situation? Many people have died because of this. This is very sad for Spain. You don't care about us: the (following your criteria) stupid Spain. You should just make videos about language learning, not political conflicts. 😠😠😠🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸
