It could be a comfort thing, since as kittens most cats would've heard their moms and siblings purr around them while they nurse. Though, it can still be a pain relief, for two reasons: a) you don't know if she's ever hurt herself, even little things like ripping a nail while scratching the post or stretching would be pain, similar to cutting your nail too short & bothering the nerve endings under the nail, and b) purring is a natural instinct for cats, so even if they have never had the reason

Luke DS From what I gathered, the idea was that it's a government run facility with half a thousand cats. I'm sure there is plenty of care, so I believe the issue is moot. In the case of a normal family having more than 5 cats, I'd agree with you...5 is pushing it.

My understanding as a long-retired veterinarian is that the esophageal varices play a role in cat purring and is related to their blood pressure which may decrease somewhat when they are relaxed or near death. High rise syndrome is what happens when cats fall out of skyscrapers, and have a remarkable ability to survive (although there are limits related to height) when they hit the pavement. There are specific fractures that occur because they orient normally as if standing on all fours so when they contact the ground the fracture forces are on their jaws(mandibular symphysis), acetabulum of the hips, and elbows.

I'd like an episode on dog communication, either standalone or vs cat communication. Cats are unique in that they don't usually communicate vocally with other cats. The range of sounds they make and their ability to mimic sounds (that high pitched yowl is a lot like a baby cry and meant to get attention or food... probably learned it watching you take care of the kids, y'know?), so their tendency to communicate in a whole new manner with humans is pretty cool. On the other hand, dogs have their own communication, and it seems humans kind of get it better. But why? I dunno. Animals, man.

maybe I can add to your answer, I heard: cats dont hate water. in fact there are a few breeds of cats that love water so much they will get wet whenever given the chance. what they hate is not the water but the fact that your forcing them to do something they don't want to do. if it's their decision they will gladly get wet. have you seen videos of cats under faucets getting their heads wet? they don't squirm as much because they know that they are in control. if they are the ones making the decision, then they won't hesitate to do what they want but since you forcing them they'll resist as much as possible. I might be wrong but this is what I think.

Hey, many people in previous century ridiculed many scientific hypothesis and called it BS (not in the same context). However, many of the those turned out to be true, don't be so quick to dismiss hypothesis unless otherwise proven to be completely wrong. In science every possibility is taken into account and then proven or disproved until one hypothesis stands or maybe a whole new hypothesis is created.
@karlzone211 жыл бұрын
You are confusing a scientific hypothesis with a random guess. A random guess is "most likely 100% bullshit", but a scientific hypothesis is supported by evidence.

karlzone2 there's always evidence to the country though, if you only hear one side, the evidnce always seems incredibly convincing

***** I dont think that shivering would have that effect. Shivering is the bodies method of trying to maintain heat (as plenty of people already know) but the contractions of muscles in our bodies during shivering i think are not strong enough to actually emit a sound frequency. If that were to happen to us, our muscle contractions would hafta be a hell of a lot stronger and more frequent. Which, kinda seems painful...

Yes, he is annoying. It's the condescending hipster "any idiot should know this" delivery that makes it annoying. Yes, hipsters are condescending, annoying, arrogant, etc...

I never realized that cats purred when they were in pain or ill. My old cat purred and became very cuddly suddenly for about six weeks and his only physical change was a little weight loss (nothing really noticeable) and shaggier fur (he was 12, we just figured his age was finally showing). He stopped drinking and eating by the sixth week and we took him to the vet. He had feline lymphoma and we had to put him down. That's the most frustrating about cats: they hide that sort of thing and if you don't speak cat, you have no way of knowing.

A friend of mines cat jumped off 8th floor building and survived somehow and even looked pretty healthy, eventually healed as i heard it has few broken legs. When we took the cat that fell the cat was purring. I thought that time that the poor cat is happy to see us and that we are helping her.. i was young back then.

2:19 I was completely convinced he was gonna say “strapped to vibrating cats” right before he said plates.

I read a different explanation a while ago. Kittens are born blind, but can feel/sense vibration. Hence the mother uses her purring to signal to her kittens where she is and when it's time to feed etc. This signal hence has a broader meaning of "I (the source of vibration) am/is not a threat". Cats use it when they are happy and content, but also frightened or injured. In both cases, it is advantageous to the cat to inform those around that it is not a threat and has no desire to be harmed.

around 1:38 you mentioned the State University of New York.....that isnt even a school is it? SUNY is a collection of schools in new york, many of which go by different names such as SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Cortland.....but are all part of the same SUNY Organization. There are actually 64 schools in total, with about 400-450k students currently enrolled....so what exactly did you mean that "in the late 1990's Dr Clinton Rueben of The State University of New York and his colleges discovered...." That isnt exactly a school

My cat was notorious for purring. He had a girlish meow with the purr of a lion. When he had gotten sick, the purring stopped. The whole laying on my computer/homework/body had stopped as well. I put him on my lap as we waiting for the doctor to come in and put him to sleep. I could see it in his face that he was getting progressively worse as the doctor took her sweet time in the back room, talking to her coworkers. As pissed off as we all were, I started tearing up. He was purring. He was making himself comfortable through all the discomfort he had faced those last few months. He gave me my favorite sound of his for just a few moments, and I don't care for what reason, it was special. I miss that fat ass.
