The reduction of brain volume is something that is actually found in human evolution as well. In general our brains grew a lot over the last two million years, but it went through a very similar shrinkage as we started to learn how to cooperate more. It happened at least twice as we began to build bigger tribes and when farming/trade began to emerge. We just lost a lot of the more sociopath/antisocial circuitry once we saw how much more beneficial it was to trust people instead of immediately beating them to death with rocks. It's still a work in process, but humanity technically domesticated itself and that's not a bad thing.
@cerberaodollam4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm so that might be why more intelligent people are less social? That has... Kinda scary implications.
@MrThatguyuknow4 жыл бұрын
@@cerberaodollam Not really how it works in this case. For domestocation It's the reduction of primative parts associated with finding and identifying threats. Technically a person undergoing a phycosis has this part of thier brain in overdrive. This doesn't mean by any means they are thinking more clearly. In fact the feeling you get where you can't think when you're very stressed out is your brain defaulting back to that old circuts to "fight or flight" in a very similar fasion. You don't think, just react through instinct. Because your body is just trying to keep you from dieing and it does that at any cost, even if the choices needed to arent the best. It's true, some people with social disorders can be smarter in select tasks because the areas of thier brain dedicated to language are malformed so it can be rewired to do something else, but most studies say sociable people are actually generally smarter than those who aren't mainly because of the increase in mental health it gives coupled with the excercise it gives your brain.
@diablominero4 жыл бұрын
@@cerberaodollam Imagine my computer has a big, bulky side panel that's obstructing airflow. While it used to be necessary for protection of the delicate internal components, now it just takes up space and causes problems. Taking it off will make the computer run faster and make it smaller. We evolved a lot of brain systems for protection that now only cause problems and make us stupider. Case in point, fear of rejection: in small tribes, being rejected might kill you, but these days it's just a minor setback. Losing those brain systems will make brain volume shrink while making people more intelligent. Take your desire to find "scary implications" elsewhere.

I taught my three cats to shake and sit! The shake command I used is “paw”, and sit was a little harder, but they still picked it up quickly. One of our boys learned it in a day. I taught them mostly the same way as our dogs. They love it if it means they get treats.
@Duskkit3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, cats aren't untrainable, they just don't take to it as eagerly as dogs. If I call "kikikikikikikiii" with just the right tone and infliction, my family's cats will come running. (The current three less so than the ones we had since I was a baby, but they've spent less time with my mom using it to call them to food, since these three don't like much of anything but dry kibble and therefore have always-available kibble bowls without the morning canned wet food feeding the other cats had.) Which is somewhat reassuring as a fire safety plan, actually-- yell "kikikikikii" as I exit, and it's that much more likely that the cats will find the open door and make it safely outside. There have also been various cats who've needed long term medication, and after a few days or weeks they learn not to resist so much, or even to come to the human when it's time for the yucky stuff that will make them feel better. Also, people who say cats and dogs don't get along are misinformed. Sure, some cats don't get along with some dogs, but that's also true if you say that with cats and cats, or dogs and dogs. You just need dogs and cats that are compatible. The cats we had when I was little happily shared the house and yard with two large dogs (three, actually, but two at a time). Well, most of them did; one of the cats came with the house and was wary of both dogs and humans due to bad experiences with the previous house owners, but she mellowed as she aged, and certainly the dogs weren't seeking out and antagonizing her beyond the initial "oh, here's another friendly small furry thing, lemme sniff and say hello" *claw swipe* "no, wait, this one is a painful small furry thing, stay away from that."

The science behind most of the cat portion is questionable at best non-existent at worst. 1. Cats are not domesticated in the truest sense of the word. They have a working relationship with humans even to this day. Their levels of semi-domestication are just a bit of genetic tweaks that they themselves are responsible for, not humans. It allows them to tolerate us without freaking out. 2. There is no published scientific article anywhere that says domestic cats have a 30% smaller brain than their wild counterparts. 5-7% max. is the most you’ll see. 3. There are no published scientific papers anywhere that say domestic cats can digest plant matter better than wild cats.

I've had 37 years of continuous cat cohabitation. They only eat grass so they can hork it up later on your bedspread, shoes, clean laundry, carpet, paperwork on your desk, etc. Then they look at you like _you're_ the one who did it.

An addition: Cats can transmit a parasite called toxoplasmosis through their poop. There is a chance that if the mother catches this disease that she will pass it onto her baby, which will then result in congenital toxoplasmosis. It has a chance to cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and severe and progressive disabilities in children. Not saying cats can't help a child by improving their immune system, but maybe don't keep a pregnant lady around cat poop. If you own a cat, don't let people who are pregnant be the one to change the cat's litter box.

All the years of owning dogs caused me to make a huge mistake with my friends cat when I assumed it wanted a belly rub, turns out they aren't cool with that and decide to try and eat your hand.

Oh no! You can do a little reading up/Youtubing about how to read cats. Ex., Dogs are really high up the food chain while cats are both middling and less domesticated than dogs, thus more panicky and skittish. So cats are prey as well as predator and overall more cautious. A cat rolling onto its back is usually feeling trusting and safe, but most still do not want to be touched on the tum even by their most favorite humans, sadly. If the cat is young or is particularly social and rambunctious, it may have even thought it was play-wrestling time since grabbing and wrestling an adorable energetic kitten is pretty hard to resist, thus they learn belly touch=CHALLENGE ACCEPTED, FIGHT! One way to encourage a cat is with slow blinks. A cat that looks at you with half-closed eyes and slowly blinks or closes them is feeling good around you, not being snobby. You can slow-blink at cats to try to help encourage them to relax around you. But of course personalities still vary, so the owner might have more specific insight for that particular cat.

Huh! I didn’t know about the hygiene hypothesis.. so when I was pregnant with my first, I was living with cats and dogs so he’d be 30% less likely to have those allergies whereas I was only living around a dog, so my second kiddo only gets maybe a 30% drop in allergies to dogs only. Curious .. so far, everyone’s cat allergy free (we have 6 lol)

When I was a teen my family had an old tired tabby who liked to go out into the backyard & sleep in a shady spot. The neighbors had a mutt that just loved to chase cats. He would come over & chase our old tabby but she always got away. One day, kitty was snoozing in the corner of the backyard when this mutt surprised her & she found herself trapped in the corner. He was barking his fool head off at her when she reached out with claw extended & ripped open the side of his snout. From near his eye gland to his nose along the whole length of his snout she had opened him up. He was bleeding like a stuck pig & ran for home howling all the way. That dog never again came into our yard. !
