Why do Hammerhead Sharks have hammer heads?

Why do hammerhead sharks have hammer-shaped heads? In this video, we answer that question. It all has to do with their electroreceptors, also called Ampullae of Lorenzini. Hammerheads evolved wider heads, because it allowed their electroreceptors to spread over a wider area, which allows them to detect more fish (to eat).

@aratof18
@aratof18 Ай бұрын
@@FordFourD-aka-Ford4D how does that work? aren't their eyes facing opposing directions?
@zedtheexplorer5206
@zedtheexplorer5206 Ай бұрын
@@aratof18 Eyes don’t just see straight. If you hold your finger in front of your face then move it to the side without moving your eyes, you will surprise yourself with how large you peripheral vision is. This is combined with the fact that hammerheads can move their eyes to focus on specific things like we can Now if you alternate closing one eye then the other you can see the objects in you vision shifting position because of the different positions of the eyes. The larger that difference the more able you are to guess the difference. Typically animals don’t need such a large distance because for the most part land creatures move in 2 dimensions. However, for fish their prey can be anywhere around the predator in 3D space so the advantage of being able to see all around outweighs any of the negatives.

Great channel for kids that are becoming a bit older and about to understand more than they used to. It's like when kids become about 5, 6 or 7, and they outgrow their ABCs/123s, but don't understand the more advanced stuff. Explaining stuff in such a manner, it's good for keeping the attention of adults, and good for kids to be able to understand. This channel is very good when it comes to education regarding general facts and info, amd being great for making it interesting for all ages. Hut the nail on the head with the formula used here.

You left out a huge part of the puzzle. Which is that they eat mostly rays, which spend a lot of the time hidden underneath the sand. They evolved to have larger heads with more receptors because it was extremely important for their survival to be able to find their food under the sand. Not simply because it allowed them to "find fish over a wider range".
