Discover how evolution and natural selection influence why the human body has vestigial organs- body parts that no longer serve their original purpose.
--
You know that little pink thing nestled in the corner of your eye? It’s actually the remnant of a third eyelid. In humans, it’s vestigial, meaning it no longer serves its original purpose. There are several other vestigial structures in the human body, quietly riding along from one of our ancestor species to the next. But why have they stuck around for so long? Dorsa Amir investigates.

Third eye is really referred to the penial gland in our brains. By rubbing your finger in an area above the center for your eyebrows you can exercise it, almost feel like a muscle in your head. Though you may remain skeptical, but it does have a sensation when concentrating on it. Though may or may not be the actual penial gland we're feeling, but that's the brief explanation.

Actually, the M. palmaris longus (and I guess the M. plantaris too for that matter) is really nice to have _because_ it’s basically useless. In case of serious injury to muscles and/or tendons you can remove them and use them as auto-transplants to repair more important muscles without sacrificing tendons which have a far bigger function

With this video I learned that the human being had several evolutions until he reached what he is today, that we have a third eyelid that basically is useless for just other animals and that the appendix is something that has always been with us. This video was very interesting in my opinion because it leaves us thinking about our evolution.

The appendix discussion is so outdated. We *know* that the appendix is a bacterial reservoir. But it's not to help digest food. It's to restore your microbiome. If your microbiome is disturbed, such as during diarrhea, the appendix is the organ that restores your microbiome if you survive the diarrhea (since those were a bit dangerous in ancient times). And since we're learning more and more how important our microbiome is, it then becomes evident how useful the appendix is. Of course, if it's causing problems, surgically removing the appendix is the right move. We've also discovered that people lacking an appendix tend to have a higher rate of infection (way more dangerous in ancient times). The appendix doesn't serve a visible function, but it's still pretty important. Also, if it was actually useless, then it'd make literally zero evolutionary sense why it evolved multiple separate times across many animals. No matter how random evolution is, a trait evolving separately multiple times is quite indicative that that trait serves an important function. Also the tail theory sounds almost as iffy. Almost all apes live in forested areas. Humans are basically the exception. Also, monkeys move around on the ground just fine even with their tails. This whole video in general just sounds pretty outdated.

So, after googling and reflecting on my own knowledge of my anatomy, we only have the reminant of the third eyelid and not the actual lid (or membrane called the nictitating membrane). So to answer my own questions, no we can't manually close the lid since it's basically nonexistent, and if we did have it the membrane would have been translucent which would be dope.

The thing that makes me think a lot is that with recent medical breakthroughs and advancements, it kind of disrupts natural selection in humans, because now that there's a problem, boom we just fix it physically, but our DNA still contains that problem, so it just keeps passing it on through our offspring unless a mutation occurs. Like, sometimes I think that medical advancements are bad because diseases and illnesses that could have killed millions helped with natural selection and now that they are gone or have treatments, those diseases/illnesses may never go away. Idk if I make sense though.

the appendix serves two purposes: it aids in the immune system similar to the tonsils. its also a reservoir for your gut biome, say you get food poisoning, your body flushes everything out and this cripples your current gut biome, luckly if you have your appendix, a batch of your micro biome survived inside it and will restore everything to normal.

I found out that this information is incorrect. The small pink thing is actually:The lacrimal caruncle is the small, pink, globular spot at the inner corner, or the medial canthus, of the eye. It contains both oil and sweat glands. The whitish material that sometimes accumulates in that region is from these glands. The tarsal plate is composed of connective tissue that gives support to the eyelids. I got this information from safari. My science teacher who was once a college professor told me that the lacrimal caruncle is actually part of the tear glands.

my biology teacher in high school told me that the appendix hadn't completely evolved out of us because it supported the immune system and lymphatic system somehow. is that just one of those "we can't find another reason for this thing to not disappear" reasons? Uh... I still find a use for it. When particulates get in my eye, I always find them nestled in that corner pocket which is soft enough for me not to register the particulate anymore... ie, it moves over there, doesn't hurt and then I can get it out.
