Even though there are not that many hunter-gatherer tribes left, a lot of them wear a great deal less clothing than we do, both men and women. Partly that's climate, but I also think the nudity issue becomes more pronounced if your society gets more populous, the sexual issues becomes more dicey because you are now around strangers more. In tribes everyone is known by everyone else, so the sexual rules and roles are set.

I believe that our lack of fur is the basic reason we wear clothes, but some people associate status with clothing while others claim their individuality by developing a signature style of dressing. The bottom line is vulnerability, be it psychological or physical "we cover-up to protect ourselves from the elements ".The skin is the biggest exposed organ with pores and sweat glands. A severe change in temperature or bacteria can adversely effect the health of this organ. Clothes act as a barrier between the body and the elements. 💚

i think the reason is probably simple. when we first invented clothing, we probably started wearing it for protection from the enviroment, and it became so common to wear clothes that it started to be seen as strange to not wear anything, even during times when we do not need protection from the elements. people arbitrarily judge others who deviate from social norms. why are people judged if they wear a bikini in a grocery store instead of at the beach? it is not because of the lack of clothing, otherwise we would judge them for wearing it at the beach too. the only reason is that its uncommon to wear a bikini in a grocery store. its against social norms

whats funny is, a generally "unattractive" woman will feel good looking at girl magazines, but then eventually it eats away at her, because whatever you adore, you compare yourself to it, and the girl will compare herself to the model, and then imagine her on the front cover, and feel insecure due to her "inferiority". hence why we do that for women today on magazines to be plus sized, to make them think there is no shame. There is shame, but it is what it is.

I’ve pondered that question for years (why does Homo sapiens wear clothes) and concluded that the wearing of clothing was driven by males of the species and served two important purposes in the development of human society: First, since clothing hides a man’s physique from other males, the custom of wearing clothes would allow physically weaker males to acquire positions of power (whereas before clothing, leaders were the most physically powerful men). Weaker males had a vested interest therefore in propagating the practice of clothing wear within societies. Perhaps in this way clothing facilitated the spread of human intelligence through early human societies as a man with a weak body but a razor sharp mind would be more likely to influence his tribe if his physical weakness was not so obvious as it is when one is naked. Secondly, clothing would help males to conceal their female mates from other mens glances and advances, which would likely strengthen monogamous bonding, and therefore tribal cohesion.

This topic is interesting coming from Peterson. It is suspected amongst my peers that he is INFJ. A common thread amongst INFJ is that we are rarely clothed at home. I do not understand people who wake up and put on slacks and a button up just to eat breakfast. I keep the temperature in my home set to what is comfortable in a pair of boxer shorts, I can't even stand PJ's. My sole aversion to public nudity is the fact that it can get me locked up!

I'd say it's complicated, with many reasons. First, the Biblical: When G-d cast Adam and Eve out of the garden (and blocked the entrance to the path inside with an Angel with a flaming sword.) G-d slew animals and gave them the skins for covering. Why? Because they were being cast out into a world of thorns! (If anybody has had to wrestle with blackberry vines and greenbriars and wild roses, you might see the point!) Pun intended. But hygiene is another good reason, and there's a large number of issues of hygiene that you might imagine. From an artistic point of view (I'm an artist of no repute) I've always noticed how pools in the stream, next to a sycamore tree, usually have times in the day when some of it is bright with sunlight, and other parts are dark - dark and enticing. And clothes cover the more mysterious parts.

I don't think the proximity to water explains the evolution of losing hair. Seals, otters, beavers are all vastly superior swimmers to us and are also covered with hair. It would make sense to me that it is easier for hair to adapt with structure and levels of oil rather than to just almost disappear. I guess dolphins and Hippos are counter examples but it is hard to know what levels of hair they had before heading back to water.

I strongly suspect it has to do with males hiding their interest in females. As Peterson points out, this is generally something males are much more concerned with than females, and only males have such an explicit and (internally) uncontrollable indication that they're sexually attracted to someone. The only way to hide it is by physically preventing it from appearing. It's not totally clear why it should be so important that males hide this, or why it only tends to matter in larger societies rather than smaller tribal communities, but it seems like it's a way of "leveling the playing field," since females only have to control their behavior when they're sexually attracted to males. Maybe this is to prevent other males from seeing you as a potential "threat" to their partner. If a man gets an erection as the sight of your female partner, you naturally become suspicious of him. But being attracted to another man's woman doesn't necessarily mean you'll get her to cheat, so maybe societies are more cohesive and cooperative when we hide the explicit indicator and just rely on men to control their behavior, giving them the benefit of the doubt. As for why females are expected to wear clothes, that's likely to cover up the parts men want to look at, as doing so is another explicit indicator of interest. Just my guess.

We often tell girls to cover up because it's "immodest". ("showing off" in other words) But really, that's not accurate. Do you really think the rebellious young girl that's trying on her older sisters crop top for the first time is trying to "show off her psychophysiological qualities"? lol No. Most times she's too naive. She wouldn't know the full effect of what she's doing. But Peterson cuts deeper here. We cover up/wear clothing in general, at least partly, to reduce the evaluation of people based on their attractiveness. With less clothes, people judge based on appearances more and more, separating people. But with more clothes, both the ugly person and the beautiful person can be your friend.

Clothing is added to protect weakness, that can be vs. stranger danger, weather, work or war. In the bible is discusses uncovering nakedness, such as your father or sister. This isa warning against forbidden knowledge and ensuing sin against God's commandements which is to love without judgement I think, but in proper context (through wisdom). every instance in the Bbile where 'man' takes it upon himself to become independent, whether by Kings, census, slavery etc it thus becomes an albatross around his neck. I think it's clearly that knowledge of good and evil is too much a burden for man to bear, and thus we are accursed.

But is the shame associated with nudity becoming less stigmatized in Western modernity with the rampant sexualization of our culture? Degeneracy seems to be increasingly normalized. A question that I don't think anyone has asked here yet: did clothing that covers the genital areas evolve in humans before we left Africa, and just get thicker and more comprehensive when we explored colder climates, or did it start when we explored colder places - and this could have been in the mountains of Africa - and migrate back into our perpetually warm ancestral homelands in Africa? I guess the evidence is sufficiently perishable that we'll never know.

We wore the hair off when we shimmied down the trees. During the Ice Age we all walked around in Mastodon fur, which got very warm, so we permanently shed our skin hair. We came from outer space. All the other animals were secured in radiation proof test tubes, but man and woman were awake tending to the tubes, and the Solar rays gave them such a bad sunburn that it burned away the hair follicles right down to the DNA. The dog ate 'em.

I wear white all of the time. Have been doing this for a very good time, like about three years or so. Very feminine pieces are worn outside - or as close as I can depending on the errand - and I am almost stopped every time with a complement on how nice this is - what I am wearing, especially when there is lace involved. Appropriately covered in all manners conservative and so as not to reveal that which is covered. One day after I started this wearing of white constantly, I found a scripture Ecclesiastes 9:8 which states: "Let your garments be always white." Well funny that. My innate self knew this to be a thing commanded from above. So it shall be, to do this, today, tomorrow and all the rest of the days moving forward. And the really cool thing is that I feel good wearing it, I feel positive, and those vibes I can give to others - to shine bright! Jordan is a true gem. Much ❤ to the channel that has brought forth so much goodness for me.

Theory: We lost our hair from running so much in africa and needing to be cooler. Then, when we moved up north, we couldn't face the cold and had the idea to wear the skins of what we ate to protect us from the cold. As we got more intelligent we also became more capable of comparing our capabilities. Clothes hid our percieved physical inferiority to others hence we became ashamed to be naked.

Being a life long nudist and age 65. Clothing has never been an issue as I was the handyman at a nudist resort. Best job ever working without clothing. The people were amazing everyone so friendly some had cabins some trailors. Young and old both attended. Europe is not the clothing issue like in North America. Leave your cares with your clothes. Toronto has a nude beach and is always very busy some with clothes some without. Body acceptance and bare as you dare

Some superior force has taken a wild Humanoid creature from nature, and then with genetic intervention has created a slave race of Humans. We are original wild creatures that have been genetically modified with pronounced biofunctions for societal needs, but with less biofunctions necessary to survive in the wild. Hence why we need clothing, heating, etc. We also have strange abnormalities like hair that continuously grows with no beneficial function - just an unnecessary inconvenience. Plus compared to other creatures we are highly sexual and psychotic.

Because we need protection against the elements . They provide warmth and safety. Identity. Clothes provide entertainment also . They allow a man to think and feel strength by putting on his work boots , and fulfilling purpose and sense of importance . And the same for women when they put on a nice two piece suit and administration shoes, to fulfill their own office roles . 🤔 So I guess it's tied in with identity, self esteem and self confidence and purpose . Safety . Like you can't go bush walking without jeans and solid footwear otherwise the stinging nettles harm your bare legs , and you're at risk of bites around feet and ankles , so those protective reasons come into it too.

Simple answer: Before mankind fell into sin SHAME did not exist. When we fell into sin all of a sudden Shame came into the human existance and therefore nudity became known as before it was unkown. As a matter of fact in the book of Genesis one of the very first things that happend after Eve & Adam disobeyed God was they fled from each other because they saw each others nakedness and covered their nakedness with leaves and vegetation.

@@cwchadwynn Of course you do, you supress it through your sinful nature. Romans Chapter 1 says this about you: 18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

Doesn't it make more sense, as a simpler explanation, that after they disobeyed god, they did what children often do, and tried to hide from Him? And they were so new to sin, that their first attempt at deception was hilariously bad: 'If we cover ourselves in leaves, then God will think we're trees and won't see us'. Isn't that the kind of thing that would come to the mind of an innocent child?
