Great video as usual Scott. This one has particular poignancy for me. My paternal Grandad was a Royal Marine aboard HMS Penelope, which in February of 1944, whilst providing artillery support of the Anzio beachhead, was torpedoed and sunk by a German U boat. Sadly Grandad was lost with the ship and lies off the coast there. Have been there and laid some flowers. Thanks again and stay well.

I went to Anzio over 40 years ago. The thing I remember most about it was having the best pizza I have ever tasted. It came from some little hole in the wall place down near the harbour.

I loved staying in Anzio. It’s good and peaceful as a base to travel in to Rome and also to spend time at the sea.

This brought back memories of my childhood. When I was 10 I visited Rome for 1 week and then to Nettuno for 4 days I don't remember too much about it only the beautiful beach with roasting hot sand. This was in the late 50's not many people travelled so far in those days. Thanks for taking me down memory lane.

Absolutely love this place. Have stayed twice. Once in Anzio and once in Nettuno. I combine this with a stay in Rome too. One of my favorite places. Not many international tourists and great value for money.

I did the exact opposite this past January. I stayed in Anzio and took a day trip by train into Rome! In fact, the hotel I stayed in can be seen over his right shoulder at 10:32.

Thanks Scott, I enjoyed that. I like them a bit longer as you make things so interesting especially your travel journeys the long ones PS - the thumbnail looks great. So many of the people on KZbin pull ridiculous faces…there’s no need. Ever thought of doing that cross country greyhound bus from New York to LA. I’d love to get your input on that. Take care.👍

Scott, you and young Steve are spoiling us this week. Were the card payment is concerned I made the same experience last November in Aachen, with the exception of one shop they all wanted cash which meant I had to go to a bank and withdraw some Euros. About 52 years ago, I still lived in Germany, I visited a grotto or cave near the city of Mettmann in the Neandertal, Neander Valley in English. Five or six years ago my son and I made one of our many trips to Germany and I wanted to show him the cave. We were very unlucky as the cave had collapsed. The reason for the collapse was a nearby quarry and the massive vibrations from there. We were rather disappointed.

Interesting video, we’ve only visited Italy once while staying in Austria travelling the magnificent Brenner Autobahn to the Europe Brücke and on to Sterzing (Vipiten) in the Sud Tirol. A connection with your video is that the local church In Kirkheaton, Yorkshire where I live is also called St. John the Baptist.

Excellent stuff. Not sure if you’ve come across a great final retrospective trip by Alan Whicker called ‘Whicker's War’, available on this fine platform. He landed and fought for months up to Rome as an army photographer. It starts in Anzio. A great watch. Thank you Scott for the pure variety of your Chanel.

I went to Anzio as a child, the one memory I have is that I got badly sunburnt, the sun is stronger that far south. Looking at your video it seems that this is a less wealthy area of Italy compared with your town vidoes from recent videos.

Tides in the Mediterranean are not a big deal (something to do with the Straits of Gibraltar restricting the flow in and out). The complex linkspans to get to the car deck on the Calmac ferries at places like Brodick just aren't needed in the Med. There's a jetty and any small change in the relative height of the jetty and ship can be dealt with using the ship's ramp alone.

Me and the family are off to Italy beginning of June, Rome for 4 nights, then to Pompeii for 2 nights, Sorrento for 7 nights 2 different places and then over to Olbia, Sardinia for the last 4 nights any advice or tips would be great, looking at using public transport to get around and having to sort out food for ourselves. Not been before.

Anzio of not inconsiderable historical interest of course as the scene of major landings in WWII (and some of the most incompetent generalship of WWII), now probably largely forgotten by most people who've only ever heard of D-day

The Italians had already capitulated in 1943 and it was the Germans the Allies faced on landing at Anzio. Matt Clark could have progressed quickly after the landing but he dug in allowing the Germans to counter attack. When Cassino fell he had the chance to capture lots of Germans but chose to capture Rome instead.

Recently discovered through DNA tests that my dad is half Italian and my grandfather is Italian, whether he lives/lived there or not I'm unsure. Nonetheless I've taken interest in my Italian ethnicity, I don't claim to be Italian or anything but I always love to see your videos on Italy as I've never been and your videos take me there in a way, to see parts of a country I have links to. I hope one day I can go and see some of the places you feature on your videos. Thank you Scott, fantastic work as always
