Robert: I echo your comments, and THANK YOU. I am a 76 year old Harvard grad, have owned 28 Volvo's, on average paid $500 for each, got 100,000 safe and worry free miles and sold each for a profit. I do much of my own word, often use your guide for things I can't figure. Now own 99 V70R for my wife;s car and smile about your respect for them... Timing belts scare me. I found reputable shop, I bring them hot coffee in mornings, cold six-pack on Friday afternoon and that resulted in $375 for a timing belt they quoted at $650! How often do you see bill reduced??? Everyone who see's your video can lead a premium quality life by avoiding flashy fashion of priced new cars with back breaking payments, and glide through life surrounded by safe, secure, comfort, economy and profit by following your suggestion. Thanks for all you do for us!! PS: I write for the Silver Bullet, a Lone Ranger publication so smile at your car's name!!!!

I have bought and mostly DIY-serviced all of the more than 10 Volvo wagons that I have owned since buying my first 1972 Volvo 145 wagon back in early 1982. A Volvo has always been my first choice when looking for a new car too even now. I currently own three, a 1998 V70 GLT and 1998 V90 and a 1996 Volvo 960 wagon. Before buying my first Volvo in 1980, I researched and read everything I could find about the company and that was before personal computers and the internet was available. It was that information that made me an almost exclusive Volvo buyer. I have owned other cars but a Volvo has always been one of them. I have my eyes on the new V90 and have an invite to test drive at a local dealer here in Arizona. Keep up the good work, man.

Great video Robert. It really comes down to time and knowledge. These cars are aging and inevitably things are going to need attention. My '95 with just 93k miles keeps me busy chasing little things (but runs reliably and strong! I would drive it to the moon!). The upside to their age is that they can be bought very inexpensively...just have a good mechanic or be prepared to watch Robert videos for hours and hours! LOL

Enrique Vazquez I also bought an 03 S60 this year, and the cluster stopped working a couple of months later. This problem is fairly notorious on this era S60 and V70, it would seem. I intend to ship the cluster in for refurbishment, which costs about $400 and comes with guarantee. Xemodex, from Canada I think, offers this service and their website supplies a lot of information thereto. I am aware, from an internet thread, of a Taunton, MA company also specializing in these instrument clusters, but I don't remember their name just now. For now, I top off my fuel tank often(I love the Volvo's large gas tank btw) and reckon speed by GPS.

+Arthur Smith The last Honda Accord I had, I picked up from a dealer. I'd go to the new car shops, go look at yesterday's trade in, ask for the key, start and car, and make an offer. Worked great for me. The new car shops are not going to keep a 10 year old car with 150,000+ miles on it. They just dump them at auctions or to used car dealers.

@RobertDIY9 жыл бұрын
VictorSinclair That does mean a lot. We have to remember that "blue book" is an average. Lot's of cars sell for more, some for less. The thing is, you don't want to pay more for a car that has NOT been maintained.

I'm watching again in my suggested videos you popped up again. In Ireland Volvo are quite popular,but diesel is more common than petrol, and more economical. I much prefer a car that can do 40mpg as opposed to 25-8 mpg on a petrol car. What I want in Ireland for £500 is an American V8, and petrol to cost the same in Ireland as it does in the states 😉

Problems/repairs over 8 years......water pump, catalytic replacement, loose-stray bolt in the transmission (yikes), rear main seal, new radiator, timing belt @128k (standard maintenance), motor and trans mounts, tires and alignment, carbon flush, sensors for CA emission, various relays. and power window maintenance/repair. That's not a long list for a 21yo car, over my 8 years. Remember, "You never 'own' a car. You 'pay' for a car". If you buy an older VOLVO, get a good metric ratchet set, an extension, and a U-joint. It was owned by a doctor before me, full Volvo history, had a new roof put on just before I bought it and I paid just £600 for it (about $800) with new m.o.t.it drives like a brand new car, there isn't a single scratch to bod thbinterior is like brand new, it has plenty of power and the stereo is amazing.it has factory stereo with the top of range 15 speakers, it got 8 speakers in front, 6 speakers in rear plus 2 subwoofers behind rear seats. Its 250bhp standard but I had it remapped and tuned, new induction kit and exhaust system, next on my list is intercooler and dump/blow off valve and maybe a bigger turbo than the t5. Just with the remap and induction kit I'm getting just under 400bhp, but torque steer is crazy

Of course I never let the oil get low, but I have personally put 200,000 plus on it and it is still as strong as a rock! However, I bought a 2000 V70 July of 2015 with 211,000 on it for 1,500 and it isn't quite as well built. Still, I think I have gotten my money's worth out of both! Pretty much nails advice on how to approach purchasing a car that you are prepared to repair yourself in order to achieve the most economical solution. However, I don't see the value in paying for full coverage insurance on cars with limited replacement value.Excellent video. Thanks, Robert.
@RobertDIY8 жыл бұрын
+Brad Grau they all have limited replacement value. One was totaled and I got a check large enough to fix the car and buy another one. Another one got totaled and the check was 4 times what I paid for the car. Works fine for me.

Thank you so much you are a wealth of knowledge. I just bought a 2000 Volvo S80 2.9 Turbo.Only has 136k miles, bought it from a elderly couple that loved it but didn't want to do the repairs so they sold to me. The car currently looses power at mid point on the rpm meter, it also smokes at that mid point. I have changed the catalyst converter and one sensor, also replaced spark plugs, A mechanic used his diagnostics meter and got this code reading "P0236 Turbo Supercharger boost sensor". When I research that code it relates to a boost sensor also call Turbo control valve. What may you thing is wrong.
@RobertDIY7 жыл бұрын
Is that the only code? Is there any lights on in the dash?
@omarm99447 жыл бұрын
Robert DIY, Yes the red triangle dash warning comes on and stays on

well I know who to sell my s70 to now when I get all I can get out of it. That is if I ever decide to sell it ;) who knows it might last 500,000 miles. I got mine for 600. needed valves and all the basics of maintenance, pcv, brakes, timing belt, tires, but its generally in good shape exterior and interior wise. I just love how gosh dang reliable the thing is. if you know how to properly maintain a Volvo they just last as long as you want them to last.

hey Robert we were doing a cam seal replacement on a 2001 S80 T6 and ran into a few issues with aligning the cams. the job calls for a specific tool designed to lock the cams whilst you remove the cam sprockets. One of the sprockets is directly bolted to the cam using three 10 mm bolts. But the other one is held by a long bolt in the center that once removed can spin independently of the cam. So we didn't have the tool available for rent at auto store so we decided to be a little creative. To remove the long bolt we first took out the sprocket gear but whilst doing that it spun and we lost tdc. after we removed it we held the inside piece with pliers at the lip and removed the bolt. Now we're stuck trying to find tdc on the right cam. there's a dimple on both cams but we're not sure whether they are the tdc reference. If my breakdown is clear please help

Timing on these cars are not set by TDC. That is a good way to destroy a head or entire engine. Use the marks and cam tools.

OK watching your video I didn't notice the dimples on ur cams as I see them on the S80. We have already taken the vvt off without locking the cams so the cam rotated. How do we now align the mark on the vvt sprocket with the notch on the timing cover knowing that the cam has moved?
@RobertDIY8 жыл бұрын
Is the crank on the mark? If so, the cam may be able to spin around 360 degrees. Not sure, it does work on the I5 engines. Other than that you may have to pull the cam cover to correct your mistake.
