Just because you pronounce each word clearly, distinctively, and more importantly, slowly. Therefore I can understand you easily. Unlike people in movies, they talk very fast and they often seem to "swallow" some vowels in the words, making it really difficult or impossible to undertand their speeches.

There is also this opportunity to literally look in the mouth of your teacher, which is usually kind of impolite in real life and movie scenes are either shot too far from the speaker or cut in a way you can't always see them. It gives extra information that the brain can use to reconstruct the sound we did not recognize by ear. Thus, it's so difficult to get into listening without looks in the mouth.

I was fortunate enough once to meet a native English speaker who spoke the way Greg's tutoring. It was so delightful to communicate with him. Even my wife, whose English level wasn't higher than A2 back then, noticed that his speech was way easier to understand than she could have expected. He is not a teacher but he is from England as well. And I see the same feature across the other speaker from England.

I suffered for 2-3 years when I first arrived to London. I put a lot of work on my English, but the problem always was to understand the native speakers and different dialects. To make matters worse, native speakers generally never slow down! Even when they see you struggling to understand. And people from north never correct their pronunciación for you to what could sound more like Queen’s English. I could never understand why. Maybe they never learn general English 🤔. I speak my mother tongue in my regional dialect, but I can speak in a general dialect also, because that is what we were taught at school. So I could not understand why people would not just make a bit of effort to speak ‘correct’ English with us, foreigners. Oh well…. After 20 years in the UK now I can understand everyone from anywhere speaking English 👍
@CloudslnMyCoffee
@CloudslnMyCoffee 6 ай бұрын
I think it depends on mindset. Many would not make an effort to correct themselves because they didnt think how they spoke was incorrect. I'm sure many of them could be more formal for professional situations, but why would they be formal and tightly wound for their daily life?

A few ago, I was watching a documentary of your compatriot Simon Reeves and even without reading the subtitles (I deactivated), I understood a few (and I must stressed "a few" by now :) ). Of course I disable the subtitles of your videos and even I dare to accelerate the speed of the videos and still I understand you :) Maybe is just a "self suggestible trick". Send you a fist or elbow bump from here!

Don't is the contraction (the shorter way to say it). This is much more common in spoken English and informal written English, but when we write formally we always use "do not".

The English seem to like to put words together when pronouncing them, just as the Germans do. Only the Germans went much further and connected words not only in oral, but also in written speech (see Mark Twain with his "Hottentottenbegriffsstutzigstotternmutterbeutelrattenbedecktlattengittermörder").

Personally, I think that's a direct road to the hell. The students get used to it and when push comes to shove, e.g. the call at work to the helpdesk doesn't answer "what can I do for you?" but "vatchacaňadafoja?" and you will be out of the game...

It's not only the connected speech that makes it hard for learners. In fact a lot of it is perfectly understood. The real problem is different accents and above all local dialects. I bought new kecks and went to a pub that was chockablock with mates who had a cob-on because the electric had disconnected and their scran couldn't be cooked.

Please make a video do not avoiding using connected speech, linking words, without emphasizing important words, using complex grammar structure, fast English, do not slow down the words. In short, speak natural like a real native speaker. Please make a video about everyday English that you use with your coworkers, colleagues and friends, that you use behind the scenes, casual English that you use outside the KZbin. I hope that everything is clear. Thumbs up!
