Hi! I'm an LDS therapy who's specialty is sex therapy. I generally agree with much of what was mentioned in the video. There's a couple points I'd be cautious in how it's worded. One big one is the part where you mentioned the primary purpose of sex is to have children. You quote a manual from about little over 20 years ago quoting an ensign article from 1975. What I've noticed from more recent church quotes is what you mentioned near the end. where both enjoyment/bonding with a spouse and children are mentioned without labeling one as a primary purpose. This may seem slight, but it honestly made me wince. Member of our faith can often be extremely uncomfortable with sexual pleasure...and it can get so bad that the only time they'll have sex is for procreative purposes. I've heard of some who felt like that was the only really good reason to have sex. How we teach and talk about sex has drastically shifted since the 1970's and shifted still from the 00's. I think the general principle of the LoC is a good one with many benefits. But there are still ways that we think, talk, and practice it that come with concerns and need refinement.

I believe wholeheartedly in the law of chastity. I also beieve that breaking the law of chastity is second only to the shedding of innocent blood, only because it is listed next to it in the Ten Commandments. I also believe exactly what it says in Alma 22 whereas Alma's son was chastized for forsaking the church, for pride and visiting a harlot (a paid professional prostitute.) This is quite a different sin than two young people in love (in my opinion.) I believe a lot of overzealous bishops and parents have caused quite a lot of emotional pain and suffering among "not so perfect young adults" as a result of an overzealous interpretation of a very difficult doctrine. Life is about making mistakes and learning from them and no one is perfect.
@Godwin_the_Scribe9 ай бұрын
I agree. Though my interpretation of Alma 39:5 is a little different. I think that the terrible sin he is referring to is neglecting the ministry werewith he was instructed. The reason he neglected it was the lust of his eyes, but I think the greater crime is that the Lord entrusted him with a sacred calling and he ignored it for selfish reasons. I don't necessarily know why it's always interpreted as being just the sexual sin.

We follow the Biblical Law of Chastity. We refrain from sexual intercourse, before marriage, because sex between a man and woman is a divine act that can lead to the creation of a precious human life. After marriage we remain chaste by only engaging in intercourse with our spouse.
@tessannmacallister57479 ай бұрын
Sexual feelings are not sinful they are meant for marriage sex within marriage is for pleasure and to express love between husband and wife who are legally married and married according to Gods laws either by a pastor in a church and also by a judge in a courtroom or by being married in the temple I agree that we should be faithful to our spouse but I do not think the only purpose of sex is to get pregnant and make thousands of babies
@jackzones6789 ай бұрын
Maybe reverse the order here. The purpose/function of sex on both a secular and spiritual level is to make babies. Humans have sex to make other humans and to propagate humankind. God's children need bodies to fulfill the Plan of Salvation; therefore, sex is critical to the Plan of Salvation. However (and to your point), a husband and wife are obviously encouraged to be intimate because it is unifying and pleasurable.
@mumroberts83599 ай бұрын
He didn’t say that sex was only for making babies, that is one of the reasons the other reason is for expression of love to one another. It’s both.

The law of chastity as we know it today is a Church of Rome invention. The LDS Church simply decided to adopt that model. In biblical times, it was very different. If you disagree, just find one verse in the bible that condemns a married man to have intercourse with a single woman, that is, aside from an economical condemnation (damaged goods). Just my two cents.

My problem isn't with the Law of Chastity, my problem is how it was (hopefully not anymore) enforced and taught. Used gum anyone? When you scare people so bad about breaking the law of chastity to the point where they kill themselves or have PTSD, or they feel guilty about sex inside of marriage, you have caused more consequences than even the blatant breaking of the commandment could or would have done.

The masons topic is very interesting. You have to remember that all the knowledge of the supernatural comes from our heavenly father, there are even Christian Rituals to enslave demons and make them do your bidding. Also all the supernatural powers are priesthood because priesthood is the power heavenly father does things. Also such visions Joseph Smith worshipping demons in hell, you gotta ask yourself what Joseph Smith preached, did he demand blood sacrifices at 3am? Did he start an insurrection? (I kinda wish he did) and what does the Church says you do now. All the Church does is speak of Christ and asks you to heed the spirit. Again, back to masons, they kept all the secret knowledge, the so called occult safe and gatekept it. Joseph Smith was tasked with retriving it and now what the Church does is shares it widely with no restrictions. Everything is available to you from the go. You just have to ask, your bishop or missionaries. As for the symbolism, I'm pretty sure, bare chest and a leg foward is an inviting pose basically "I mean you no harm, come follow me", now would you rather heed it from Christ or some demon?

In addition to obeying God's commandments, we have other reasons it makes sense to wait until marriage for sex and be faithful in marriage. There is to avoid sexual diseases. There is for future marital pleasure. A person who waits until marriage will not be tempted to compare their spouse with previous sex partners. There is so their married sex is special to them. There is because girl friends and boy friends who want sex do not love their partners.

We do not come from one father and one mother. The word God, or Elohim in the Old Testament means the head of the gods. El is singular masculine and heim Is plural feminine. Thus, let us make mankind and OUR image BOTH male AND female. Our father is speaking to women, I don’t know why everyone thinks two guys can have a child. Just pay attention to what you read. See also Ether ch 3! Also, all the scriptures teach that Jesus is our father, he is the one that created us spiritually, and physically.
@gingersnaps2159 ай бұрын
“Elohim” is “gods,” not “head of the gods,” (El Elyon is, I believe, but could be mistaken, “Most High God,”) but if you look up on Bible hub it usually says in the definition for the Hebrew something like “God, or gods, in the general sense” The “-im” ending of “Elohim” is plural masculine, not feminine. Feminine plural endings are usually “-ot.” However, as with most gender languages, when dealing with both masculine and feminine nouns represented by one descriptive word, or one plural, the masculine ending is applied to both (like in French: if you have a crowd of men and women masculine descriptors are used to apply to the crowd as a whole.) I appreciate the argument you’re trying to make, but I dislike the (mistaken in this case) perpetuation of incorrect information! (And I am LDS 🙃)

@ballardfx11409 ай бұрын
The law of chastity is no sexual relations outside of marriage, not no sexual activity. Self pleasure is not against the commandments, as it is written in the Old Testament. It’s about cleanliness. Whenever a man enters a woman she becomes his wife and whenever a woman has a man entering into her that becomes her husband. Other than that we are to watch our thoughts because if we look upon a woman to lust after her, then you are committed it in your heart. But the laws and statutes of the Lord, do not condemn self pleasure, it regulates it with cleanliness. Stop twisting the Commandments to your own opinions and teach correct principles, and then people will govern themselves and not get so out of control.
@Hamann96319 ай бұрын
@ballardfx1140, you are the one doing twisting. Self-sex (self pleasure as you called it) is a sexual relationship with oneself.

@gingersnaps2159 ай бұрын
First off, you’re jumping to conclusions about the time “Joseph was busted by his wife.” What is said about Fanny Alger, is a second hand account from a man who says Emma said she “caught them in the act” in the barn. The context of that statement was Joseph’s marriage to Fanny Alger. We cannot tell from the statement if “the act” was a marriage ordinance, a kiss, or sex. You are leaping to conclusions because of the phrasing of “caught in the act” and living in the 21st century. If you want to make arguments against Joseph and polygamy, go right ahead! But use good information and stick to the facts and not assumptions as the basis of your disgust. He did have many wives, and yes, he did have some for both time (meaning wives in every sense, including sexually) and eternity. He also had a lot of “sealings only” marriages, which were NOT consummated (including to teenager Helen Mar Kimball, AND to older women past childbearing age).
