Why do little kids make speech mistakes? What patterns can we find in their errors? In this week's episode, we talk about sound substitutions in child speech: why it happens, what varieties there are, and how many different varieties we can find even in a single word.
This is Topic #47!

Speaking of nasals, Vóluva, a Conlang I am working on, has two fricatives that are written as and . The way you pronounce is by pronouncing a [h] but instead of the air escaping out of the mouth, it escapes out of the nose instead, and for it's the same except the additional voicing.

I have a little criticism about this otherwise excellent channel. I think the information given sounds more exact than it really is. Like I can feel that some of these theories are contradicted by other theories that you don't subscribe to, so you utterly ignore them and say things as if they were the truth and not to be debated. I think a little bit more openness about the limits of the models and why they might not be really what's happening would be welcome as with every good science channel. Applied science is made of ever evolving models, it would be nicer to acknowledge that every now and then. I still am totally in love with this channel, it's very entertaining, always interesting stuff and it always makes me question things I think I know, which is always great!

It would be interesting to make a conlang with these concepts.

+David “Syntex” Malmström With keeping these parts in mind, for different types of articulation? That would be really cool! I'd like to hear about that. ^_^

Great information, but please don't put the schwa sound on the end of all the consonants. When you say "buh" for /b/, you are actually making two speech sounds - the /b/ and the schwa.

Could fronting have contributed to the ng sound turning into a n sound in certain dialects? (Making - Makin')

When I was little, I fronted the 'g' in 'hamburger', and separated the 'm' from the 'b', turning it into 'hamaburber'. It makes it a lot less embarrassing to learn that those kinds of slip-ups are common.

In Japanese, stopping turns "san" into "chan", and fronting turns "chan" into "tan".
