As a Dutchman, I can say that neither the Presta nor the Schrader valve is 'normal'. Our 'normal' bikes will mostly have a Dunlop-valve. On Mountainbikes you wil see Schrader or Presta, on road race bike Presta. (Schrader: pronunciation: there is no Umlaut, so it's an A like the one at the and of 'Presta').

Presta valve is lighter and makes smaller hole, which makes rim stronger or allows use lighter rims and carry a lighter pump
@ericpmossАй бұрын
The narrow rims need the smaller hole, for sure. I don't think it affects the pump -- I have several portable pumps where I only reverse a small plastic part to switch valve types.

Its all about the size of the hole in the rim of the wheel Presta is better because it is smaller than Schrader and compromises the rim less

That matters on narrow rims however, my 50mm wide rims, it gets down to preference. The presta made its fame on road bikes with their customarily narrow rims requiring a smaller diameter valve stem and slowly spread across disciplines. Today, even BMX race bikes have presta. The only thing that matters is the valve keeps tires ready for adventure.

Schrader valve trumps presta and dunlop any time of the day, they are used on everything, you will never be stranded, it's pratical. It's always nice to see the cyclist, every time they open that fly trap to say something like presta is better for x y and z and then having to carry an adaptor. Because they pretend that they are important, are always in a rush to do multiple things bad at same time and paying some one else to take care of the equipment. That someone knows they are stupid like bricks and will rip them off and say that the bike is at 100%. Eventually they will go for a ride, be low on pressure and stop at the gas station to pump the tires but wait, the adaptor is gone! It always puts a smile on my face.

@waktosha7378 yeah I think youre under the impression that 1. I don't live in America (i do), and 2. The bikes you see are tubeless (they probablyaren't). Every bike under I'd say around $1000 has innertubes. Technically you could put tubeless tires and wheels on them but usually you wouldn't put +$500 wheels and +$100 tires on a bike like that. At that point it's not even a cheap bike anymore. In summary almost every bike you see is not tubeless and if it is, it's expensive and probably has presta tubeless valves.
