My voice dropped through the floor during puberty. I went back to school after the summer holidays and when I spoke everybody just stared at me. I listen to bass singers that seem to struggle with the lower notes, that is somewhere in the middle of my range. It might be that Men as hunters needed to be able to roar to startle an enemy or scare off other predators, it could also be used as a way to establish dominance by how deep one's voice could get, while women's voices was most likely not as deep to help alert the male of a dangerous presence with a different scream, and tell them that sth is wrong, and perhaps for sexual reasons too?

I was thinking all the other instruments (percussion, keyboard, brasswind, woodwind, orchestrial string family) are all played in a standardised direction regardless of the player's left/right handness, and doesn't matter how symetrical or asymetrical the instrument is. Um, actually, my good lady, and script writer(s), the vocal folds act not like a guitar string, but like the neck of a balloon. Frequency is increased through stretching, not shortening. Not sure why men's voices are deeper: if they truly are longer. Maybe the female vocal folds are tighter/stressed, while the men's are looser/relaxed. Do I get cake now?

Actually helium doesn't affect the pitch of the voice, it affects the medium in which the sound waves bouce around in the vocal tract, producing a different "eq" of the same frequency! I've tested this myself singing "row row row your boat" without and with helium. Same notes, different "resonance" or "eq".

Talking about voices vs musical instruments may remind me about something when it comes to singing voices. I was a deep speaking voice and now I have a light but med range male speaking voice but in singing voice I'm a tenor who started singing as a baritone. If the singing voice is high both in women and in men they would be set to be sopranos and tenors if deeper altos and basses but that's a complex case for mezzos and baritones.

The two main reasons why the male voice is deeper than the female's are hormones and the Adam's apple. The size and thickness of the Adam's apple is usually what depends on how the voice sounds as well as how much of a certain hormone affects the vocal chords. Women usually have smaller and much thinner Adam's apples than men and more estrogen which makes their voices higher. However,some males have small Adam's apples too as well as a little extra estrogen,but they're still thicker than that of the female and have more testosterone. That's why when men decide to become women,they have their Adam's apples shaved down as well as having to take estrogen.

this is very poor video of the differences. It's not only the fundamental tone that makes the differnece since women register only couple semitones up. The real difference is the added tones that shapes the voice since fundamental tone is not something that can speak it self for example sinewave is fundamental, but to add tones to that you get church organs and lots of pipes that add higher and higer tones.
