I disagree that Storm isn’t electricity-based, but it is one of her most well-known attachment of powerset, which tapping into the EM spectrum to manipulate weather.

2:00 Nah, Milestone creators stressed this in multiple documentaries, and interviews, that they wanted “their own Spider-Man” so Static was the response. A geeky, intelligent, witty kid, with electrical abilities experiencing a tough adolescence

Storms powers are Weather Manipulation, but a lot of writers and editors over the years have gotten lazy and overplayed her lightning throwing because it is simpler to wright and draw than other aspects of Weather Manipulation.

I can’t agree with your guest saying that the 3 top black characters has electrical based powers is a lazy attempt. Storm and black lightning was created way back in the day as original characters before anyone else did it. Static as a modern character can be considered lazy.

Static’s creation/powerset isn’t objectively azy though, considering at the time of his creation, Black Lightning’s powers were best described as electrokinetic, while Static’s were described as electromagnetic which allowed him to different feats/uses via his powers that BL hasn’t performed

In my opinion, I think that DC wasn’t really invested in the Milestone property like that, (even though it was a partnership deal) because co-founders like Dwayne McDuffie and Michael Davis were a bit abrasive with DC in terms of content and promotion, as DC themselves were a bit stingy and conservative On top of that since DC has to compensate Milestone creators everytime they use their characters, they started to adopt a more conservative approach and save money instead of go all in on Milestone. Once McDuffie died and the New 52 Static run got nixed, Hudlin and Cowan took it upon themselves to revive the Milestone brand, and eventually ran into a conflict with McDuffie’s wife over rights before relaunching Milestone 2.0 in 2020

Black Vulcan from Superfriends was different as he was he was able to travel through power lines and through time. He just needed a better costume.

I wonder what would happen If they remade Black Vulcan

@@CreativeTakeover-f4i Alex Ross was supposed to do a new Shazam series years ago and in his proposal Vulcan was going to be revamped as a member of The Marvel Family and his powers would be more on the magical side. DC unfortunately chose to pass on it.

It comes down to nuance. Just like how only ONE image of black people is usually presented, they simply don't care to see black speedsters, black technomancers, black telepaths, etc. As for Static, he wasn't one of the big three, nor owned by DC at the time, so they weren't going to make the investment.

Mr. HOLMES you spoke on something very important in regards to how black people see themselves and how others see "us"......not just in the fictional world but the real world as well.

It is odd that so many black superheroes have electrical powers but maybe we are overthinking it. I am not religious but maybe black superhero comics have been touched by the spirit of Shango.

While this was a very interesting and informative video, i just watched another video pointing out that there are approximately 100 or so black superheroes in American comics, and less than 20 have Electricity based powers. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4LRqJ6gpN2Shposi=MEKm--CbMFmWs_Un
