Very true - B.O. is constant and people who have it rarely realise. I once saw someone getting a proper wide berth at a checkout line and they were looking around really suspiciously, they go to the cashier and asked her what was wrong with everyone but - obviously - she couldn't just tell him he stank. I felt so sorry for her, the guy properly reeked, her eyes must have been watering.

simon, thanks for leaving in the part where you lost your composure. made it much more entertaining. as a person who expels more than the average joe (whole family does), i worried about dealing with said issue when i married. met my husband online and only had a brief amount of time together in person before we said i do. we met in a city halfway between our home towns so that those who wanted to attend didn't have to drive the whole 9-10 hours. the day after the wedding, we were driving back to his hometown, just the two of us. it was late october, but he cracked open the window. i thought this odd. then the most horrible odor hit me. 20 years (and many farts later on both parts) he still gets teased about it.

Speaking as someone who was once extremely ticklish - to the point that I could be triggered into a fit of giggles over the phone!! - I can wholly confirm the "panic response" thing. Interestingly, for myself the fear component has grown so much stronger over the years that these days I simply fail to react at all, or become sort of angry-defensive. And, being that I'm getting old I suppose, I can't even have a fit of giggles without some breathing troubles. Meanwhile I learned that, for my son, tickling is literally painful: he has ADHD/Asperger's and the stimulation is not a delicate tickle to him, but something far more intense and very unpleasant. Anecdotal as that may be it's still interesting to connect what I've experienced with these facts. Also, your laugh is infectious sir :D

A lot of this is diet related or even change in diet related. I eat a lot of protein and fibre and my farts are definitely worse to my nose than other people's farts at times, but I am a lot more prone to bad farts if I have made a significant change to my nutritional intake. The one thing that I really can't explain is that I once farted and it smelt really strongly of caramel. Even with the knowledge of it's point of origin, it still smelt really nice. My wife, who is a medical microbiologist, often tells me about various bacteria and yeasts that smell nice, but I don't recall any smelling of caramel.
