Human bodies aren’t built for extreme aging: our capacity is set at about 90 years. But what does aging really mean, and how does it counteract the body’s efforts to stay alive? Monica Menesini details the nine physiological traits that play a central role in aging.

Watching this video made me sad. It reminds me of my mom when I was young she used to be in charge, she was your everyday strict asian mom, she taught me discipline, she was in control. Now I look at her and she turned into a jolly old woman and recently started forgetting things. It pains me to see someone who was a powerhouse loose her skills as years go by. She still has her wisdom but I'm scared of seeing her turn into a helpless old woman. Its like watching her slowly die before my eyes and I can't do anything about it.

I wouldn't be. There is a very real chance that we will have taken care of most age related degeneration within the next 10-15 years I wouldn't be surprised if the are many people today that will live to become 150+ And under that time the science of all this will have evolved more. Maybe enough to postpone aging indefinitely.

I remember my biology teacher in HS saying aging is kind of like you having a VHS and making a copy of it, then making another VHS copy off the first copied VHS, then making yet another copy off the second copied VHS, etc. The quality will get shittier shittier and that's kind of what your cells do as the regeneration process gets poorer and poorer. I think that's what they're talking about at 3:50.

We age because our cells slow down and also stop reproducing. And that happens because we don’t need to live forever, in the perspective of genetic inheritance. The whole point of us being alive is to reproduce. So that’s why we’re not built to live forever. And if our cells did attempt to live forever, we’d just eventually become nothing but tumors and canc. But our bodies make sure to live long enough that we can potentially protect offspring. But anyways all of this doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t. I think scientists should definitely work on enabling people to live forever, and reverse age with doing so.

This tells HOW we age. Not why. I thought this video was going to talk about the reasons why nature ages and why some things don't "like the immortal jellyfish, some bacteria, and plants which can die and revive themselves." Why do humans simply die, when other organism live centuries, nay, forever, unless killed by an outside source. Still a good vid though, but I'd change the title.

Actually I don’t agree, because what are we getting is so enough for us, think about it like some people live a happy life so they don’t want to die and others live sad lives because of the difficulties of life or because they were born in a poor country so they want to die. Actually some people have already suicided because of their bad lives but the death makes all humans equal and it’s the only thing that all humans are equal with it, and we don’t know what is waiting us after this life, maybe another life or heaven or something more interesting 🙂.

It is because we know we are going to die that we try to find purpose in living and living life to its fullest potential. So don't be bummed out about aging because it serves as a reminder of our limited time alive. Also, as we get older, you can say that you replace your physicality with wisdom. It's like an exchange; your body for your mind(except in mental diseases that come with age). As we live and get older, we will learn and experience many things that will eventually add up to our wisdom, which we try to pass on to the next generations. I personally believe that although undesirable, aging is very vital to the human experience.

Our cells can already regenerate part our "lost" telomerases. Stam cells, reproductive cells and cancer cells have the ability to regenerate the telomerases to the orginal full length. But the idea to know that our evolution made the choice not to have the ability to regenerate and thus stop aging. So it is also good to think if it is indeed good to stop aging of we could.
@SocialistSkeptic
@SocialistSkeptic 8 жыл бұрын
YiGzit Telomere degeneration has been a non-issue for most of our evolutionary history because human lifespans rarely reached the point that it was relevant. Evolution didn't "choose" to place a hard limit on our lifespans, if someone were born with a life extending mutation that would allow that person to help rear more successive generations of offspring which would likely be an evolutionary advantage, assuming they retained their health as well. Even past the point of reproductive viability, the elders of a family often play an auxiliary role in supporting family, providing means that they otherwise wouldn't have.

In most cases people used to think of the things that did not happen or are stuck into the memories that had happened. Either in past or in present which is impermanent. Realizing the constant may help us to not age. Constant is Present. Present never dies. Only the past die and the future will die. Realizing NOW may solve the problem of not aging.

If you compare young people and old people you need to compare within the same exercise level and variety. So if young children run around like crazy climb trees roll and tumble scream tickle each other and fight, the old ones need to do the same continuously for 1.5 years, because muscles adapt in 1.5 month but tendons adapt with time constant 6 months. Only then you can truly evaluate.

I'm 19 years old. I am very certain that in the next 50 years we will be able to extend the human life span by 50-100 years. And in the following 50 years even more. Personally, I find that the possibility of eternal life is not to far fetched. I mean, aging is a process that is done through enzymes, hormones and other _regulating_ mechanisms, *actively*. It's not like a car that becomes more and more broken throughtout the years unitl you can't drive it anymore, it's more like a computer that artifically slows itself down by conciously deleting efficient algorithms and replacing them with slower ones. It's a feature that was brought by evolution, like and arm, or our sense of temperature, or our eyes. It is possible to slow it down and even stop it without redesinging the entire human body. I don't want to die. Life as it currently is is cruel compared to what it could be. I don't know what will happen after I die, but I want to live as long as I can - I'll have enough time to enjoy what comes afterwards, if something there is something.

The video failed to look through the perspective of evolution for why we age. Ultimately each individual contribute to the species through passing on genetic information to next generation. Longer life span is not particularly selected for in modern humans, evidenced by the relatively early termination of active reproduction years(human menstrual pause at around 50yrs old). The prolong of human life span can largely be contributed to rapid development of modern medication and improved nutrition. However from the genome structure level our species are really not designed to last a long time. Why is this? One hypothesis is that once an individual passed on genetic information its value to the species is diminished. Thus that individual will still compete with younger individuals for resources. So the natural selection would favor a mechanism that can eventually disable the individual. This programmed death hypothesis in one of the interesting theories in the field of biogerontology. In layman's terms: each generation introduce possible mutation for natural selection to work on, however the usefulness of that generation ends with the end of reproduction capability. Biomedical augmentation and genome/epigenome reprogramming can prolong the life span of human up to 200 yrs maybe. However to be truly immortal in organic form we would have to design human species from the ground up with longevity, instead of reproduction, as the ultimate core.
