The idea of them having to wake up every 15 minutes to breathe gives me anxiety. Imagine living underwater and being able to drown, those whales are in living hell 😂
@dukenukem44473 жыл бұрын
@@blitheringrando1410 It doesn't sound so bad to me; I imagine sleeping in the ocean would be tremendously comfortable (if I was a whale) because the temperature would be nice and you're just floating so no waking up with a sore back/neck and even though you do not have the relative safety of your own nest the oceans of the world are staggeringly large and among all the known species in them, very few have the potential to threaten whales. As for needing oxygen, it's not such a limitation and I would think the risk of accidentally drowning would be slim indeed if you had evolved to sleep that way. I don't know how long whales can hold their breath but I see no reason for them to risk running out of air by waiting until the last moment before going for more, the point being, if they surface every ten to fifteen minutes to breathe I imagine they could go half an hour or more on the same amount of air. I take a breath about every eight or so seconds but I can comfortably hold my breath for sixty seconds, ninety seconds if I wish but I feel it and longer if I need too. I have no idea but I am guessing whales are the same.

I remember when I was in the army (Finland), and we had a training camp, we went on for a week with about three hours of sleep a night - and often not continuous - we had to stay up for two watches a night, one to watch the fire in the stove that heated the tent, and one outside in a pothole as a guard. (And they would sometimes stage nighttime raids on our position. During the day we had training, and a lot of marching and going through the forest. The last night we had a four hour night march through the forest in our gear, and I actually was nodding off while marching. I was also hallucinating weird things. I swear I saw a dressing cabinet in the forest, in the middle of nowhere. 😂 After the march, in the morning, we packed into troop transport trucks (generally very uncomfortable), and I slept soundly all the way back to the barracks, crouched on the floor packed in with other soldiers.

LOL just like horses I used to sleep standing up back when I was in the Navy 40 years ago. I was a boiler technician. When I would stand something called burner watch (it was in the deepest part of the ship, the lowest level) anyway most of the time you were tired as hell and I would actually stand up ,feet spread about shoulders Legnth apart , perfectly balanced to the rocking motion of the ship. Lock my knees and fall into a light sleep. The steel deckplates made alot of noise when someone was walking around on them and you just knew by how loud the noise was if they were walking above you of were on your level. When you heard that certain sound you just opened your eyes and stood there. If it was a chief or someone above you in rank they would walk by you and I would just smile & say hello. The second you heard them walking away you shut your eyes again and repeat if necessary. It wasn't a deep sleep obviously but it helped.alot of guys did it.

I’m sure the saying “Let sleeping dogs lie” because some young dogs can become bewildered when transition from dream to wake happens. They are dreaming of chasing or being chased by something, and your 6 year old child suddenly wakes them the dog can sometimes cause damage to you or a child out of pure reflex. The best way to wake a dog is to cook food.
@TampaDave3 жыл бұрын
wikilcontainments There may be other explanations for the phrase's origin, but I would suggest a phrase with more importance, should one be in the position. "Let sleeping bears lie." Or, for those who don't care about spelling: "Led slipping beers lye". [Notice spellcheck loves it].

My cat made a nightmare one time. I was seeing her moving weirdly, I wake her up, she react like her life was in danger. But she get her cool back after a few seconds and purr to me. So yeah, they can make the difference between dream and reality. This is obvious to me.
@talyn39323 жыл бұрын
Yep. The fact that they don't randomly become afraid of otherwise loving human companions says it all. If they can dream, they can have bad dreams. If a cat were unable to distinguish a bad dream where their humans were mean to them, and reality, they would start acting like an abused animal for no reason. Also, purring isn't always contentment. its used mostly for self soothing.

Owls: "I'm cute while sleeping" Sea Otters: *"W E L L...."*
@EyeSeeThruYou2 жыл бұрын
The owlets sleep in that position in the nest to hide their presence from other species which might attack them while the parents are out of the nest hunting. Mother and father will defend the nest and remain on it till fledgling. But then, they may both be away from the nest at the same time to hunt and stretch because the chicks are old enough to be alone for short periods. This makes the owlets more vulnerable, so sleeping in ylthat position may be a defense tactic against predators (other owls, hawks, eagles, etc). Locking talons and then laying along the branch also helps conceal their presence from other animals.

I had a fish called big boy (silver carp) and he used to love sleeping on the top of the pond. He would swim onto this little bit of rock that formed a small shelf in the pond. If the weather was sunny you could always find him baking. I knew he was sleeping despite fish not having eyelids as I would have to call him a few times before he would suddenly start moving and swim to me. Fish are smarter than they seem and can learn their names. He always came when I called for a nose boop, so I have no doubt whatsoever he was asleep. He would do this all the time and at first I thought he was dead before I realized it was just his thing.

Yes, and my gold fish made friends with each other and swam around the pool as buddies, ignoring the poor little fan-tailed fish whose movements were not so swift or graceful. The same selfishness or loving attitudes, the same loneliness and bullying....God made all conscious creatures to participate in the same reality of what it means to be alive and to know others. Some animals and probably some fish do a lot better job than the rest of us on these issues.

I’ve been raising miniature schnauzers for almost 10 years. Puppies even a day old dream just like adult dogs, and they move like CRAZY when dreaming 😂 They pretty much twitch and kick (also suckle, bark, whine, etc) nonstop while sleeping and it gets less dramatic the older they get. So basically the younger the puppy the crazier the dream I guess 🤣

What do you mean by raising? Do you breast feed them? Or did you mean breed them, which is basically pimping out an unwilling animal for profit. Not to mention it’s terrible for the mother. Don’t buy from breeders people!!

Wow, I'm always learning something I never thought of like how whales sleep. That was almost mesmerizing so see them under water upright. I do know when I took a river boat cruise, our cabin was under the water line. I slept so good and deep moving underwater except when we went through the locks. But they tried not to do that at night. But, think about it, humans begin as water beings before we are born, so it made sense to me that fetuses must sleep very well, and being under water may have brought that back.
