Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I worked 25ish years in Veterinary medicine. The blatant stupidity and down right cruelty of some people never ceases to amaze me. I've come to work in the morning and found dogs tied to our clinic door, dogs brought in to board and never picked up, puppies closed up in a box and left somewhere. I have no idea what motivates these people. I once had an entire home full of unwanted cats and dogs. Thank you for helping them.

Some people are beyond desperate and feel like they have no choice but to abandon. My brother was at a shelter the other day and a gentleman brought in a box of 6 puppies that were refused... he had nowhere to place them and the shelter wouldn't take them... he even tried to leave the box but couldn't in this 100 degree heat. When my dad had cancer and we were struggling we tried calling shelters and noone would help us, we had 2 dogs with 2 sets of litters one had 8 the other 6 and noone would take them. We eventually drove out to the country and had a sign and gave a few away but it was the most stressful time for us. Not to justify someone's actions for abandoning an animal but when no shelter will take them you feel so desperate you pray they are rescued. My brother still has one that has even bitten his wife and son but what else can you do. Extremely heartbreaking thank you for all of you who work so hard to find homes for those precious pets.

I’m so glad those puppies were found by you. Growing up in a small town, my family had a small 4 acre fenced in property. We ended up with puppies tossed over our fence occasionally. Poor babies. We kept 3 over the years and found homes for others. Best dogs we ever had. The thing is, the people that do that, they have no idea if the animal is going to survive. They just discard them like trash. It’s awful.

I am a foster with a Maternity Rescue. We take in mostly pregnant or nursing moms and their litters that are abandoned. It is amazing to see how the dogs, especially the mama dogs really understand what we have done for them. We give them a safe place to raise their babies, all the necessary medical care and get them fixed and in loving homes. It is a LOT of work, but it is the best work! Those puppies were lucky that the person who dumped them chose your barn. It could have been a terrible outcome, but you gave them a chance at a wonderful life! You did a great job!

Thank you for doing that for those babies. I lived on a farm on 10 acres out in the boonies and I had dogs and cats dropped off on the property multiple times. One morning I heard a car around 4 a.m. and went out to find a tiny kitten stuck up in my weeping willow tree. Eyes not even open yet. It was a good thing i am awake that early because it would have fallen out and probably died. He was a tiny fluffy golden boy who I kept and named Pooh. Another time someone drove by and in the middle of the night in a severe thunderstorm, opened their car door and dropped out 2 kittens that had just barely opened eyes. I took them in (but kept away from my animals) bottle fed them then took them to a vet the next day for a check-up. No diseases or parasites fortunately, so I kept them too and named them Rhodhri and Cynan. I've also kept a couple of the dogs that were dropped off and named them Dakotah and Morgana.I have to wonder at the kind of person that can just abandon an animal like that. Just one more reason I prefer animals to people.

We just had a litter of 6 kittens dumped on our church porch Saturday night a week ago. We took them home overnight and then took them back to church on Sunday morning. Luckily our members stepped up and gave them all homes. We had taken the pregnant mama cat and the dog with birth defects home the last 2 times they were dumped at the church. This is why I have 4 dogs and 7 cats. I just couldn't do any more. The last puppy my husband brought home infected our other dogs with kennel cough even though they were vaccinated.

Right? How selfish of the dumper to put them so in danger WILLINGLY! I mean,. coyotes! Yeah, I live rurally and there are so many feral cats around... One adopted us (cuz she was starving) and she is a beloved member of the family with our two GSDs... Our male is much like Bear in temperament but the female is still very much a puppy. I'm 68 and these are the first dogs I've had since the early 70s (when I was a vet tech) that I haven't sterilized but only because the male is such a Love and has great breeding and a super personality so there are already 4 people who want pups. Then she will be spayed. It's interesting how differently they behave when they aren't spayed or neutered. I had forgotten that. Our male is such a gentleman, though so we did well through her first heat - in spite of the female being cranky. She WILL get spayed. Definitely helps calm them! I will NOT be dumping any puppies!

💔 ppl dump cats on our road a lot too. Found one with a jar stuck to his head cuz he was presumably hungry and looking for food and it haunts me to this day. Ppl are so fucked up. Thanks for looking out for the innocent critters out there.

Bless you for saving them. I live rural too. I am overwhelmed by cats. Mine are all spayed and neutered. However, I can't afford to spay and neuter all that "find" my house. People can be so cruel. Thank you for helping those babies. I love your heart.

My hubby never remembers having to buy a dog growing up. They always had drop offs. We currently have the sweetest Border Collie mix that showed up at our ranch in 2019, hungry and scared. He was afraid of men, trucks and a running water hose. Now he loves to ride with hubby, but the hose is still an issue. Breaks my heart that people can be so cruel, but I'm so glad our Shep found us. He has been a great blessing to our family.

Ben's wide-eyed innocence is so endearing. Oh to live in a world where on random days puppies just turn up out of nowhere.

Your family is the best! Our family has gone through this same experience so many times. So proud of how well your boys dealt with this. Our largest orphan was a donkey we found tied to our front porch. Thank you for opening your home to us all.
