Love graffiti and I enjoy your work. I love looking up rolling stock by number to see if the real one has any tags. If it’s not too crazy I will try to emulate it onto the model. It’s fun and challenging. Keep up the great work.

What I find amazing is graffiti done with spray can paint. Some can be really sharp.

I completely agree with you. I model modern day Brooklyn and I knew graffiti would be a must. I haven't got anywhere near enough but it is there. Keep them coming mate.

I remember as a kid and getting ho model packs that came with graffiti stickers for the rolling stock and buildings

See your point. I purposely model the early 1970s so I can have relief from tagging. Others can choose what their wallet says. It's their layout, their business.

I'm glad to hear you use the word " Vandalized". Also glad to hear you say right off the hop " Modern era". I live in canada. Unless you are getting paid to paint a mural, And you're just painting a bunch of scribbles down the wall I can guaran-dam-tee There's a dude with a bucket and roller painting over what you just put up before your paint is even dry😂. Can't remember the movie, But they painted an alleyway with graffiti to make it look like new york, And garbage everywhere. They came back after lunch and all the garbage was gone and the graffiti had been painted over😂😂😂 Some people Say this is an urban legend, But I'm old enough to remember seeing it in the news. It was funny AF!😅😂😂😂

I appreciate what every modeler brings to the table with their creation, but I do tend to 'follow' modelers of modern railroads that do have some form of graffiti because as you say it's a reality. It's almost like a litmus test for me. Great layouts with no tags can be referential for techniques.. But to me, great modern layouts with tags tend to observe details a little better. And their layouts have a more realistic story too. I'm always for the story.

Totally agree with your statement. Don’t have to paint gang symbols. Can’t read most of it anyway. But it is Art. There is a talent to creating shapes and colors used. Doesn’t have to be on everything, just a few pieces work. You have some SIC skills! Keep up the awesome work. Go Army! 🤣

This is a very interesting topic for discussion. Love it or hate it, almost everyone has an opinion about it. Graffiti, when you think about it, has been around for a while. I suppose, on the earlier end of my scrolling era, I should at least do something to suggest the messages hoboes left on the water tank. When I went to school (60's-early 70's) in a rural community, there was always a crazy man willing to climb the municipal water tower with a can of spray paint, but that was about the extent. What there was in general was expressive but not very artistic. For the most part, small towns in my area are still relatively free from graffiti. Most graffiti here is imported on railcars, so the more modern ones I have will eventually receive some graffiti. Otherwise (with the possible exception of the water tower) my layout will be pretty much free from graffiti.

I completely agree with you. One of the first things he said was depending on era. If you're modeling the late 1800s.Early 19 hand start putting up graffiti and tagging everything.You're going to look ridiculous. And you're quite right, I'm modeling seventies to eighties and rural Areas, you're gonna have a hard time finding graffiti.

I completely agree with you. Only thing I wont put it on is the Amtrak auto train. Ive seen that train 100 times and theres never any graffiti on it.

HEY! I'm an old dude and graffiti is just the reality of things. But I have to tell ya, although the rolling stock that runs through our town is tagged, there is very little on adjacent buildings. In fact, the most graffiti you'll find in town is on one particular mill that is isolated from heavy traffic. There is literally none in the town center or the rail corridor through downtown... I know... It's an anomaly, but when you consider when I moved to this state 40 years ago the closest thing to graffiti you'd find was the names of some cross-eyed lover carved on a park bench, it makes more sense... Something else to consider is just how many proto-typical layouts have you seen on KZbin where they haven't even weathered the trains or rolling stock! People are gonna do what people wanna do and when it comes to an individual's layout it's all a matter of choice. It's a big country, not everyone's from an urban area...

Agreed - you can't have prototypical if you're not capturing weathered and graffiti-ed rolling stock and buildings. At the same time, i have no interest in promoting it so i won't take a specific tag and use it even though there's plenty of real-life examples available. working in n scale is also a little more challenging to recreate actual tags and it's not something i'm interested in spending time doing - so off-the-shelf decals work fine enough to set an urban feel where appropriate.

I’ll apologize for this lengthy comment. I recently had this debate within myself on if I should or shouldn’t tag graffiti on my Railcars. Now, complete transparency on my part. I’m a Rivet and any down to the very detail type of guy, that is a modern day modeler. I have nearly 5,000 Railcars, no lie, over 20 years of collecting. And for the past 5-10 years, it went from 1,200 to what it is now. I hate, graffiti and for some reason it has seriously been annoying me lately. Maybe it’s because I’m constantly seeing brand new cars tagged in passing trains and the GMC plant by where I stay, every Autorack that comes in and out are tagged. It’s insane!!! But… it is as you say, reality/realism. So, I said I would tag some cars (one side only) and if it bothers me that much. I’ll just turn it to the other side. Then, I said no graffiti at all on the Railcars, only heavy and light weathering. I’ll put graffiti on the walls and buildings, but I just can’t stand it on Railcars because it has gotten out of hand. Maybe I’ll change my mind later, but right now, I just can’t do it. I hate it that much. And the Prairie Shadows, Aurora, ScaleTrains, Tangent, Athearn Genesis, ExactRail, Atlas, and Walthers that I have gone crazy in purchasing. The stuff is just too nice and I don’t want to cover the details of the cars. Sorry 🤷🏽.

Hi Maestro, just noticed your concrete wall seems to have a little bit of a bow on it. Was that caused by painting the concrete effect on the one side or, is there something under it ? If it was caused by painting one side, would applying paint on the other side and weighing it down help? Your artwork is terrific

Thanks and it's bowing due to the curve of the tracks. I just adhered the wall to the risers in that slight curve.

It tend to lean towards slightly sci fi railroading, I model steam but with ideas the may not have been realistic, such as a steam powered logging mech, if I was modeling modern equipment I would have to do it in an apocalyptic scene, so super heavy weathering, over growth, and old faded graffiti all over like it probably would be.

I don't know anyone who puts gundam on their railroad and is able to make it work well🙂. Graffiti or not to graffiti, find your model railroad path and make it great for you. Were I live (small town) there's no graffiti until I get close to the BNSF yard or see cars going to or from the yard. For your next video lets see your engine and car roster. I do On3 so no graffiti.

Not a rivet counter or prototyping, so I choose no graffiti especially when it defaces private property. But correct, if a prototyping rivet counter, graffiti would be accurate.

Would you say I should add graffiti if my era is around 1970 to 1980 I run steam and diesel I feel like graffiti wasn't as prevalent in that era but wanted your thoughts

Nawwww, man, it's YOUR layout, mine has just a touch or sprinkle of it mostly because, I like just run'n Trains and taking photos like ART photos making it not always a drone shot. I grew up around trains 70s,80s,90s etc. So I leave it to the creators. Those old farts, let them BE. I do it for my own Art, My Canvas, My Museum, because dammit... I'm good and confident in what I build and how I take photos to inspire others. Yet I do admire other artist. My favs are Norman Rockwell, and more. I took years of advanced ART classes where each artist had their style, their Canvas, and they were super good. Some of them I even competed against in Nationals... and you know what... That was OK. So, I don't get caught up in what some judge will say or opinionated. I have heard some DOOZIES over time for ART competition judges... While some I took time to take to heart, and got better with my particular craft, whether it be colored pencil, water color, or dioramas (I won my first diorama contest in 3th grade btw) .. won it again in 5th grade simply because I had a model railroading skill. My 5th grade teacher actually taught us Grafitti bubble letters in the early 80s Yah, bro I hear ya... I admire your style as fellow artist... Just like we were in those Honors ART classes where we learn from each other. #learnfromeachother Hell... if farts want to argue... what the heck is a STEAM ENGINE doing the track with a modern diesel... maybe because it's a History Museum layout like mine ✊🏽. So I don't care... My strength is, if you can take a better visual shot... then my dudes, knock yourself out Tonto, is what I say to rivet counters. By the way, I DO see them mimic my style even though they don't want to admit, BUT THATS OK, we learn from each other on our ART canvas. Go to YOUR strength... To me Prototypical is like that word from princess bride "INCONCEIVABLE", I don't think it means what you think it means! 😅 same with word "Prototypical" The way I see it.... if I had an epitaph "My Art/craft is real enough to make you stare longer than a minute, but I made yah look.
