As someone who has worked in advertising for the past 10 years I can tell you that Papa John's Pizza controversy was actually intentional NOT by Wonyoung but by Papa John's themselves and the ad agency in charge of making it. The whole point is to go viral and clearly they were well aware of the strawberry controversy of Wonyoung and wanted to capitalized on that fact so they instructed her to eat that pizza in that fashion in order to create controversy and guess what it worked as everyone is talking about Wonyoung eating Papa John's Pizza. And that was the whole point.

Ok, I don't hate her but sometimes I feel like her company is making her act extra pretty and cute. Sometimes she kills it but sometimes it just looks weird and forced... I hope whoever is making her do it, the company or herself, realizes it and tones it down... Edit: I just wished she put more energy into her vocals and dance not into looking pretty all the time for fans. Her vocals are pretty good. And she does moderately well in dancing. Wonyoung was a maknae back in Izone era, so everyone protected her from the hater. Now, she is not maknae anymore. She needs to understand how much pressure she can get to stand in the center of the group. Being the center, it means more spot light, more fame, more popular, but at the same time it’ll be more hate. Everyone already knew that she’s beautiful but her vocal or her dancing skill is something. For a 5 years idol, I think people expect more than just visual. Looks at Sakura, she got so many criticism for her vocal. At least, she put a lot of effort to improve it, but in Wonyoung case, people don’t see that effort. Starship ent should know better what public want from her, but they ignore it. It feels like Starship try to play with fire to gain popular for IVE. Wonyoung is a victim of poor management or poor marketing plan.

I don't think it makes sense for people to say that she's hated just because she's a "visual queen" or because she's pretty. Every gen has had a visual queen. From Sung Yuri, to Yoona to Irene or Jisoo, but none of them got the amount of hate that Wonyoung does and I think a large part of it is because of the persona that we all see. None of us know how she really is behind closed doors, so I don't want to say that her personality is bad. But there are definitely things that she does that is slowly annoying kpop fans. From very obviously rushing past Gaeul and other members to get the center position in pics, to not bowing properly to idols on MuBank, to the overdoing of expressions that don't seem genuine. Additionally, Starship stays setting her up by consistently giving her the best outfits or more lines in IVE's songs over the groups main vocalist. The mixture of it all is slowly making people look at Wonyoung in a bad light. Which was never the case for previous "visual queens". Speaking for myself too. I used to adore Wonyoung and never understood the negativity around her. But recently, I see myself losing more and more interest in her because her personality just isn't that desirable to watch anymore for me. International fans make up a large portion of kpop fans as a whole. And recently, idols with easy going, humble and humorous personalities are drawing more fans. If Starship or Wonyoung don't change, I don't see Wonyoung being as hyped in the future as she is now. Edit: there are over 70 damn replies here. That's what it means to be a celebrity. Getting the public attention, being it good or bad. Celebrities are not normal people like you and me. Being in the showbiz, means you are seeking attention, living off it. Those who commit s, usually are the ones hitting rock bottom, and mostly fame related, and have empty lives to compensate for that. She is now at the peak of her career and she seems enjoying it fully. She also can anytime just change a couple of things, and she will be totally ignored by haters, but that also means losing one big way of getting massive exposure. In wonyoung's case is definitely something professional. If you look at it, it's just an accumulated bunch of silly things. Its the amount and continuation that's triggering people. Ex: there are instances where i see a fandom calling out someone disrespectful toward their favorite artist, it happens all the time. One slip or misunderstanding or whatever, but it doesn't really happen again, and it's already forgotten. Wonyoung isn't helping her case, cause it happens again and again and again... If i'm a father and my kid looking up to someone like wonyoung, so how am i supposed to teach him manners without being hateful towards her? To prove she isn't the normes and what/how should one behave. Wonyoung is a prime example of what can happen if you debut children. Since I*ZONE, Wonyoung has been praised for her looks, tho she also got praised for her personality, this was bc she was a child and knew how to "let loose" and be a child. Wonyoung has always had pretty visuals, Her I*ZONE members, her management and probably even normal non kpop people has said that she looks gorgeous, so as a kid, naturally, you will of follow what gives you the best benefit or what makes the adults around you happy, which is to show how pretty she is. Wonyoung has been in training since she was 13, getting told that her visuals are pretty and that she should keep looking pretty, getting directed in how she can look her prettiest on camera. now she's 18, only barely reached adulthood, and all her childhood life she's been guided in how to look her best at almost every angle, so naturally, as this praise and encouragement hasn't stopped, she can now detect herself on how she can look her prettiest for the camera. just look at the strawberry scene, she makes glances at litterally every camera when taking the bite of the strawberry before actually biting down on it fully. As a child you would mostly follow what the older people told you to bc you were a child, now that she's an adult, she sees how happy it makes her company to see her looking pretty, so ofc she continues to do so. its a very natural response to have in a work enviroment. Wonyoung is hyperfixated and aware of how she looks, bc of how she was brought up being in the spotlight at SUCH a young age. I don't blame Wonyoung for her bahaviour, I blame all the adult people around her for brainwashing her into thinking that all people care about is her looks. I really hope Wonyoung realizes that people will love her just as much even if she "let's her guard down" for a bit. as a former Wiz*one, I miss Wonyoung's playful energy. yes she was a child in I*ZONE but the playfulness she had wasn't ONLY bc she was young. And now in IVE Her spark is slowly fading away bc of her hyperfixation on looking pretty. Regardless of anything, you should always choose to ignore an idol rather than hating her, if some idol is not giving you the vibe you need, no need to bash her, she certainly don't deserve that. I stop being a kpop fan for a while now and I don't know if hating real people had become an ok thing in kpop fandom,but my god why is an 18 year old getting so much hate. Her being the center,having so many commercials and always being pretty is obviously her company's idea and project. Wonyoung managed to become the centre and one of the most popular members of a super successful group,which basically meant a lot of possible profit for her company,so they decided to exploit her. Wonyoung became popular in the industry from a very young age,which probably resulted into a attention issue,where Wonyoung doesn't feel comfortable when she doesn't receive attention or something,and now her company makes her do a lot of activities,they minimised the practices, because she would still be successful even with flaws,and basically made her the face of dark side of kpop: an exploitated kid, who have attention issues and who is obsessed with look,being the most hated person in the industry because of the unfairness and clear favoritism.

I don’t think that there is only one reason why she gets so much hate. To me, there are a couple of reasons. 1, people who generally are jealous of her. I mean she is really pretty and popular. So no wonder that some people don’t like her. 2, she doesn’t really let lose. You can see that she tries really hard to be perfect at al times. This can come across as someone who tries to be “pick me” 3, she is pushed by the company. This can create some problems. Especially, amongst the fans. I'm not a fan or hater of Ive or Wonyoung in particular but I agree with you mostly about points 2 and 3. I really loved the video for Eleven and played it so much because it seemed more balanced than all their new videos. It's really number 2 and 3 for me. It's not about being pretty. Lisa is really pretty but she does not have the behaviour of 2 and wasn't being pushed by the company. So she got the reputation of overcoming adversity and being genuine/can laugh at herself. When you're an idol you always have to be wary of cameras and you have to keep that perfect image up at all times. And it's not just her most idols never show their true selves in front of the camera. Some even have specific personas they have to act like in front of fans and cameras. Idols can't act human if fans don't stop treating them like objects and hating on them when they make a single mistake or do something they dislike. Like the strawberry and pizza thing with Wonyoung humans are all unique so we do some things in different ways. Wonyoung ate the strawberry the way she wanted to and people are hating on her because it's not the way that they wanted her to eat it like. If she was ever gonna act like herself she probably won't now because of the constant stream of hate she gets for everything.

Honestly, I’m really worried for her mental health. She’s always been strong and positive. Regardless of all the hate she gets, she still worked hard and puts on a smile, she’s a really strong person. But she’s obviously seen the comments about her. And that’s exactly what she’s doing-Advertising. The way that she eats may be cringy, but the amount of hate she gets for it is entirely unnecessary. If your so pissed off by her eating, just don’t watch..? The solution is simple. People criticize everything she does, it’s like they’re looking for a reason to hate her. I did research a bit about the Bowing culture in Korea, but I’m not Korean, so I won’t make any comment on her bowing or not bowing. I believe that anyone who’s not Korean shouldn’t comment about it either, because we haven’t lived their like they did, we don’t know how the culture works, so it’s not our place to comment. Im not a fan nor an anti, i just happen to see the topic popping up again and again and took interest. Without all the small things being taken out of context and stuff, its quite simple: Times are changing. Someone else wrote it here too. The times where an idol thats always picture perfect and trying so hard to be flawless is generally liked are over. People want to see flaws and want to see more "realism" and authenticity, and groups delivering that are quite successful and liked for it these days. And im here for it, its about time. I do think wonyoung is a bit of a try hard but this that said, i think it’s more like starship making sure she garners attention because she is their star idol. Plus add to the fact that she has been an idol from the age of 13, she probably has an altered way of thinking because she knows that where ever she goes there will be a camera on her at all times. On the topic of the eating thing, I remember watching a clip of izone and it was pointed out that whenever they eat, it seemed that they were only allowed a bite or 2 on camera to avoid the girls from really chowing down and to take that into consideration and probably how starship is most likely hammering home to her that her image is everything and that she needs to be seen as perfect because they are inventing a lot into her, that’s where I personally think this “cringy” behavior comes from. I feel like a lot of this behavior is like how cube treated hyuna and 4minute. They made the group about her and barely gave the other girls attention. Ultimately i feel bad for her because i don’t think she’s able to show much of her real self because she’s forced to care about her public image whenever there is a camera on her especially because at the end of the day, she’s still a young teenager.

Ofc she has issues and aspects she can work on and should work on for her own good, but this overbearing schedule and spotlight doesn't give people the time to mature and grow, or to even sit, rest and make introspection. For me, is silly to compare her to other people, about how they can handle their schedules better or whatnot, because they are they and she is she. None of those mentioned started working at the age of 14 (maybe Mark? Idk, he's worked a lot tho), none of them faced their growth in front of the 📷 with such spotlight and requirements (ofc all of them have had their own struggles too), so you cannot judge her with the same eyes as others. Let's respect everyone's individual journey. Anyway, she already has those situations inside her, and looking for that (attention) even more, it's prolly not the best idea for her, because just look at this, people hates on her more and more. What is that going to cause in her mind? Idk. That's why the most popular members always try to be as lowkey as possible with their own groups, because they know it can cause troubles in different areas, or sometimes they do it in consideration to others. But being capable to do that, well, it requires certain perspective and understanding of situations. Wonyoung has that? We don't know. I feel like people constantly forget how we grow, how we mature, and how we learn and change. Just because she's growing in front of the 📷, it doesn't mean that she should have everything solved. Many netz (especially int), don't like her and keep pushing her over and over again, which is quite violent and well, that's how her Industry works I guess , but I sincerely hope she'll be resilient enough to overcome this, without falling in self-harm or and ED, etc. I also hope she can rest so her mental health and body can stay in a good condition or gets better. I feel that there are many people who are so judgamental about her (however there is also some logical criticism as well) and I also think if she doesn't rest enough, maybe she'll feel more and more desperate so will start making more silly things that will be considered more than mistakes, and will bring her more unnecessary wrath. Maybe it's true that Wonyoung is getting obsessed about getting attention, we don't know, and this is the biggest thing we have to admit. Since we don't know what the truth is, why are we rushing to attack or disapprove her? And I don't want to start with the lazy thing, I do believe she can improve about her politeness with her seniors for example, that's super easy (that's what her country expects from her) or with people she works with, but about her energy that's just so dumb to ask for at the moment, she's overworked and has lost so many weight. Ok, others can, good, but obviously she's struggling a lot to do everything she has in front. But let me ask? How much of her opinion and voice is relevant in this situation? Is she capable to say, for whatever reason (maturity, mental conscience, or the freedom and respect the agency gives her), "hey, I'm not feeling well, I need a rest, I want to quit this and that"? Man, that's something that even adults cannot do sometimes, and moreso because as i said, she's too exigent with herself. She needs help from someone who cares about her, to show her a healthier path for her, but if your agency and management doesn't help u because you're the main money maker + your society values and praises the most being overworked and making a lot of money, how challenging it could be for her to face it? Imo Taeyong is a good example of this, currently he's facing (once again) pain in his waist (?), something he's talked about several times, SM said they would take care of him and his treatment, but despite that, his pain has came back several times. NCT choreos doesn't help either, he being the leader and the spotlight he has in the group and the crazy movements he has to do, it doesn't help. And lastly, if he didn't talked about it, probably SM wouldn't have said anything either, because he himself had to talk about it in order to get some attention. He even had to be absent in schedules and a concert because of his pain, and well, then SM thankfully said something about it, but u can tell he's still in a bad condition because once again his pain is back. I feel empathy for Wonyoung, because her situation and work gives her something, but as well takes important things off from her. Maybe she should have debuted alone or with a team with Yujin? Even tho I love Rei, Liz, Lesseo, etc., would her own group have achieved the same success without her and Yujin? Would there has been as many people paying attention to the group as there are now? Well, I guess it doesn't matter. On the other side, I think that, without solid proofs about the dynamic in the group (being akward or silent ofc are signals, about what, we don't know 100%) and their genuine feelings about the situation (even tho there have been bits of information), is so dumb to conclude over this. To say that she's the source of the discomfort of others or that she's the source of why other members are losing their self-confidence, etc. Unless she's abusing someone, others have the responsability of taking care of themselves and their self steem. Having said that, the other members have their own struggles as well, all of them are learning how to get along and to work as a team, all of them are still growing and changin too. My point is that people can not blame 100% their feelings on other people, because we are free, capable to decide what we can do under several situations. Since they are still young, I believe all of them with the right support and guidence, can learn how to have better and healthier interactions. Imho, the main problem relies with the agency's management. Ok, you're seeing all this, that something is not working with your group, why don't u send all of them to therapy in order to articulate a better atmosphere for them, or put some attention and work from your people to develop a better atmosphere, etc. But heck no, how can we expect that from a company who's overworking a young girl since years ago, just for the sake of money? Who's taking advantage of her insecurities and weak and frail sides just to make her more valuable for their own business? A lot of people keep attacking her, but if she's really doing all that, fighting with everyone or acting in certain ways for unhealthy reasons, then people should consider asking the agency to take better care of her, instead of attacking her more Why? Because she's so young, she still has so many opportunity areas, chances of growing, of changing, and maturing. She is someone who started working at the age of 14, imagine what that can do to your mind? Geez, if she reaches her adulthood and still being a brat, abusing people, being violent, or something like that, ofc she'll have to be accountable for that, if she does serious mistakes or actions now, she'll have to be accountable too no matter her age. BUT, if she's facing changeable things that alright, are not the most pleasing, we can be empathic and encourage her to change, or to ask why she's doing that or feels the need to. This argument has also a time limit, some years in the future, Wonyoung won't longer have this leniency, so I'd love if she can relax a bit. That probably would be better for her, because then she can stops this cicle of "trying to hard", because maybe she'll see that there are people who care and like her just because she is she. It's ok to breath, to take one day at a time. She also got a way more relaxing and fun time in iz*one because she wasn't the face of the group, she didn't have that many responsabilities, there was a way richer range of personalities and experiences, her activities were always supported by one of more teammates, and many of the unnies gave her guidance. Now in IVE she doesn't have that and has to learn and adapt.
