I love this. While we took wolves and said 'We're gonna domesticate and use you for stuff', cats were going 'ehhhhh, you've got something I want, I'm moving in, please carry in my bags.'
@summonerstripclub48406 жыл бұрын
nope actually all domestic animals eventually decided to stick around because it benefited them someway & they met the criteria of having a social structure that humans can take the lead in, being calmer, breeding & eating in captivity etc etc it was more of "you've got food, shelter & a safe place for my babies, I'm moving in/sticking around" with them all & that's why deer unfortunately will never really be domesticated & it kinda bums me out
@ericwininger17786 жыл бұрын

Cats actually domesticated themselves. They hung around where humans becasue humans were storing grain. Humans decided having the cats around to hunt pests like mice, rats, scorpions, etc., so they started feeding the cats. But cats started it. The common house cat (regardless of breed) descended from the Asian Desert Cat. Cool huh?
@summonerstripclub48406 жыл бұрын
Laura you mean the African Wild Cat (though there may be a domestic cat breed in china that actually hails from an Asian wild cat line instead) anyway again that's how all domestication works, you can not just force animals into domestication, the animals have to meet a very specific criteria & only a handful of species in the world meet it
@hadassahmonique21345 жыл бұрын
Cats only have started being domesticated heavily (in the US) within the last 100 years. Mostly they were used for "Pest Control" before then. If only my cats did their job instead of looking at them. I would imagine because cats are....cats, it's taking a little bit longer to instill "loyalty" in them.

As far as I know, dogs and cats started out not as pets, but utility. Dogs were used for protection. Cats as well, but with rodents and snakes. Cats were raised as "gods" or respected because they were kept to keep snakes away from the home. Dogs had the function of helping humans hunting. These animals have always been, as a result, at close proximity with humans, so I think it isn't a great leap of logic that people would connect more with the animals we kept in our house and always with us to hunt in comparison to the animals kept outside in pens or in the fields.

I saw an Ancient Egypt exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum several years ago that had a recreation of a mural showing a pharoah (I think one of the Rameses?) hunting in a chariot with his dogs. The dogs all had names that translated as things like “Swift Runner” or “Good Hunter”… except for the one lying in the chariot next to the Pharoah, whose name was translated as “Useless.” The placard said this was arguably the first record in history to depict a domestic animal kept for companionship.

When the Spanish explorers arrived in Central America they wrote about being shocked by how doting people were toward dogs. Towns had stray dogs which had no particular home, but they were loved by the community and well cared for. Not sure of the breed. There's also a very old type of hairless dog in Central and South America (smallish, fat, and hideously adorable) which was used primarily as a pet, but also for magical healing purposes (it's likely that having the dog nestled on a sick person acted like a heat pack, made people feel happier and lowered stress, thus aiding in healing, so the belief in their magical healing properties probably grew from there). So "magical healing" is another distinct purpose for domestication to add to hunting and other animal "jobs." They were also occasionally a food source depending on the era. And then in the Peruvian Andes many Pre-Columbian cultures kept guinea pigs as both food and pets (i.e. pets that you would eventually eat). As with the hairless dogs, the line between pet and food was a little blurry, possibly because these food animals weren't kept in pens at an emotional distance the way modern farming takes place, but rather guinea pigs would hang out in the houses and run around freely until they were needed as meat.

Also an unspoken pact with nature. We eat cows, chickens, hunt deer, etc. We have an unspoken rule that we keep pets, demand nothing of them, as an unspoken 'thank you' to nature. For all that we use wildlife, we keep pets as a way to pay a bit of that back. Pets also teach us to value 'useless' things. Dogs don't pay rent, mow the lawn, etc. We value pets despite them not being productive. Elderly people are to be valued regardless if they are productive. Be wary of people that think pets are 'useless'... they likely would find old people 'useless' too. I am wary, even suspicious, of people without pets. Pets teach you to be selfless, how to care for others, and so much more. On top of that, if you can't take care of a dog, I'd question your ability to care for a spouse or child. Seems like good practice.

I do. not understand Western fascination/obsession with pets. Today I saw a woman who took in an armadillo who nearly died because she does not know what to feed it. she revived it using mouth to mouth rescusitation. it continues to ail in her home, but she insists, ignoring the fact that it could easily give her leprosy. I find many pet owners weird, cruel and unhealthy in their domestication approach.
