I left that group about a year ago. People are stuck in their own ways and don't wanna try different ideas, yet they want to bash other for pushing different ways instead of really learning, which we as farmers need to always do. Much love brother.

That was the original intention of the group. Pushing the boundaries of what could be achieved market gardening. I think there are just too many traditional and home gardeners active in the group. It's kind of sad, it has always been my go-to for higher level help.

Keith, THE BEST PART of your KZbin is all the experimental ideas that you come up with. "Wire weeder" "Tray Dibbler" and so on. Remember this is your KZbin channel, that you poured into, and I do hear you saying "go try it out". When we do these new things (ideas), we will have advances and setbacks. But don't let any of the setback come from these keyboard warriors. I totally appreciate your content.

Thank you. Some things I've come up with work great, but just don't fit our farm. It's all about context.

Fully agree with planting methods. I’ve been doing similar for 2 years - I start improving soil 2 years before planting for turbo boost

Plant mine the same way Keith and as I'm sure you do you hit them again with more fertilizer before you lay them by after they get up about 6-8" high..... of course down here in Louisiana you cant sell anything but a red potato so we dont bother with anything else. Good looking rows hope they make a bunch.
@farmerkeith8 ай бұрын
Yup, we throw out a little fertilizer before we hill them
@JimMeakim8 ай бұрын
My only question was how close were you planting them? I thought I was pushing it at a foot apart. I've never cut my seed potatoes. I have short 10' rows, Iso I manage to get10 plants in a row. This year I'm thinking of trying the cut method. I got a whole lot of Grow Bags to put the extra seed in!!. In any event, results is what really determines if you've done something right or wrong!! Enjoy your channel!! I'm still pretty new here, I've been gardening since I was little, 67 now. So many of your ideas I've been doing already!!

That is the great thing about the market garden technique. We are always pushing the envelope to what can be achieved.

I just dealt with the same exact thing with people trying to argue with me on the internet for trying to help suggest ways to someone on planting theirs. How they do it is up to them. I couldn't wrap my head around it either. People think there's only one right way to do it and everyone else is in the wrong if it's not their way of method on doing it. Plant them how you want to plant them! They are a pretty easy thing to grow, so there really isn't a wrong way of doing it. Why take the fun out if something anyone should enjoy doing.

I've never heard of Market Garden Success page. I plant my potatoes pretty much the same way you do. The only input I use is composted chicken manure and I get excellent results. My potatoes are already flowering here in South Carolina. I did rainbow fingerling potatoes this year. I planted them in January in low tunnels. Be harvesting May 1st. I'll beat the seasonal gardeners that show up in June and July with potatoes, beans, squash, and tomatoes. Those people really put a dent in a real farmers income.
@farmerkeith8 ай бұрын
That is awesome. Never head of a southern grower using a tunnel for potatoes. I might have to try that next season with my leftover potatoes.
@AnenLaylle70238 ай бұрын
@@farmerkeith You can plant them a month early around here if you use protection. Instead of planting on Valentine's Day I can get them in the ground around Jan 11th.
@judithhoudeshell93138 ай бұрын
I could only hope to be able to find composted chicken manure anymore. It makes a world of difference even in our small (compared to many other) home veg garden! Used to be able to get it locally, but not anymore. ALL my veggies grew so much better and bigger than by using anything else!

Planted ours today, Good Friday. We plant a B potato. Do not have to cut it seems to yield really well. Sell ours for around a dollar/lb. Sounds like we need to raise our price.
@farmerkeith8 ай бұрын
We always look at what the organic B size potatoes are selling in the grocery store. Then, adjust to compensate for the extra input and effort we put into our crop. There is a definite difference in our potatoes compared to the commercial farms that mine the land

What type of cooler do you use to keep your potatoes for so long?

I use a modified reach in 2 door fridge. I bought it broken, stuck an AC unit in the side, and did my DIY cool bot trick

Hi Keith, love the sound of this method as we are in a similar context! QUESTION: Does this planting method work with any variety of seed potato, Or should I be looking for a specific type such as 'Early maturing' only? ALSO How do you know when the potato's are ready to harvest at this maturity? What signs do you look for? Thanks!
