Why Do People Think Those with ENFP Personality Are so WEIRD?

A viewer asks why people think that all of us with an ENFP personality are so weird... but in true ENFP fashion, I respond with a rant about why everyone else are the weird ones!
ENFPs are often misunderstood. Misconceptions on the ENFP personality abound because we often stand out from the rest. Our "weirdness" is viewed as a bad thing by some, but it isn't!
I would argue that the things which make ENFPs weird are also tied to happier, longer and more fulfilling lives and the science backs me up!
Is the ENFP personality type weird, or is it other personalities and people who are the weird ones?

Does anyone else feel like this super energetic gregarious side comes out when around people or at a social event? Sometimes I tell myself to just play it cool, hang back etc. but I literally can’t help it 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ I open my mouth and I’m just super silly, making jokes and having fun. I always have a good time, get a lot of laughs etc but sometimes I’m also self-conscious about it because I don’t want people to think I’m self centered and just want to be an attention hog when in reality I don’t like “being the center of attention”. I just like having fun and laughing and I like to make sure everyone else is having fun too.

This is so true!!..as an ENFP, I'm bold and outgoing, but I've always had the fear of being misjudged. People think I'm less intelligent and dumb because I'm chatty and smiling always but none has ever been brave enough to venture into the depths of my character..I constantly find the need to justify myself..but today, I've stopped giving a damn about it!..who cares what they think?.. I've come to embrace my flaws and shrug off what others say!

I feel weird because I’m willing to be more vulnerable than most people typically are. I like to talk about my feelings and value honesty. I think people can be threatened by our ability to just be ourselves and embrace who we are. But I think people are also inspired by it. I feel like when we are truly ourselves it sort of gives permission for others to be themselves as well.
@heritage.home.crochet

So true, I'm always a little self-conscious about my openness to share and be vulnerable with others...mine comes so readily and automatically while others is a whole process of barriers to cross and milestones to reach before they can open up. It makes me feel like I live in my own world and that I don't know how to fit in to the social rules of society.

Sadly, at a very young age, I was told I was mental, weird, among other things, and was "diagnosed" with a mental illness. Life has been a series of lost jobs, relationships, and thinking I wasn't good enough. When I did anything artistic, my mother chided me about doing kindergarten work. She also wouldn't let me sing. Lots of blockages. I now live life as a "Creative Type ENFP Blue-Green." I'm 64. I hope the world is kinder to young ENFPs, so they don't have to go through what I have.

As an ENFP and my experiences, what makes us “weird” is our intuition which makes us think outside the box. We are also extroverted and feelers so that combination may make us smothering or over concerned about others. As a guy ENFP it can be weird but we are just genuine human beings that love people and I just love being an ENFP. Life is a roller coaster for us.

I think that what others might find weird about me is first of all my intense emotions. Am I the only one that can wake up feeling high on life for no reason? I often get questions like "Are you always happy? or "how much have you been drinking?" even though I'm completely sober. And the next day I cry like a baby. I think that sometimes I'm overwhelming to be around. I really struggle with tasks that has to be done, I constantly look for meaning with everything that I do that I skip things that doesn't feel enough stimulating. Though I find passion and meaning in things that other people don't. Noting feels as important to me as social engagement with other people. People mistake me for flirting a lot because I just wan't to know all about you, what makes you happy, your biggest passion etc. Am I the only weirdo who is like this?
@heritage.home.crochet
@heritage.home.crochet 5 жыл бұрын
Ellinor, I could have written this. I'm literally crying. Every word you said is exactly what I go through. I wake up super happy for no reason, like there is a real grin and everything...then some days I just cry at the smallest stimuli. People thinking I've had 4 cups of coffee and that I'm flirting just bc I take personal interest in others. It's not fun to just pretend like you don't care what someone is thinking or why they choose to wear that button on their backpack, bc it must mean something! It literally hurts when people are so cold and careless about interacting.

That’s true. ENFPs not-too-uncommonly present as socially-anxious misfits who are bullied at school when they’re younger (no offence). I think the feeling for them of being misunderstood is more pronounced when they’re at school. Most of them can hardly be differentiated from more pragmatic INFPs with a certain weirdness to them before their early 20s/university days (or the equivalent).

I’m an ENFP and I am American. I am about to graduate college and I have many friends from all walks of life. I’ve found that in America especially, I come off as weird at first to people I meet because I’m genuinely nice. I think America as a whole (correct me if you disagree) automatically assumes that if a stranger thinks I’m overly nice, I’m trying to get something from them. It’s not until I’ve been around these strangers for a while and build a trust and let me show my true nature time and time again that they begin to relax. It’s at this point that I begin the “friendship” stage. They then begin to laugh at my jokes more and begin to ask me about what excites me in life.. Also, with the whole nice thing, I think a big part comes down to the deep ness we crave and this also throws people off because our culture is so superficial I feel like... okay rant over lol

Yo I'm actually at a point where I'm getting bothered by the fact that I find myself asking a lot of questions to people. It always comes down too... Okay either I'm being too much, or they're being too little. Of course it's a lot of factors to consider like trust, personal issues, and fears, but rn I'm trying to see where that middle ground is in order so I can be able to connect easier... This goes onto why I hate small talk. Just so much face value bs.... And it's that right there.. tha is why we ask so much questions.... Just pure and simple. People aren't being truly real with other people, and in turn is why people see us as weird because we're just natural at being real, and we want to encourage everyone to do the same. We genuine put our heart out on our sleeves and want to be respected for it. That live and let live kinda lifestyle. Respect slowly ain't becoming shit nowadays.... Forgive me for my Fi/Te rant.

I love how happy I am and the joy and energy that I bring to other people. Sometimes, people think of it as me wanting to be the center of attention, but it's really not that at all! I'm just excited about everything and I want to motivate other people so they can see what I see! I see endless opportunities, meaning behind EVERYTHING, and I love to bring attention to, for example, how the people around us in a group are really feeling, because most people are completely oblivious to what is going on around them that isn't necessarily at face value. My dad, for example, is amazed when we walk out of a room and he thinks everyone had a great time, and I have to tell him, "Oh man, when this person said this, that other person got really pissed, and then it made that person next to them feel really uncomfortable, and these two other people thought the whole situation was hilarious, but they couldn't show it because the first person was talking from their heart and it was a serious moment, so they didn't want to seem rude." He looks at me like I'm a wizard. LMAO!!! But this is just so natural to me that I don't understand how other people can't see it! I loved the video, by the way. It was very reaffirming. What is selfish or immature or childish or "weird" about wanting to be happy and free, and not spend my life going to a job everyday to live out someone else's agenda? Seriously, what is so crazy about that??? I just don't understand how our society got to be the way it is. All of this is so unnatural.

So true! I really struggled with this in my 20’s, and growing up in a family of SJ’s, they saw me as passionate, which was “cute”, but mostly as a person who needed to be saved from myself because of my outlandish ideas that were impractical and out there. Many influential people saw me as a wild stallion that needed to be broken. And I was for a long time- maybe jumping into unhealthy archetype personalities along the way. Working my Fi has been the key to centering myself and finding joy.

Dreams Around The World Now being at a point at looking at our type from an keen objective standpoint. I find that to be very true. To the point of where our Ne can be subconscious at times we don't necessarily take a step back and realize, "oh shit I just hit this person with a lot just now" in terms of communication. Especially when we're a lil too active in our Ne. Couple that with our Te trying to help people logically understand our Fi values we stand by. It's damn near a struggle having to explain ourselves quite often since our value system is not in alignment with usually that are of the norms of society or of a certain standard

We have the downfall to come across as a "Michael Scott". Sometimes our openmindedness and desire to connect and involve everybody in community can make us come across as the weirdo. I remember always trying to gather up my friends to make a band, or a club or something. "Come on guys let's make a band!!" or "Come on guys, LETS (insert idea here)" and nobody wanting to do it and thinking it's weird how EXCITED I was for wanting to do something like that. If everybody's not on board I tend to lose my motivation. I can lose myself and go into this weird enfp depression from a lack of community and connectedness, which makes me come off as the alien girl.

We're the explorers of the un ventured. We're so curious about things that it sometimes backfires on us because it does us harm, like drugs and alcohol. We don't know when to hold back and can be too much for a lot of people. We're unique because normal is boring to us. We can be sensitive and easily hurt which doesn't mix well with being naturally weird. But if we find the right people we can make the deepest, most meaningful bonds and have a life of ups and downs no one else can relate to. Big up Enfps

We are considered weird because we do not fit into any one mold. We like to change and morph with the circumstances and people we are around in order to make connections. The "I'll try anything once" mentality makes the ISTJs and ESTJs look on in wonder at our lack of conformity and individuality. While the INFJs wonder at our changing patterns, the INFPs wish to come along for the ride. The person that understands me the most is an INTJ. Except when enter one of these chats with other ENFPs. Then I feel like the most understood individual on the planet.

I consider myself a “i choose how I live and no one can tell me how to live” guy, but I’m super sensitive to how others feel. Like when I do stuff, I’m always thinking how will this affect the people around me. People I know really well I’m less concerned about how they will feel because I trust that they aren’t going to treat me weirdly because I acted a bit weird, but people I don’t know well or generally when a lot of people are around I will constrain myself to make people at ease and not cause any disagreements. But yeah, I like the Meier Briggs tests, because even if they aren’t legitimate tests and whatnot, it still helped me a lot and it’s fun to see how people with the same trait will act. Granted I’m not taking this test word for word and doing what it tells me and all, but I see it as a way to help me figure out myself, like this test is one piece of the puzzle for figuring out who I am.

I'm learning so much the more that I watch of your videos. People thought I was weird growing up. I had no friends in school and didn't really blossom until college. I also grew up in a toxic environment with narcissistic parents and a brother who also didn't get me. I've literally spent more than half my life feeling alone and misunderstood. After a sexual harassment presentation in grade 8, anyone who was ever made to feel uncomfortable by someone was encouraged to come forward. I didn't harass anyone but I made a lot of people uncomfortable and that was enough to justify the suspension. It's nice to know it's the rest of the world that's living blind and ignorant. Being an ENFP is exhausting, but rewarding. Now people appreciate my honesty and openness. My integrity is constantly questioned but I've learned to let go of what others think. I've bought a pre construction condo and am working 60+hours a week, including weekends, getting balance on weekends and evenings after work with the occasional day off. And somehow I feel energized. Working towards something gives me life. Knowing the harder I work now, the easier it will be then is so rewarding. Short term goals help keep us focused.

It took me a long LONG time as an ENFP to not only embrace and appreciate my “weirdness”, but to also learn to staunchly defend it too. Like, I wish I could go back in time and had the confidence and foresight to give a big middle finger to any and everyone who called me weird as a kid and say, “You’re the one that’s normal, basic and just plain boring! Have fun spinning on your hamster wheel in your cubicle and living a mediocre and unremarkable life” lol. Everyone wants to think they’re “special” these days. ENFP’s have forever KNOWN that we were always special from the start, even if we didn’t always see the upside of it. From our outlook, to the way we communicate, to the way we live our lives, we’re one of a kind. And, most everyone in our lives thinks so too.

Weird - now there's a word I've been called on many occasions. I think we give off a quirky vibe and our flow of conversation can be great, then all of a sudden - an 'abstract' thought will come in to play. The other person just shuts down, looks at you strangely. Noticing this, you ask them questions to get the conversation back on track. They can't figure you out. I think I've just been surrounded by sensors on the myers briggs all my life (I'm 30 now). A different way of thinking and that's okay. I got a group (hiking) that I'm part of to take the test recently (16 out of 20) came back as sensors (mostly ESTP, ISTP, ISFP, ESTJ, ISTJ funnily enough). Still looking for my tribe out there...

i think of it this way. Most Sensors are only sensors because they avoid (are afraid of) thinking, aka Intuition/N. And Thinkers are only thinkers because they avoid (are afraid of) Feeling. Then we're different from most other N types (intellectuals) because we are Extroverted, and also because we are P, which is kind of goofy. So it's like a hodgepodge of non-normal things.

I feel like us ENFPs need to leave America to thrive elsewhere. Somewhere we can expand our creative energy! God made us this way to be the light in the darkness. Keep smiling fam

I was on cloud 9 in my early 20s but i havent been allowed or able to translate that into the life i was excited for. People think im not sober, im autistic, im adhd or im manic. Figuring out how to navigate relationships, passion, profession while being misunderstood has really gotten in the way of my success and independence.

ENFP... found out today... feels good to actually understand myself a bit better... a bit skeptical about all of it, but this sure gives me a clearer understanding of where and how I can flourish and what I can work on to be a better version of myself... With this I can go out into the world with new found perspective of where I can shine and be an inspiration to others... You've got to get to know yourself before you can be the true best version of YOU. Glory to God and all the wonderful people he made! Now go and embrace yourself and all the others around you! I'm an ENFP and have learned that people think I'm quirky and weird. I work in education and most people in that field are muggles or mainstreamers. I don't fit with them very well and I feel like they all think I'm a weirdo, but the people that appreciate me for who I am make me feel very comfortable.

I had a moment of seeming weird yesterday. I usually dominate class discussions, even when I do not intend to. I’ll wait a while for others to engage in the discussion, but when they don’t, I’m happy to. Yesterday in psychology my teacher brought up bonobos and the differences with them and chimps. She asked what we knew about them. I have a minor passion for primates and behavior. I think it’s essential to understanding human behavior and evolutionary biology. So I said many things about them. And people were all like “how do you even know that” and acting as if I were some alien.

That’s a good book! Makes me want to be in a hunter gatherer society. I’ve heard people critisize it though. A book you must read if you haven’t yet is “Behave” by Robert Sapolsky

I'm an INFJ and this is exactly the kind of thing I say all the time. I also have a hard time adapting to the social "Te". I like to do things my way and not be tied to conventional methods. I prefer to do things alone than to be surrounded by people and bosses pressuring me.

Its weird for me when people said we are weird. I believe all I did is enjoying myself and let them have fun around me as well as sharing my enjoyment with them. I tend to hear "weird" so often but I like the way you explained in the vid, just like the way I thought. ✌️

ENFP here!! I've noticed people either realllly take to me and I can feel their total respect for me (for my opinion and ideas etc) or people really don't like me and try to really bring me down! I'm told I'm really straight forward and sometimes (too) honest. Which I guess for some may make them feel uncomfortable. But I can't pay my bills and run my 4 businesses with their opinions 🤪👅👑xxx

Yes ! My dad, my family members and my colleagues said that I'm weird. "You have an awesome paid job (routine job 😃) that some people want your position. You are simply not grateful. "

Your video is word. The only “office job” I prospered in was working for a new museum’s launch. The poobahs came down from D.C. to us in NYC and said we were going to be the darlings of the org. as a new branch, with unlimited experimentation and an encouragement to innovate, for which I came through. They said after 5 or 10 years, however, the bureaucracy will have set in, with bean counters, suits and forms in triplicate. I lasted 10 years. 😃 Freelancing in design, art or music is beyond my ENFP shadow functions, however. I just make stuff for people, the devil’s in the details for sure.

Dan, I guess I can say the Smithsonian without my NDA nailing me from 2003. I’m being divorced and having to reconsider my intuitively awesome retirement funds, to be cautious. At 65 I’ve learned how to better use my inferior functions and thanks to insights gained here, I’m not letting them run the show. I’ve got another bureaucratic org. offering me part time web work with BENEFITS. I was hungry at first but now I’m reconsidering getting back on that horse, and maybe take another shot at the arts with my skills more mature. I’m watching you! ☝🏽

I foundered a bit at my most successful office job until I read our mission statement. Instead of boring drivel it was an inspiration to know that I was to serve a diverse community who’d been robbed of a voice for generations, to be merely a channel to get them “up to the mic.” Discouraging days were less so as a moral center had been provided me. ENFPs seem to love that kind of stuff. 😃
