I can’t help but wonder how many innocent people in centuries past were persecuted as witches or were thought to be possessed by demons, when in fact they were only suffering from Tourette’s. It’s easy to imagine the reactions of a simple country priest finding himself confronted with a person displaying physically violent tics and coprolalia. The temptation to think he was facing a person possessed by a demon would be almost overwhelming, especially when the person’s behaviour escalated under the stress of the situation.

I've met a pair of twin boys that both had Tourette's. They were from a religious family and were well known because the parents explained the disorder to some and soon everyone knew. They were at a huge yearly convention when I first met them. They had the swearing words also, but everyone overlooked that because of knowledge. 👍

I can only help with the Greek here, copros does mean a great amount of filth as you said, and in Greek the word manure is also derived from that, and lalia comes from the verb lalo which means to talk. So if anyone with TS finds himself in Greece and has to explain his syndrome in a person that hasn't heard of it before, I think using the word coprolalia is pretty self explanatory and could be useful.

Thanks for taking the time out for the conversation about this - I will admit i myself have wondered why the tics can often be so intense. lol what my brain heard this was, is basically "involuntary sh** talking" lol. I promise I'm not making fun but because I'm a little familiar with languages too I hadn't realized it meant that, essentially ahah - that popped into my head and made me chuckle. To top it off you're so sweet. I know it must be intense when those things come out in public, and potentially super awkward situations. I have a more mild case of Tourette’s, so I didn’t know about the other kinds of tics other than motor, vocal, and coprolalia (not sure if I spelt that correctly). It’s actually really interesting of how many types of tics there are!! I read Evie Meg’s book and it is very informative on not only Tourette’s but also depression, OCD, FND, etc! It’s so nice to hear about someone else’s experiences

Never got diagnosed but i still have tics, mostly when im stressed ill start to jerk my neck real hard or throw my hands up. Its always so sudden, i either throw what im holding or hit myself. I know a few people with tourettes, having mental health issues on top is far worse as I've witnessed this in someone I know before Christmas, I could even tell that something was bothering him. In this case his tics were more dark like he'd laugh in a creepy way and make hand suggestions of cutting throats and that. A lot of other people will think negatively of him and take the suggestions as a threat rather than seeing his disability. There's also someone that works for one of the TV broadcasters and she usually says "Cats" and "Biscuits" while announcing something before a programme starts.

Latin scientific terms occasionally impress by their blend of formal and informal meanings; in the case of "coprolalia", it literally translates as, "talking shit". 😊

A few friends I had have coprolalia and they’d always get in trouble. We both have tics though I don’t have it. We’d try to explain it was a tic, not actually what she was thinking, they weren’t just saying swears because it’s what they were thinking. It didn’t matter. No one understood. No one understood they didn’t mean it. It was no reflection of their thoughts. A racial slur was always ticced at me, but I knew it was a tic. Other people didn’t understand that he wasn’t actually calling me that slur, and other people who had that slur directed at them tried to hurt him and didn’t get why I wasn’t upset. It really hurt them. He actually contemplated ending himself. Thank his he never did but the guilt he felt was bad enough. Outside judgement just made it all worse. I’m not offended if someone tics it at me. I’m just not because I know and understand. People need to understand

Hi Zara! I don’t have tics, but I stim a lot. It would be really hard to slow down, it’s not the same as tics, but it is stimming caused by either ADHD or autism. I would make animal noises, alarm noises, and yes. It is normal autistic people stim, but for some reason I scream it really really loudly. It would happen 24/7 even when I’m tired of doing it. It gets so tempting all of the sudden, it’s a different feeling. I just suddenly get a strong urge to scream or something so yes I’m sure it could be fixed with some therapy but hey I was just wondering what this could be its some sort of stimming but I don’t know yet but if you have any ideas please let me know! I am autistic and know a few other people who are both autistic and have Tourette’s and I know you are also autistic too. I was wondering if there was a crossover sort of thing between Tourette’s and autism? I know there is will queerness and gender diversity but I have never heard anything about a relationship with Tourette’s however in my mind (I don’t know very much about Tourette’s so I am definitely not a professional on this topic) it does make some sense. I’m not sure if you know anything about this and I suppose there is very little research but if you do know anything I am very curious and would love to hear about it ❤

I can’t give you the exact science or a “smart” education, but autism and Tourettes both have genetic ties, and both involve being born with a non typical brain/ your brain sends signals differently. It makes sense that if your brain is already non typical from autism, Tourettes could also happen as it is your brain sending signals incorrectly

Tics arent what you actually think, so the swearing pretending it’s a tic has no affect or meaning. So it would be pointless. And when you’ve experienced living with tics you’d never think about faking them
