I have a 26" fat tire e-bike. I've had a few guys of the spandex crowd comment sarcastically "Nice tires!". My standard comeback is "Nice pants!". One time it was from a young guy riding with a group and my response got a good laugh from his buddies at his expense. Hold your ground folks. We all belong out there.

Hi Russ, I'm glad you brought up this subject on e-bike warriors and Karens. I personally think there are many reasons as to why certain ppl attack e-bikes. Here is what it appeared in my lenses as a conventional cyclist. A new electric bike hits the market. Then, just within a small number of years, e-bikes start popping up in ads and social media. It becomes insanely popular to where one might question as to why it took so long for people to get on a bicycle in the first place. After 22 years of riding, I've dealt with angry motorists and bicycle haters. Now, it SEEMS as if e-bikes are more socially accepted over regular bicycles (I'm starting to question this scenario though). So, it is a quick social change, which many conventional cyclists are not used to. Many of us have felt like we've been left in the dark. Time will allow us to adapt and heal. E-bikes are wonderful in many ways, for they close a transportation gap that didn't originally exist. I tried an e-bike and loved how it took the hills and took off with a great amount of torque. I might get one in the near future, but I prefer the ability to maintain higher speeds of 30 mph and above (when appropriate) on a conventional bike. I'm now more understanding of e-bikes and, I know many fellow conventional cyclists who also own one. The bikes just took to the market too quickly and defiantly. Some e-bikes also look more like motorsports bikes adding to confusion and anger from those not familiar with such. I also believe many high performance e-bike riders (Suron, Juiced, ect.) are creating many problems placing a bad label on e-bikes and e-bike riders in general. What about the Karens? Just try to understand why they're like that, but also stand your ground when needed. To many of you e-bikers out there, most conventional cyclists do not wear spandex and/or Lycra. 😉😊😂 Keep getting better and take care of yourself.

Another great commentary Russ. Regarding comments from people, I get a lot of positive comments everywhere I go, but if I'm going to get a negative comment or look it's going to be on a trail. I was just on a rail trail yesterday and an older gentleman I was approaching said "Those sure look like fun!" I was so surprised I stopped and we had a nice positive talk about e-bikes. Then a little bit later I got some scowls from walkers and a lady walking in a small group said nicely, "you know that's cheating". But I think she meant it in fun. I always pedal when on a trail so it doesn't look like I'm riding a motorcycle. And I always slow way down around walkers and groups, more so if they have kids and dogs. I can't go much slower than 10 mph though or I get wobbly and that puts them in danger. I always say some sort of a greeting and a smile to help keep the peace. Most encounters I receive are pleasant. Especially so on the return trip if they're still there. We need to be diligent at being kind and respectful not only to be nice to others, but also so we can continue to be viewed legally as a bicycle. Regarding e-trikes. I was going to get my wife an e-trike because of her age and health. I thought it would be safer than an e-bike for her. But being the researcher that I am, I came across this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZmag3WgadeLm6ssi=qeV4hgAQMrhJczNj That convinced me I don't want my wife on one. First, she'd never be able to keep up with me because anything over about 8-10 mph is just simply unsafe on those things, especially for Seniors with limited reactions. And second, where I live most of the roads and trails have a sharp drop off on the edge of the blacktop. It's difficult to always know where the right rear wheel is at all times on a trike and if she moved over to the right to make room for somebody, that rear wheel could drop off the edge and send her careening into the ditch. Not happening. I got her an e-bike instead.

Haters gonna hate, so I’m not going to comment on them. What I will comment on is where e-bikes should go in 2024. I see two areas where improvement is needed : range and weight. Bikes are too heavy (especially if you need to lift them for any reason) and if, heaven forbid, you run out of battery my old legs cannot pedal back home. I did see a bike with 100+ mile range recently but it was over 100 lbs in weight. Yikes! I’d like to see you focus on bikes that try to address these two issues in the coming year and avoid the incrementally better bikes from the usual suspects. Thanks and keep riding, Russ.

I think most negative comments about bikes come from people that don't understand that an e-bike is still a good form of exercise for most riders. True we have a motor to assist us, but we still pedal, some more than others, and we benefit from getting out and moving. The "cheating" accusation, as if riding an ultra lite carbon frame bike with 21-24 gears is the same as riding a 1950s Schwinn. Let's see them on a 50-75 pound bike . I listen to them as much as I listen to my wife; in one ear out the other. Or better yet, turn up the volume on the AirPods, listen to the long version of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and everything is beautiful....never hear those negative comments.....but then you also don't hear "nice bell" or the semi-truck coming up behind you

Good morning Russ, Happy 2024. You don't look 65, my brother is 61 and looks old. On New Years Eve I went for a ride and this older man about 70+ yrs old crashed his e-bike, a few of us stopped, he was wearing a bike helmet, but still banged his left eye on the curb. I took out my 1st Aid Kit to help him out, he also broke his prescription glasses, I offered to tape them up, but he said it was fine, they were mainly for close up, his e-bike didn't get any damage. His e-bike is huge, with 29" Fat Tires, I think it's too big for him, as he said he fell already and he also said it's a new e-bike. We always have these 'Spandex Riders' and they always pass us and they go fast on regular bicycles. Thank You 4 Another Good Video 😎

Bike riders in general are some of the rudest and entitled people on the road. Especially in cities. I have an ebike and am cognizant of general safety enough to signal and slow down when I'm near people. I have also seen regular bicycle riders take extreme risks to themselves and the walking and jogging public because they think the trails belong to them. Generally I lower the assistance level on my ebike because I need the exercise and only use higher levels when I can't make some of the steeper hills, so speed is not an issue for me usually. I don't understand the hatred for ebikes. Most ebike riders I know tend to be extremely vigilant about safety because they don't want to be banned from the paths and the rail trails.

You know what would be a welcome change on the trails inhabited by both those walking and riding? That the folks walking only have one ear plugged with an earbud/headphone, so that they can hear the folks on bikes ring the bell (multiple times), and announce on your left/right. Oh, and that they don't walk in the middle of the trail, even when they see you coming towards them. Okay, rant over. Welcome to 2024 😎

The speed limit for vehicles at the park I ride at is 15mph. Heck, I can coast downhill there and easily hit 20-22mph. There's a guy (adult) who rides one of those One Wheel things at the park, and he's passed me and cars before. The few spandex riders I've encountered there fly through the park, even on the narrow paved trail. They always pass me, and I just give 'em a bell ring as they go by. 🤔 Pure speculation, but maybe there's some kind of disorder involved whereas that narrow seat they use, combined with the spandex material, is affecting their thought patterns. 🤪

Hi Russ. Great topic today, as always. The bottom line is that people need to leave people alone! They don't know the circumstances behind someone being on an ebike. Personally, I have loved cycling since I was a kid. But health issues now make riding a non-ebike an impossibility. My ebike gives me the ability to feel like a kid again. The "Spandex Crew" should remember that the important thing is that we're getting out and moving. Engaging in an activity many wouldn't be able to enjoy without an ebike. Btw: I am in the market for an etrike, and would love to have you review one. I am in the Chicagoland area and could certainly pick it up from you if the price is right. 😊

Believe it or not, I've already seen one of those road LCD speed limit display signs parked on a pedestrian/bike trail, so there's a big problem with people going fast. It all comes down to each individual person being responsible and considerate of others on the pedestrian/bike paths and to ride not more than the 15mph speed limit 'where I come from' and to slow down around people walking especially with children. There are also many types of electric 'new school' modes of transportation traveling very fast on the bike paths....take care.

Happy New Year Russ and Russ Nation. People in general get off on trying to push people around. The ego requires power and today more than ever people exercise their egos in many ways including trying to police the world. I run into the same issue you have with anti e-bikers flying drones as a commercial FAA Part 107 pilot for real estate and marketing content. People trying to tell me that its against the law to fly a drone. I carry the FAA code of drone operations with me to educate people and even then people get nasty. This includes threats of shooting the drone out of the sky - which is a federal offense if they do. People want to be bullies.

I don’t think it’s jealousy, a lot of road bikes are way more expensive than a mid-range ebike, they could buy one if they wanted. I think they’d prefer the path was emptier for their use and think they can intimidate you into staying off. I suspect the chances of comments shoot down to zero if they think irritating you could start a fight they wouldn’t win.

Nice shared path you’re on. I prefer trail and shared paths over street riding but that’s just me. I’ve only had one guy say l wasn’t allowed on the path in 12,000km of riding. I nicely explained to him why I was. You can ride fast on shared paths, just slow down when passing pedestrians or approaching ongoing foot traffic. When no one is around, give it for all you’ve got. I get more thank yous, waves and smiles than anything. I have to say the road racers (spandex) are the most ignorant group out there and I swear not one of them owns a bell or knows how to work one. With my new bike the road racers only pass me when I allow them to. I’m not a fan of the E-peds as most of them are illegal for the shared paths (500 watt max) up here. Plus the E-peds stick out like a sore thumb on the paths and aren’t really meant to be pedaled. If I was commuting and had to ride on the streets mainly, I would look at an E-ped. On the positive I got to ride my bike 15 times in Nov. and 14 times in Dec. because of the crazy warm temperatures (0.c to +6.c) and lack of snowfall this winter. In 2022 I only took my bike out twice in Dec and not at all in Nov. Happy riding and happy new year. Oh and you’re looking good old timer. 👍

Hi Russ, trikes ride very different from two wheeled bikes. You generally have lean the opposite way to maintain balance. I personally don’t like them, however, my wife has gotten used to them. When I ride my “regular” bike on the bike path, I ride more than 15 mph. That’s the fun of riding. You ride faster to set yourself up for hills and use that momentum to ascend the hill maintaining close to your flat terrain speed. I’m 72 years old and still use that technique. I rode yesterday, Jan 1st, and used that technique even though there weren’t any other bikes out because it was cold (in the 30’s°F). The “spandex” riders pride themselves in being able to power and propel themselves ahead of many other riders and consider the use of an e-bike giving you an unfair advantage. I know because I used to be one of them and know what I would have thought had e-bikes been around 30 years ago. It’s not jealousy that the spandex group have. That is reserved for the other group who are struggling to make it up hills and see you wiz past them. They’re jealous that they don’t have one and want you to be as miserable as they are. Enjoy your riding and don’t worry about them. Remember, misery loves company!

Happy New Year Russ.. The law for riding an ebike on public paths in my state says only Class 1 can be ridden with No throttles, and up to 15 mph. One other thing, your bike plus your weigh in the excess 350lbs. Those in spandex are more likely to weigh less than 250lbs total. I'm not going to do the math but it is significant. (Momentum = 1/2 * Mass * velocity) squared) Someone can really get hurt.

I took a mid-afternoon 20+ mile ride mostly on our local riverside trail yesterday, passing many walkers and cyclists. The only bad mouthing I got was from a cyclist going the other way, when I slowed down to pass a meandering group of pedestrians and entered "his" side of the path, but he didn't slow down at all (we're all supposed to slow to 12mph near other people, with a 20mph max), so apparently I was at fault. It's a wide path and there was still room for him to pass safely. I saw a lot of other eBikers, I didn't count them but there's a lot of us out there. There's one short section that specifically prohibits eBikes (and eScooters etc), so we know the rest of the path permits eBikes. As an eBiker it's easier for me to restart/accelerate than a regular biker, so I give priority to regular cyclists if we both need to pass walkers but in different directions.

Most of the comments I've had are positive, from people who are interested in getting one. I'm happy to discuss my ebike & experiences with it, all day long with those kind of ppl. But I had one guy who was living 2 doors up from a place I was renting in Florida last winter, who was very negative on ebikes. First, he had walked up my driveway in a neighborly way and spoken to me a couple times about conspiracy theories and politics, and a certain political candidate for POTUS he was backing 100% and was trying to see where I was on the political spectrum. I'm a Canadian Snowbird, don't want to get involved with US politics while down in FL escaping winter and said so. Once I told him I was Canadian, he started ripping into Canadian politics, quoting verbatim a well known US news channel. (Excuse me...entertainment channel their lawyers always say in court) When he saw me returning from a ride one sunny morning and realized I had an ebike, he let me know his opinion of them - "they cause fires! They're not safe! They should be outlawed! You're supporting the Chinese when you buy one of those, does the owner know you're charging an ebike in her garage?", (she did), and then he quit speaking to me. Hallelujah! There are knuckle dragging Neanderthals everywhere. Just move along (quickly) and dont let them discourage you. They live in fear (of everything, apparently). You know, like the rest of us here do too that the world is full of light, fresh air, birds and beautiful scenery too, not just darkness and hate, and it is easily enjoyed on an ebike. same mentality that causes people to try policing the activities or behaviours of others that have nothing to do with anyone else in so many other aspects of life. some people can't accept other people doing or looking or believing or acting different from themselves. it's our concern though that these people aren't unopposed in places that set local rules and regulations. Which i think is where focus needs to really be for ebikers. we already have nonsensical rules around them... we can't rely on common sense to just happen when more rules are made. hopefully the participation gets to car level and self interest of the majority makes it less of an uphill battle. i really think personal ev transportation is a major advancement to better traffic and better air and bridges the gap of ev car adoption. once everyone has them, i think these occurrences will drop off.

I am in favor of an out building for a squad of ebikes. I have a grip load of them and it doesn't give me a warm fuzzy having a bunch of batteries in the house. If a quality issue were to ignite I would rather lose a shed than my home.

We have a family friend who is partially paralyzed from a military incident. I am not ashamed to say he is strong and can out distance me on an acoustic but... has had times where he ran out of juice and his dad had to get him. He is influenced by a spandex rider and will not consider electric assist. My friend has a delta recumbent trike that is very tippy. With his abilities he just goes over and can't catch himself. He now has a frog and although he still tips it is far less. Riding is the most freedom he has to do something on his own and has a friend with him jic of a problem.

I see that you were using a thumb throttle. Could I possibly put one of those on my Ocelet pro and if so, do I have to cut the handlebar grips off and put a new one on?

I have never had a comment about our Ebikes on the Cook County Forest Preserve trails. We ride Lectric step-thrus so we are not so imosing as a 26 inch 4" fat tire bike. I think part of the issue is that the trails are marked "No Motor Vehicles". What the un-educated do not understand is that under Illinois law, Calss 1 and 2 Ebikes are not classed as Motor Vehicles. This is a legal definition, not a logical definition. I carry a copy of the law, and a copy of the CCFPD trail regulations just in case though. Sometimes even police officers can get confused.

Why hate e-bikes? Insecurity, jealousy, ignorance, still have a need to prove their manhood... the list is endless! 😂 On state park trails, pedal bikes pass me all the time and I have watched them blow past children and strollers at 30mph. I usually hover around 12 to 14mph, then slow down more when passing pedestrians.

Warning: This post might be long. Why are e-bikes hated? I think I'm in a position to answer that. I own two e-bikes but my past is mostly on traditional road bikes. Been riding for more than 30 years. My two e-bikes are both Trek. One is a commuter and the other is a road e-bike (and, yes, I'm a spandex dude on my road bike). The two bikes allow me to mingle with two different crowds. My road bike crowd are okay with e-bikes that don't have throttles. In other words, if a rider pedals, then they are okay with an e-bike. It's those who are riding on a bike path doing 20 mph using only throttle. That's not "riding". That's "driving". There's a very active discussion going on in a reddit sub right now about this subject. The other thing about e-bikers is that they post rides on Strava and not identify their rides are e-bike rides. Strava is a fitness tracking site that allows riders to compete on certain segments (yes, road cyclists are very competitive in nature). When an e-biker post a ride on Strava without identifying the ride as a e-bike, they are cheating the system. As for speed, road cyclists do like their speed but there is a big difference between an experienced road cycling group riding at 28 mph and an e-biker riding at 28 mph. I've seen too many inexperienced e-bikers riding out of control, weaving all over the road with many near misses with cars and other cyclists. Most experienced road cyclists are in control of their bikes even at those speeds. Of course, there are exceptions on both sides. As for acceptance, the problem exists in both camps. Whenever I bring my road e-bike to an e-bike group comments are made about my bike (even though it's an e-bike but it doesn't look like one). And same is true when joining a road group with my commuter e-bike. However, I find the acceptance level greater with the road group. This might be because my commuter bike is a Trek and it doesn't have a throttle. If you are curious as to what I ride, my two bikes are a Trek Domane+ SLR6 Pro and a Trek Allant+ 7S. There is room for everyone out there. My wish for 2024 is that everyone stop with the negative comments and just ride!
