To everyone saying in the comments that they don't know anyone who owns a gun and this video is false. The Philippines does have a prevalent gun culture, you just don't encounter it because there probably aren't any enthusiasts in your circle of influence(friends, coworkers, etc.). You just don't know that your average Filipino has a gun. Before I became a gun owner and started trying out in local shooting competitions, I also never knew that there are a lot of gun owners in my city alone, and that gun owners actually have the ability and access to buy and own imported guns and all the accessories. It's like taking up a hobby like fishing or golf, you don't know that there are millions of people who fish or golf for sport or competition unless you get into it, you just don't know it because you personally don't know anyone or aren't in the hobby to know about it at all. You have your hobbies or interests that keep you occupied enough to look around for other people in other hobbies or sport. I mean, how many of you exactly know that there are competitions for koi fish breeding in the Philippines? Or that there is a large community of Magic The Gathering players and they hold large tournaments around the country? Do you guys even know that there is are a lot of 4x4 off-road enthusiasts in the country? Like any other hobby, everyone will think gun ownership is expensive and is only for rich people, and will then conclude that your average middle-class Filipino doesn't have the resources to buy and own one. You'd be surprised that a lot of car enthusiasts who join in on car shows are middle-class average joes who just have a lot of passion for cars. One other reason why you don't see people carrying guns is because licensed gun owners, like me, are responsible law-abiding citizens and must adhere to the laws, and the law requires us as per our license requirements, that our guns must be concealed at all times, and I mean at all times; when entering a mall, we must inform the security guard that we are carrying a firearm and they bring us to the mall's security office where we present our licenses and documents then safely deposit our firearm, and we can claim it upon exiting the mall. When traveling through airport and seaports, we also inform the security personnel that we are carrying a firearm, they would set us aside where we then present our licenses and documents, after which we would need to check-in our firearms and claim it at the security office upon arrival to our destination. Literally noone knows about it because it is done very discreetly. When I renew my license to own and possess, I am usually in a jam packed room taking my neuro-psycho exam along with many other gun owners in a single day, and these gun owners aren't the scary-looking men you see in the street, these are all everyday average men and women of all ages who have regular jobs, businesses, professionals, and retirees; each with a different purposes to own a firearm. Aside from legal gun owners, a lot of households actually has an illegal firearm in their home that they use as a last resort when someone breaks into their home. Illegal firearms are readily available in the poverty-stricken areas and selling them as cheap as 5 thousand pesos. These firearms are usually backyard made or were stolen. If it is backyard made, then there is a risk of it exploding on its user's hand due to the poor material used, but you wouldn't know about this because they wouldn't really tell you they have an illegal gun. Gun owners have this 'no-tell' policy that they don't really talk about guns unless the person they're talking to is a fellow gun enthusiast. I mean, non-gun enthusiasts will not understand what they are talking about anyway so why talk about guns when they can talk about the news? It's not like other interests like cars or basketball that anyone can immediately jump in a conversation, there are people who will immediately become apprehensive of you if you tell them you have a gun and there are also people who will flat out discriminate you for owning one and imply you are a violent individual(when you literally cannot possess a firearm if you have a record of violence).
@willbe49464 жыл бұрын
aLwE17 yup, good point on the people who legally own guns. It is usually the ignorant one's who generally view legal gun ownership as bad. Gun ownership is a lengthy process in our country. Plus maintaning a legal hobby is requires discipline, accountability, and a dedicated budget. Personally, I would like to own and use one in the future for personal protection. Anyway, have a good one.

I think the video failed to examine the true cause of violence, blaming it mostly on the tool, rather than the individual. Its also disappointing that the video failed to examine our current gun laws and how ineffective it is in curbing gun related crimes. As they say, gun laws are for law abiding citizens and not for criminals. I think this video treat both as one, which is a big mistake. Look at root causes and not on popular macho culture!

Ive been in japan and comparing our country to japan related to gun laws. Well, theres a very big gap. First of all, japan forbids guns to citizens, even police have no guns. Only the military. The result is outstanding low crime rate and crime prevention is easier and manageable by hand. Here in ph. First of, standard ls in getting a gun is easy. All you need to have is money. But what you said is correct, guns are not the problem, its the user. But having the public to easily acquire guns because they have money is..... you know what i mean. Besides from our law not being enforced strictly, we have low standards to getting a firearm. And illegal selling of guns is rampant. But the again it all boils down to the people. Prevention is better than cure. No firearm means no shooting in the first place.
@Joshua_N-A4 жыл бұрын
Japanese police do carry guns. They just trained more in martial arts to restrain suspect. Guns are for self defense and it's the last thing an officer do. Japan Self Defense Force is more of a glorified SWAT team since it is stated that by law JSDF is an extension of the police force (JSDF don't have military court, that would be violatiing Article 9). Last time Japan had gun violence was when IJA and IJN had the deadliest interservice rivalry in history. Officers getting shot, assassinations running high inside Imperial Japanese military.

Our caretaker, who lives in our property owned an M1 Garand rifle and an M1 Carbine since he was a member of the CAFGU (civilian armed force geographical unit). The Philippines would be speaking Japanese with us Americans if Americans and Filipinos had not known and believed in the yse of weapons. I have lived in the Philippines as an Amercan and I feel safer in the Philippines more than in the USA with all its hatred. I have seen this documentary before, its a feel-good left leaning documentary that does not go into discussion about firearm ownership or procedures explaining how to get a firearm in the first place. It is a hell of a process to legally own a firearm in Philippines with multiple requirements just to even apply. Why does the common Filipino need a firearm? I never heard that discussion in the video which is lacking on details the viewers might be interested in. SJW/Liberals online would rather interfere on why a nation SHOULDN'T have firearms like these people who live in the first world, ignore them. they do not live in the Philippines and why should their opinion matter on laws or firearm ownership? The same way like in the United States where owning firearms is RIGHT despite what Europeans say about shootings when they have their own problems and social and cultural differences? "but Japan doesn't have any shootings and they have strict gun laws!" Yes, and Homogeneity also worked for japan and they are more culturally understanding of each other despite that, they have problems with arson and violence. are you going to ban vehicles too?

For the USA, they do have a gun violence problem and that's for their society to fix. The most obvious solution would just to make it more difficult for USA civilians to own a gun. In the Philippines, the landscape is different and the debate should also be different... This is where Atom missteps in his approach.
@welcomeUNKNOWN3 жыл бұрын
@Dee B. "The most obvious solution would just to make it more difficult for USA civilians to own a gun. " This isn't a solution, this will never fix gun violence and stop crime because criminals do not follow the law, it will only make it harder for law abiding citizens to arm themselves for protection. the Philippine landscape is different due to the _very same laws_ its restricting its citizens to arm themselves is culturally ingrained in Filipino society and enabled by poverty. I did research on how to get firearms in PH and the steps were very convoluted and cost prohibitive. (as in going to the Municipal/PNP buildings and do a slew of tests for your LTOFP) the average filipino wouldn't dare to do all of that hassle let alone even know they could apply for one)

I consulted on this movie when Peddling Pictures media team were researching the M1911 and gun culture. That's why I was credited as 'B Adventures' and very grateful. Quick history: The Philippine-American War 1899-1902. The US Army were using Colt M1892, 38 Long Colt revolvers. Briefly reverting to the old M1873 single action 45 Colt revolvers. The heavier bullet had more stopping power against charging tribesmen. In 1904 the US military requested a new semi-auto pistol in 45 calibre. The M1911 pistol in 45ACP was designed by an American gunsmith and engineer John Moses Browning. The US military adopted in year 1911, hence the generic model name. The pattern is over 100 years old and still made around the world, especially in Philippines.

Filipinos have a Firearm mentality. They like shooting something especially one that is like or simulate the firing of a firearm. Just ask the kids playing baril-barilan or plying video war games. It is not the actual possession of a firearm that makes Filipinos love guns but their psyche-culture on this lethal devises. While only a few thousands legitimate firearm owners may, have firearms, including those loss firearm owners, male Filipinos really like to have their own firearms. Ask every male or even female Filipinos if they want to own a firearm and I am sure that they will say yes. Iba na yung may armas.

Gun culture goes back to the time of Spaniard or pre-Spaniard era, were it became a status symbol of power for Sultans and Datus of the time, even to the average warrior. And a necessity to have in order to defend their kingdom and communities from Spaniard colonization.

This journalist and that doctor at the hospital doesn’t understand how easy it is for a government to oppress their people when they are systematically disarmed and not allowed to defend themselves while their government is allowed to be as armed as they want against their people. The reason for so much violence is the same reason for all other violent crime in a community: poverty and a lack of action from governments to address it.

There are just to many people unafraid to commit crimes even to the point of killing just to rob, steal and rape. Gun is a necessity to protects one's self and one's family. The country needs to resolve crimes and the causes of crimes, such as lack of job opportunities, before tackling the gun issue. ATOM, you got this issue all wrong.

And consistently all your primary sources confirmed that legal gun owners are not a threat. Why then the turn around at the end for a call for a national dialogue on gun ownership when it was constantly alluded that the majority of gun deaths were linked to social, economic, and political factors, which a dialogue on gun ownership will do little to address?
