Seems like most shooters are young men borrowing their parents rifle - not craftsmen spending hundreds of hours and even more $ on equipment building a weapon from scratch. As someone who's 3D printed a lot, the idea of someone doing this with malicious intent is so ridiculous. The guy brings up a great point in that anyone who wanted their hands on an illegal weapon would just go buy one from the back of someones car lol
@MrTVintroАй бұрын
The issue that the gun community doesn't seem to want to talk about is that "illegal weapons" don't just pop into existence out of nowhere. Y'all would like us to think that every single "illegal weapon" out there was stolen out of a car or during a burglary. That simply isn't the reality. Reality is that the gun industry/community is "leaky" and is willfully blind to it. Between straw purchases, private gun sales, gun shows and "oh no I totally loaned it to my buddy who lost it in a boating accident" hundreds of thousands of guns that started out perfectly legally owned when they rolled off the assembly line end up as "illegal weapons".

Yep, I have printed for years and have a couple of very good printers. I also shoot as a hobby. The idea of even trying this is pointless. Hundreds and hundreds of dollars sunk into something that will last a few rounds and frankly is just not that safe. For less money I can get used weapons through my local FFL shop much easier. whish has always been possible and is very common for criminals. ghost guns aren't a new issue, anyone with a brain can figure out that removing the marking on a gun makes it harder to track if it were used for crime. the difference and the thing that could be a genuine concern is that you can at home, relatively easily make a fully plastic gun, that is undetectable. at the end of the day, if someone wants to illegally acquire a gun, they will be able to, regardless of if it's bought from someone else, or homemade. as a European, I'm all for putting restrictions on firearms, but with the sheer amount of guns circulating in the US, it's pointless to even try, the guns are already out there.
@ledocteur7701 Жыл бұрын
similarly, homemade bombs were always doable. get a pipe, plug off the ends with a small hole for a fuse, put a bunch of powder in it, and here you go, a grenade. the sheer existence of 3D printing doesn't all of a sudden make it possible, it just makes it maybe a little easier in certain cases, but that it.

The part they completely forgot to mention is with $20 or less you can stop by a hardware store and create a shotgun from pipe. You can also buy a file kit and completely remove all serialization from ANY gun. Having a 3d print schematic is not any different than having an electeonic or paper file with drawings on it. @wolfe1978nmАй бұрын
This is one reason I won't use printer companies that force the user to send prints to the cloud, then back down to the printer (Like Bambu did for years). Last year NY tried to force a law that 3D printers had to have a serial number and be registered with the State gov't. If that had passed, all it would have taken was some DA to subpoena the printer company to get a list of everything you have ever printed. Then, in true NY fashion, go retroactive on a bunch of laws and throw you in jail for printing something they consider dangerous.

I have to say that I didn’t expect such an honest take on this subject in a video from VICE. The only thing I thought could have been made clearer was the statistic on numbers of “ghost guns” used by criminals. They count all guns without serial numbers, and many of these are commercially manufactured guns that have had their serial numbers removed. It’s much easier to remove a serial number than to make a gun. Of course I’m sure there are people making guns to sell on the black market, because there’s money to be made.

Ironically that one statistic invalidates the entire video. They want to come off as "Honest" but they knew exactly what they were doing when they said that 24,000 guns recovered were "ghost guns" without specifying any details on how many of those were 3D printed. I'd honestly say it's close if not 0 of those guns were 3D printed. It just takes way too much know how to 3D Print a gun. You practically have to be a top notch gun smith AND competent in the 3D printing software and process. To make it completely untraceable you would need to have the know how to also make your own metal parts at home as well, and the equipment to do so. The amount of time, money, and effort that has to go into this, the syndicate would have to be very dedicated to the process, which that effort could have been put to just getting them the easy way and grinding them off. If they put out guns at any recognizably widespread manner, I mean that would be pretty unique in it's own right considering how infantile of a hobby it is. It wouldnt be long before they were tracked down, someone would rat them out.

Except they didn't keep bias out. The statistics they used that thousands of ghost guns are found in crime scenes is misleading. Thousands of guns with no serial number (scratched off) were found. 3D printed guns with no serial number? Likely in the single digit numbers if that. They add the two different scenarios into one "ghost gun" label to make 3d printed guns seem like a big evil when in reality its just idiots with real guns scratching off the serial number

The whole thing about the 40mm grenade launcher is nonsense. 1st, the grenades themselves are legally class 3 weapons and require an explosives license, 2: their essentially impossible to buy anyway, 3: their actually *really* complex with their arming triggers so they don't blow up when you shoot them. And the drone "bombs"? Seriously folks? You can make the same thing with a empty soda can, you don't need to 3d print a fancy looking mini-nuke like your playing fallout. The hard part isn't something you can 3D print. The hard part is the blasting cap/detonator and the high explosives you need to fill it with. The reason they are getting used on our troops is because they are in a country stuffed full of tank shells, artillery shells, aircraft bombs, etc. All stuff they can take apart or use as IEDs. I can definitely say I've never been to a gun show where I saw any loaded arty shells or grenades to purchase. so I think we are "safe".

24:12 Important note: Because the legal definition of a ghost gun is a firearm without a manufacturer's serial number, these 24,000 guns include those with serial numbers filed/etched/otherwise removed. I have something that is in direct correlation with this so my late grandfather who passed away long before I was ever born had a scrap yard and people who committed crimes with guns would dispose of them in his scrap yard.
