Has there been a video that addresses the question of why the sacraments do not generate a perceptive and lasting change? It seems like intellectual assent to say there has been a change as with baptism or receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit via confirmation but our behavior, concupiscence as it were, remains. Have a friend who completed RCIA and is a bit downtrodden on how the fruits of the sacraments seemed to have changed nothing.

I can say that I have not had difficulty accepting the truths of the Catholic faith--there seems to be an internal assent to them, and I attribute this to my baptism as an infant. I wasn't confirmed until I was 32 and, almost immediately upon receiving the sacrament--within days--I had a strong desire to defend the faith. Those are my experiences. Beyond this, I do find that, the more I love God, the more I want to know him and vice versa. As a result, I've gained a much greater control over any number of areas of sin, but it's a process fueled by sacramental grace and not an immediate effect. I hope this helps.

I’m for sacrament, but the problem then comes, what kind of sacrament? Apparently God is very specific on how to worship him, I think it’s critical to discern and avoid adding human traditions. (though I believe it is impossible to achieve 100%)

They have to be the ones taught by the Apostles. I wouldn't say God is specific, but He is certainly severe to disorganized, free-spirit worship. Deviations from what we've been taught are dangerous, just ask Aaron's sons. We have to be reverent in prayer, scripture and worship alike, lest we die.

When taken in the context of Scripture as a whole, there is no foundation for the belief that God ever intended these passages to be taken as support for rituals as a means of conveying grace. In other words, the whole idea of "sacraments" that convey saving grace upon people is unbiblical. Two of the main sacraments specifically are said by the Roman Catholic Church to be necessary in order to gain eternal life: baptism and communion. Because of the Roman Catholic Church belief that baptism is required for salvation, Catholics maintain that it is important to baptize infants. But nowhere in Scripture can you find even a single example or command to do so. Some Roman Catholics use Acts 16:33 as a possible example, because it states that the Philippian jailor "and his family" were baptized. But, taking this verse in context, we note two things: (1) When the jailor asked Paul what he must do to be saved, Paul did NOT say, "Believe on Jesus and be baptized and take communion." Rather, Paul said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household" (v. 31). Thus, we see that it is faith that is the ingredient necessary for salvation. It was understood that one who believed would be baptized, but baptism was not necessary for salvation. If it were, Paul would have given it more weight in his missionary journeys (1 Corinthians 1:14-18). (2) We see that the "family" could not have included infants or toddlers, as it states in verse 34 that the jailor had "believed in God with all his household." Infants and toddlers cannot exercise faith in God in such a fashion. Again and again throughout Scripture, faith, not faith PLUS baptism, is seen as the means through which one receives salvation (John 1:12; 3:14-16; Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 3:19-26; 4; 10:9-13; etc.). Turning to communion, the Roman Catholic Church makes it clear that they take John 6:54 literally when Jesus says, "Unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you." The problem is that their belief that Jesus is speaking literally here is not in keeping with the context of the passage in which Jesus repeatedly states the importance of faith in Him and His coming atoning death for their sins (see John 6:29,35,40,47 and consider the whole message of the gospel of John, as stated in John 20:31). When one examines the remaining sacraments, one finds that the belief that they convey "sanctifying grace" is not in keeping with the context of the rest of the Bible. Yes, all Christians should be baptized, but baptism does not infuse us with grace. Yes, all Christians should partake of the Lord’s Supper, but doing so does not confer sanctifying grace. Yes, we should confess our sins, not to a priest, but rather to God (1 John 1:9). Having a formal training program and formal acceptance into the church is a good thing to do, but it does not convey saving grace. Being approved as a church leader is an honorable thing, but it does not result in grace. Marriage is a wonderful and blessed event in the life of a couple, but it is not the means of how God graces us. Praying for and with a person who is dying is a godly thing to do - but it does not add grace to our account. All the grace we will ever need is received the moment we trust Jesus, by faith, as Savior (Ephesians 2:8-9). The saving grace that is granted at the moment of genuine faith is the only saving grace God’s Word calls on us to receive. This grace is received by faith, not by observing rituals. So, while the seven sacraments are “good things to do,” when they are understood in a biblical context, the concept of the seven sacraments as “conferring sanctifying grace” is completely unbiblical.

Hi there! It is important to understand what faith means. Once this is in place, it's easy to see how it does not exclude sacraments. Faith means trust. What does it mean to trust in Jesus? It means to rely on Him and believe everything He tells us. If He tells us to take an action, it would be unfaithful to not act. So faith doesn't exclude action, but rather we act out of faith. For example, in Hebrews 11:7 we read: "By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith." Now what would happen if Noah simply had intellectual faith in God but did not act? It would be an instance of a lack of faith if he were to not build the Ark. Trust without the assent of the full person's being is not trust. Even the demons believe, but they do not do what is righteous. To trust Jesus is to do what He says. He tells us to ve baptized: "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned" (Mark 16:16). He tells us to go out and baptize all (the great commission). Peter agrees: "Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Pet. 3:21). The whole Church up until the reformation believed in baptismal regeneration. All of the Church Fathers believed it. This is the same with the Eucharist. Lastly, it is true you won't find everything in the Bible that the Catholic Church believes because the Bible is part the Sacred Tradition of the Church, but not the whole tradition. There are things that were not written down that are also included. "So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter" (2 Thess. 2:15). May God bless us!

@@Lux_Aeterna The words of Paul says that scripture is written plainly and without hidden meaning for the believer. In the same chapter stroke he also echoed Isaiah and warned that scripture would NOT be understood easily if at all by unbelievers. As a professed believer in Christ i CAN understand scripture, I can desern the word of God in scripture for what he wants for me in my life and i never need help in doing so. My PERSONAL relationship with Christ is my own. Im not better than this guy or you or anyone. I can simply understand the word of God and his disciples' meanings. Its a trait given to the believer who believes upon the lord Jesus Christ as their sufficient imputed righteousness for sin. I mean no disrespect to the man in the video or you. None. Im just telling you what scripture says about those who can understand scripture in general. Sacraments are not wicked or wrong. Some of them have great weighted value in helping a believer for sure. A believers walk for instance. Defiantly. They are not mentioned as sacraments in teh bible but obviously thats not a huge deal if its derived of course. The only sacraments that are disconnected from scripture are things liek Baptism. The catholic tradition of baptism isnt the scriptural definition. For instance Catholics hold that water baptism is essential and necessary for salvation. Its part of it but scripturally its not necessary. Mark 16:15-16 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. [16] He who has believed [in Me] and has been baptized will be saved [from the penalty of God’s wrath and judgment]; but he who has not believed will be condemned. " but he who has not believed will be condemned." notice the district call out by Jesus. Condemnation is not caused by a lack of water baptism. "Belief" is the ONLY requirement. i can site MANY examples like this in other areas. Faith works Eucharist mass salvation (though Catholics do hold true to some primary essentials to justification that i agree with) But keep in mind i AGREE with the biblical definition and my agreement with Catholicism is secondary to the primary which is the word of God. It doesnt mean the whole catholic system is completely wrong but much of its tradition usurps scripture and creates dogma from history rather than scripture. If scripture is the word of God and scripture is the sole source of the word of God, im gonna follow the word of God not church tradition that was created OUTSIDE the confines of the word of God. 2 Thessalonians 2:15 - So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter. "Traditions that you were taught" past tense meaning beliefs already in circulation not validation to create more. :by our spoken word or by our letter" Letter and spoken word are one and the same and the letters of Paul and the 12 were already in circulation well before 100ad. The Good news was set in stone and unchangeable and even exemplified by Pual in Galatians 1:8-9 Galatians 1:8-9 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we [originally] preached to you, let him be condemned to destruction! [9] As we have said before, so I now say again, if anyone is preaching to you a gospel different from that which you received [from us], let him be condemned to destruction! "preach to you a gospel" - Preach is a similar method of tradition by mouth often likened to ORAL tradition. The Gospels can't be changed, modified, altered or added to. Tradition and written word was set in stone and solidified.

@@Lux_Aeterna also notice Jewish tradition with the torah even today. The torah is mandatory memory reading. Its been that way since Moses. scripture tradition has ALWAYS been an inclusive open dialogue of scripture and keep scripture written on ones heart. this only changed due to persecution in the early NT church. But after Rome and Constantine, liturgy continued without allowing people to read from the source. This would be the early churches BIGGEST mistake i think. Transparency of scripture could have avoided the reformation. But the church concealed and lied and introduced nonsense dogma like Indulgences and praying for the dead. A practice absent in all of the law of Moses.

@@Lux_Aeterna ah the old protestants have 50 billion different ideas stance lol. Catholics are unified under Rome because they were smart enough to create a series of unscriptural anathemas in history that keep the congregants in line . A system never challenged by anyone until Luther. The bible clearly teaches to measure ALL teaching of scripture against scripture. this is commanded to the readers and believers, not just clergy. The many denominations are UNIFED on justification, sanctification glorification and the Trinity and all without threat of a pretend church acting like it has power to cast you into hell. there are only 2 outliers that deny the trinity. Mormons and Pentecostals. Everyone else is Christ alone, scripture alone Faith alone. Even the wacky prosperity preachers still preach the core. Some don't preach sin as heavily as they should but as long as the core is there its up to the goer to have the relationship with Christ. Not the church. No church can save you, no church can condemn you. they can only cast you our for unrepentant sin. We do this in protestant churches all the time according to instruction of scripture. Protestant denominations agree on the core creed of scripture. the divide is in worship style, preaching style, service style. Much like Roman Catholics and eastern which are VASTLY different in structure with core tenants. The church was NEVER meant to evolve into big building conglomerates. Jesus in John 4 says we were supposed to worship in truth and spirit outside mountains and temples (churches). Meaning he didn't reside in those places but in spirit everywhere. The church in Greek according to Jesus is EVERYONE who believes in Christ as savior for salvation According to the Gospels. not a building. We are to be led by DEACONS and BISHOPS. Not pastors or Priests. The catholic priesthood is a perverse system outside 1 Timothy 3. It ignores the necessity to allow marriage and that those leaders marriages be models of the church as Christ commands. The only thing i care about is if you have a ongoing daily relationship with Christ. Belief is one thing but do you carry on a personal relationship where at judgment God can say he "KNEW YOU" vs not? Thats all i care about. not the Roman nuances of church validity using the street cred name of Jesus for its self value.

@@Lux_Aeterna you don't know your history. I'm a HUGE fan of the church before 700ad. After 700 it was meddled with too much by empires. Transubstantiation and Purgatory(limbo was the original idea) didn't exist until 1215, saint veneration 990 and the Marian dogmas are only recently becoming a "thing" and those dogmas are extrabiblical on their own all together. The church today is "better" than it was in 1500 and Trent fixed ALOT of those issues but Protestantism is a rebellion of the churches radical changes from what it was in 700 vs what it started to become. Luther wasn't far off from what Catholics are today. He just didn't love God but rather felt God was an oppressive ruler in THAT system. Reading scripter and realizing Faith alone and how works chive with everything made a HUGE difference. The early church didn't believe in baptismal regeneration but that you must BELIEVE first then be baptized as I've stated. Again this is all over scripture and even hinted at in the Torah. Scripture supports this and even Pual him self makes important statements that belief is central and Baptism is not. Baptism was MADE central by Constantine and his mandated baptisms of the Roman empire regardless of belief. The catholic church holds a lot of tradition that is clearly made up by unregenerate historical figures. I know plenty of Catholic today that do NOT belief a water ritual saves but is rather a representation of a persons decision to follow Christ in belief. I don't hold myself as a protestant. I'm a scripture only, believer in Christ only type Christian that holds to Christ alone, his word alone outside Rome. As i said i know plenty of legit believers in Christ who are Catholics. My wife is one of them. If you are not reading scripture and connecting with God through Gods word then you have no relationship with Christ. your faith is in your faith and not Jesus. And its up to you to choose your path and destiny. Not everyone is called to be in a relationship with God through Christ. some are just bound for hell in thinking the act is through the church instead. that's their choice. a sad reality but its still free will. We only get Gods word from scripture. There is no other source. The church cannot make up more dogma. Scripture prohibits this.
