This is a misconception. Malaysian flag originated from Sang Saka flag, way back from the time of ancient Kingdom of Srivijaya. Subsequently, the stripes was adopted by the later Southeast Asian Kingdoms such as Majapahit. In fact, it's possible that the East India Company flag was based on this Srivijaya design, probably as a symbol that the company operated mainly in this region. This flag was then carried over to West Indies.

Malaysia is not inspired by east India British company and Malaysia flag is create because of a Johorean that took the state of Johor flag as an inspiration put white stripes, yellow moon and star but some version said the flag origin is from the Majapahit Empire flag that is only white and red stripes until the British copied it and put the union jack flag at the corner and fun fact: Majapahit ruled over the Nusantara in the past and Malaysia is part of the Nusantara.
